I was just thinking about this dude. How sick would it be for there to have been a mini boss in the Dreg Heap and it's pretty tough, but if you befriend the giant, even this far flung into the future, you suddenly have arrows raining down for fire support?

You know I don't normally make requests but the Giants from Dark Souls 2 always fascinated me. I hope another maybe smaller Giant video comes out explaining their place in the series because before that game, giants were mostly faceless slaves with what seems to be a low level of intelligence, or speech capability. I dunno why but ever since I played that one level where you enter into the dream of those tree giants I just wanted to play as them. Their weapons are the size of roughly 4 human sized character on average.

Something i just picked up from this video that i guess i never thought of was how the theme of darksouls 3 is legacy, I believe it had so many callbacks to the souls series and especially ds1 and considering it was the last dark souls game with Miyazaki even saying as much. Everything about this game lore wise and gameplay wise encapsulates the legacy of dark souls. I know that a lot of people hopped on the dark souls wagon after elden ring's explosion in popularity I really hope people are able to find these kinds of aspects of the game and show them the same appreciation us dark souls veterans do! Great video and I myself never actually found out the picking up all the white branches and returning thing. It still blows my mind the sheer level of detail and care that was put into these games. The giants in cathedral of the deep are there to stomp corpses into sludge like grapes, back when Aldrich was being fed more people to make him more powerful. After the coup of Irithyll, the war between the deep faith and Sulyvahn & his knights (Sulyvahn as pontiff of the way of white wouldn’t want some sludge monster eating the all father now, would he), the giants in the cathedral remain, hollowed, just there

Fascinating video! I never knew of the connection between the white branches and Dusk. I remember finding Elizabeth in the swamp, and realising it was Oolacile. So then the Curse-Rotten Greatwood is a distant descendent of the tree folk from Darkroot (and the gardener tree folk from the DLC). I wonder how Undead Settlement maps on to DS1 though? Is it still Ooolacile/Darkroot, or would it be built on the ruins of Undead Burg?

I think the current enslavement of the Giants has a very complicated story: As you said, the Giant Sentinels within Anor Londo were likely based on actual Giants. In fact, most of Anor Londo's " illusions" are merely an image of it's past; more Batwing escorts, more guards, more everything. But the important thing to note here is that these Sentinels, by the time of 1, have left. More importantly, by the time of 3, Sen's Fortress is also gone, with it's Giants. Where did they all go? In DS2, we hear of this " Giant kingdom " across the sea. From their land, Nashandra came to Vendrick, and " warned" him about them. The rest is obviously history, but the implication is obvious: The Giants did not stay in bondage. After the Chosen Undead linked the Fire, and the revelation of Gwyndolin illusion( now unnecessary), the Giants freed themselves and set up their own kingdom within Lordran. They came to Drangleic to avenge the theft of their brethren's souls, as well as their current state. As seen within the Giant Memories, the Giants primarily used pyromancies and, in the case of the Giant Lord, hexes( Repel). This can help us pinpoint the kingdom in DS3; Carthus. As I said before, I believe Wolnir to be a Giant. His focus on both pyromancies and the study of the Dark indicate his predecessor, the Giant Lord, was not the last to explore both venues. In fact, we can give an estimate of the specific territories involved; The Undead Settlement's denizens wear " ritual garb" for the burial of Undead, it's meaning forgotten. That same garb, in the form of the Worker Hat, is worn by specific skeletons within the Catacombs Of Carthus. At the same time, the Catacombs are situated underneath Farron; the architecture of the few buildings within the Swamp is close to that of the Catacombs in style. In other words, Carthus most likely covered most of the known map besides Irithyll, including Farron. This is not surprising; the forest of Farron is recent, born from dried wolf's blood, and the climate in the Settlement is dry and hot. Other possible locations would be the unexplored region around Archdragon Peak; the peak itself seems to be of a desert climate. This, along with the territories conquered by Wolnir after he rendered the Crowns to dust, shows him to have had an absolutely staggering empire that covered most of the known world. Their core location around the Settlement and Farron is not surprising; Gough did say " our land of Oolacile ". Other Giants would've taken that sentiment to more literal lengths. Have you ever wondered when exactly the Abyss Watchers were created? As in, what was their call to action? Why was their keep built atop this place? " Lord Wolnir of Carthus sentenced countless souls to gruesome deaths, keen to outlive them all." The Catacombs weren't built with Giants in mind; they werent built to simply bury the dead of their kingdom. They were built by Wolnir, to house his countless victims and their souls. The jars within the Catacombs release humanities when broken; they are sealed containers of Dark, likely made originally with experimentation in mind. This,along with the Catacombs' location near Smouldering Lake, and the hostility between it's denizens and the Ghrus, indicates Wolnir's search to expand his horizons on the matters of both pyromancies and hexes, no matter the cost to his own subjects. Indeed, if there was ever a cause for a " caravan of Undead" to call for the banishing of the Dark wherever it came from, it would be none other than Wolnir himself. Wolnir, by his cruelty and ambition, doomed his fellow Giants and descendants to further misery and scorn.

@@TheHonoredMadman Thanks! That's very kind of you. I'll be waiting for that video. Sounds interesting. And yeah,part of the reason the theory is so detailed is really just my obsession with Carthus and Wolnir. That, and theories about Lordran's history in general. I think there's a whole lot of things that happened between 2 and 3 that we have almost no context for. The Crowns. Wolnir. Carthus. The founding of Farron. The emergence of Londor and Lothric. People keep saying 2 is gone in 3, but it's really all over the place. It's just not explicitly referenced as much.

@@TheHonoredMadman Hello. This is a short tangent I found myself on, but it does feel important: Where did the Giant Sentinels go? As far as we have speculated, the enslaved Giants of Lordran in Sen's Fortress and the like freed themselves,and founded the "Giant Kingdom", but the Sentinels left long, long before that, as did Gwynevere and most of the gods. By the time of 1, they're already gone, so,where are they? "Armor of the giant sentinels of Anor Londo.Made from ancient brass, it also offers protection versus non-physical attacks." Compare them to this: "How old could this nearly-crumbling armor be? Has extremely low durability. Sometimes, just as a thing falls to pieces, it unleashes its last flash of great power..." Most people have this strange notion that the Old Knights of Heide are golems of some sort; this is unlikely to be true, for a simple reason: "Wielded by a warrior from a time so ancient that there exists no record of his endeavors." There is, or was, a warrior within that armour, wielding that greatsword or greathammer. Whether they are still in there is unknown; the important thing is, this was once an actual person. Amd given the size and age of said armour, that person would have to be a Giant. This explains a few things; for some reason, there is at least one Giant skull within the Grave Of Saints. The Old Knights are resistant to but not immune to bleed damage. Most importantly, both their age and the state of the armour can be explained by them wearing brass instead of the specific alloy used with the Heide Knights' chain mail. In other words, the Old Knights were the next incarnation of the Giant Sentinels, just as the Giant Kingdom was built by the formerly enslaved Giants of Anor Londo and Sen's Fortress. The two, thanks to their separation early on, have diverged completely.... Or have they? _ I had a strange question enter my mind: Why is the Giant's Kinship necessary to enter the Throne Of Want? It's quite odd, when you think about it. The beings that form the bridge to the Throne are not Giants; they're golems, specifically of the kind seen in Eleum Loyce. No head; hole in the chest. Both they and the Throne itself are far, far older than Vendrick, if not most of his predecessors. In fact, in Aldia's words, " none of them stood" where we did; never was anyone in the known history of this continent so close to the Throne. "Whether Heide refers to a kingdom or was just a name for the land is not clear, for no records date back far enough to tell." "The Defender has stood by the throne for ages. Will his wait be worth the while?" This explains one half; the age, as well as the golems. Eleum Loyce is one out of two places that resemble Anor Londo within Drangleic; the presence of the golems there is not so strange; they were likely originally produced in Heide. So,why is the Giant's Kinship required? And why does the Giant Lord have it? Well, the Giant's Kinship's original name sheds some light on it; " Giant's Resonance." The item description isn't helpful in describing it's origins, but the name is quite enough. The Giant's Resonance is exactly what it says in a tin; it is a a resonance among all Giants. A connection that binds them all. Indeed, a " singular rage" burned within the Giants' hearts at Vendrick and his kingdom. They marched as one to burn his kingdom; unable to separate theor own feelings from those of his most direct and specific victims, they could find it in themselves to forgive these transgressions, or even consider the alternative of peace. At the moment we find it, the Resonance is bound to one Giant Lord, come from across the sea to fulfill his duty.... But who held it before? In much the same way Eleum Loyce resembles Heide and Anor Londo, there is one place that resembles the Throne; The bottom of Brume Tower. Dozens of Old Knights litter the place, covered in ash, but above all of them, there is one. What you see the Fume Knight's arena is composed merely of his chest piece and helmet; whoever wore this armour was, truly, a Giant among Giants. Whatever happened here, we do not know,though it left one reluc; a certain scorching hot scepter, held by a foolish human king..... One that oddly looks like a coiled sword. _ The Throne, it appears, was carved at least twice. When first made, it was a massive seat. Within that seat, is an even smaller notch, carved to fit a much tinier subject; A human. In some way, shape or form, the Giants in general, and the Old Knights specifically, were the wards of the Linking of the Fire within Drangleic. With the fall of Heide, however, and their inevitable passing, their Resonance was inherited by another; A vengeful king, from across the sea. Come to conquer Drangleic, and reclaim the birthright of his race. Was Nashandra truthful when she told Vendrick to fear the Giants? In fact, was the Giant Lord " warned" in the very same manner? After all, there is only one true Throne... And we have no need for two rulers.

Ever consider that Xanthos King Jeremiah might have been the king of Oolacile? If not that, then the connection might be due to the colour, with Xanthos being a golden yellow and the head wrapping being that of a mushroom. Oolacile is known as the land of golden sorceries and mushroom folk.

Lovely story, however it appears you're unaware that giants came from the stone archtrees, so one could interpret that the giant archer is defending his baby kin. Regarding the locations of the white trees, it's probably due to Allfather Lloyd seeing as he is a grey giant and was the arch bishop of the Way of White. Undead Settlement is a Way of White area, Deacons of the Deep was a Way of White cathedral, and Farron's Keep is surrounding by trees, which we know are giant kin. There's also the gold coin next to Oolacile in the DLC, which is an Allfather Lloyd coin. ChannelYoshimitsu covers the Japanese text of Dark Souls and explains why Allfather Lloyd is a grey giant, even the name Lloyd means grey in welsh.

@@TheHonoredMadman It's also worth noting that it isn't just the giants, humans do it to as you see their bodies turning into trees in the Undead Settlement, and you see them around the High Wall of Lothric. Could be a transitional/metamorphosis phase into those insectoid butterflies. Also don't forget the Rotted Greatwood is basically a bloated giant. I think that boss gets overlooked a lot when talking about giants.
@core-nix1885
@core-nix1885 8 месяцев назад
@@TheHonoredMadmanI don't think they came from archtrees per se, though they do have strong ties. Archtrees are closely related to Titanite (see: The Great Hollow). Titanite is a real world mineral, formerly and informally known as sphene which is the Greek word for *wedge.* (Giants are also somewhat analogous to Greek Titans, having been overthrown by smaller gods.) *Essentially, Titanite is Archstone.* (N.B. Pharros' Lockstones are also a reference to keystones; the stone wedges that support architectural arches) Arches, in-game, are a metaphor for the harmony of erection and erosion, which is an idea adapted from Yukio Mishima's "Sun and Steel".
