This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Kumu Hina, an educator, social and political activist, and Hawaiian cultural practitioner, shares her experience as a transgendered woman exploring her half Hawaiian, half Chinese ancestry. In her talk, she shares about a recent trip to China which unexpectedly connected her to her family there, and the realizations this new connection is bringing to her about the origins of identity.
Kanaka maoli teacher, cultural practitioner, community leader, one of first openly-transgender candidates to run for a statewide political office in the U.S.
Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu is a kanaka maoli teacher, cultural practitioner and community leader. She was born in the Nuuanu district of Oʻahu and educated at Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawaiʻi. She was a founding member of, and outreach specialist for, Kulia Na Mamo, a community organization established to improve the quality of life for māhūwahine (transgender women). She is currently the cultural director at Hālau Lōkahi, a public charter school that uses Native Hawaiian culture, history and education as tools for developing and empowering the next generation of warrior scholars. She and her students have been invited to participate in numerous events in Hawaiʻi and abroad, including trips to Tahiti, Autearoa and Japan. Hina is also a leader in many community affairs and civic activities, including serving as chair of the O‘ahu Island Burial Council, which oversees the management of Native Hawaiian burial sites and ancestral remains. Last year, Hina became one of the first Native Hawaiians to actively support marriage equality in Hawaiʻi through a prominent Star-Advertiser editorial entitled, “Hawaiian Values Differ from Western Traditions.” She can currently be seen in an award-winning documentary about her life, Kumu Hina, which is screening at film festivals around the globe.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I had the pleasure of knowing Hina when we were keiki. Just a 7th and 6th grader going to Kamehameha Schools. Even then such a beautiful soul. Now I dance with Linda Pahoa in Texas. Every time I watch this and hear her 'Oli I reconnect to the land of my ancestors. My beloved Hawaii. Thank you for sharing your powerful story with the world. 7 years later it is still relevant and engrossing. Aloha 'oe.

Mahu have a higher status within the culture. Especially in Tahiti where the eldest son is always raised to embody the essence of the male and the female spirit and energy. Mahu is not a derogatory word and has no derogatory connotations within Polynesia. All we can hope to do in this life is be a good person and contribute something good to the world.

+kpadmirer Mahu really were "in the middle" of Hawaiian society, able to pass among social & political divisions due to the respect & honor they commanded, and the knowledge & traditions they nurtured. They were highly esteemed and loved!

You have to understand something about 'Oli in order to make that judgment. Unless you have actually heard other dances with kahea and chants I don't think you're qualified to throw shade. Her 'Oli was done clearly and powerfully as it was meant to be.
