Elvis Luciano was a Rule 5 Draft victim. Or, maybe Elvis Luciano was the luckiest ballplayer on the planet. Either way, he was just age 19 when he made his Elvis Luciano MLB Debut for the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays had selected him the Rule 5 Draft the previous December because of a contract loophole.
That loophole meant Elvis Luciano would reach MLB very young. In fact, becoming the youngest MLB player in 25 years. Was he prepared? No. But the Blue Jays knew that. They just wanted his services long term. He wasn’t the first player this happened to. It happened to Wei Chung Wang with the Brewers, as well as Allen Cordoba and Luis Torrens with the Padres.
Since that 2019 season, Luciano’s career has stalled. He’s now training with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s NPB. He hasn’t been able to join the Rule 5 draft success story ranks with players like Roberto Clemente, Johan Santana, and Anthony Santander. I hope you’ll enjoy this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production.

Microwave pro-tip I learned when I turned pro at the age of 19 in the Microwave League: Press the +30 seconds button 4x instead of mashing 2-0-0-start. This requires far less precision and is much easier on your UCL in the long-run. Happy microwaving!
@FoolishBaseball
@FoolishBaseball Месяц назад
Interesting theory. 2-0-0 only requires three button presses though. Probably a negligible difference once you factor in having to move the finger from 2 to 0.
@RoyDonk93
@RoyDonk93 Месяц назад
Don’t forget about the 4th press for “start”! This is commonly overlooked, even in our statistics-driven era (If your microwave requires you to press start to use the +30 sec button, then (1) I’m sorry and (2) while technically more presses it’s still probably a wash to your point about having to move your finger)
@jonathanzuckerberg8850
@jonathanzuckerberg8850 Месяц назад
@@FoolishBaseballdepending on the initial position of the hand and button pressing ability of different fingers you wouldn't need to even move any fingers to press 2-0-0
@Compucles
@Compucles Месяц назад
On my microwave, the 1-5 buttons are shortcuts to start cooking at 100% for 1 minute to 5 minutes respectively with just a single button press. (If you need to bypass those shortcuts, you need to press the "Cook Time" button first.) Meanwhile, the number 9 button is still very rarely used.
@Demoralized88
@Demoralized88 27 дней назад
Other Microwave tips: 1. Above-stove and other 'installed' Microwaves seem to have a capped power limit lower than counter-top or other portable Microwaves, which in my experience can make higher wattage Microwaves much faster and 2. Power percentage only changes the duty cycle (ratio of on/off) and not the power output, making it practically useless for better results and more even cooking. 3. Advertised power includes fan/lights and losses, it's only the input power while the cooking output is 1kW for my Samsung that appears to be the same as in this video. It's better than my old Microwave but (significantly) slower than a Smart countertop model we had in the mid 2000s amongst others.

Fun fact about Johan Santana that nobody talks about: He was briefly with the Marlins. As always, a fire Baseball Bits episode. I'm of the opinion that it was both a blessing and a curse. That one year of Major League pay might have been the financial stability needed to bridge the gap to the developmental deal with the Giants, which could be Elvis's big chance to show that he is Major League ready just about on schedule for a decent length career. He's only 24 this year, and plenty of pitchers don't make it to the show until they turn 25 or 26. This story isn't over, and I look forward to the follow up in around 5 years when he's won a Cy Young Award.

Noah Song caught a bit of a raw deal last year. Taken from Boston by Philly after missing multiple years due to mandatory military service. Spent most or all of the year on the IL, for what may have been a phantom injury, only to eventually be returned to the Sox. In the end it just felt like the Phillies wasted a year of potential development for a guy who at 26 years old doesn’t have time to waste. Pretty sad honestly. Makes you think that certain exceptions should be made sometimes

Phillies fan here. I was excited for Song and thought it could be a sneaky move. By all accounts, from what I have seen (and i follow the team closely) is that they werent trying to waste anything and actually thought he could help. The injury was not phantom, and when he came back he was only throwing 91-93. They had no choice but to offer him back. I hope he eventually makes it, but those injuries may have done a number on his arm already.

He got to stare down batters weekly. Archie "Moonlight" Graham was stuck playing the outfield for one inning and only got to see a big league pitcher as "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's teammate in Iowa that one time. The Rule 5 draft makes big league dreams come true, kid. You don't have to play near some cornfield in Iowa anymore.

His stolen base success rate hasn't been that great. Needs to stop gambling on the basepaths.

I saw the title and the jays hat and was expecting a Roberto Osuna video (154 saves saves before the age of 25, MOST IN MLB HISTORY BY A MILE. 1 after)

The story of Roberto Clemente is a little more complicated than that. In his Rule 5 year he clearly wasn't ready for the majors, and his OPS+ through his age 24 season was 89, very poor for an outfielder. He really became very good at baseball at age 25

That seems like telling a high-schooler they don't get to go to college and they have to start working in a field where you should at least have a bachelor's, then if they fail blaming them for it

Good video, I really appreciate the breakdown - one thing that might have improved this video is a text of the rules that you highlight. Otherwise, good job!

@@FoolishBaseball im thinking at least 4 puts you in the conversation, 6 makes you a lock. You could do a 4 part series on the chess prodigy Joey Votto and you're a lock.
