Assassins creed: Valhalla, is a great one, there are games for anything you can think of, I’m sure video games are superior in story/plot/creativeness, I think your dad would like call of duty, the campaigns about wars, video games are ok for kids if not abused, but I learned more about our was history form games than from school, all I say is he might enjoy knowing how well the game explains it

Thorkell practically has his own field of biomechanics, dedicated to calculating if his numerous, legendary feats of strength are humanly possible. He's one of those figures who walks the line between history and myth, where you really have to wonder how much his legend grew with the telling, and how much he was just that much of a real life anime character. One thing we can say for certain is that even among viking warriors, he left an impression. Ed: Then again, Thorfinn Karlsefni Thórdarson himself is a figure of conflicting history and legend, since the Vinnland Sagas are themselves often contradictory and embellished, so it makes sense that most of his supporting cast would be in a similar space.

That thing you said about the history is 100% true. I don't really wanna spoil much but the anime does do a pretty good job at staying faithful to real world accounts. one of the examples of this that doesn't spoil anything is the old sailor that Thors and Thorfinn set out with; It's Leif Erikson. Leif's father, Erik the Red, settled Greenland; and while Leif is a Norseman in origin he was raised in Greenland. Leif eventually became the chief of the Norse colony of Greenland (Eiríksfjǫrðr) following his fathers death. The idea that Leif was the first to discover North America is fairly supported by historians. Most seem to think that he landed in the portion of Canada that eventually became Newfoundland, as supported by the remnants of a Norse settlement there (L'Anse aux Meadows, or Meadows Cove). The only real accounts other than Meadows Cove are a few pieces of Norse literature. Funny enough, It is also believed that Leif's Great Great Great Great Uncle (a mouthful I know) was the settler of Iceland; so Colonizing is very much in his bloodline. Lots of cool little things like this throughout the series, At least a couple of the characters are very much real and significant historical figures of continental Europe and the British Isles.

That’s so cool! Are u a historian or anything? I know a little about Norse mythology, but I wish I knew more about that part of history going into the show. I think I cut it out of the vid, but I talked about how much I love the Percy Jackson books. That story weaves the different myths you hear into a new story, and that’s a huge part of why I love it so much. If I had that knowledge here, it definitely would’ve brought Vinland to another level. Me and my dad are still pretty confused on the jabba guy. Do u know anything more about that? Was the writer just a big Star Wars fan or is there more to that?

@@GoldFamilyReactions I'm no historian haha, just a 21 year old guy with a hobby level interest in history. I totally see what you mean with the Percy Jackson series though, I was also quite interested in it as a kid and I think that ultimately contributed to my interest in mythology and eventually history. I think the evolution of mythology into historically inspired pop culture is quite cool, and really if you think about it it is almost exactly like mythology. they are stories, tales, and parables that in some way speak to the state of mankind and what humans are dealing with when they are writing them. Both modern media and myths are essentially just artistic expressions, just from a different time. Goes into what you were saying about modern writers weaving myths into new stories. I Didn't know anything about the Jabba guy but I did look into him a little bit after your video and he is actually a bit interesting. Seeing him now feels a bit weird or out of place, but a quick google search revealed that vinland saga was published in 2005. Considering that the prequel trilogy of starwars saw releases in '99, 02', and 05' it makes a bit more sense, as they were likely more culturally significant back then.

@@GoldFamilyReactions Also if you want to learn a bit about the history that inspires Vinland Saga; I would look into King Sweyn Forkbeard, Cnut the Great, and Harald II of Denmark. Definitely wait until after you've finished the anime first though, as the plot follows the real world course of events pretty faithfully

@@GoldFamilyReactions can I just say I like watching you guys react. But remember when you were spoiled for Thord (Thorfinn’s dad)? Yh I was also spoiled on the thumbnail you used. Just wanted to let you know. Maybe you assumed we all watched it. And yes for most of the anime you guys watch I did (mha, Naruto, jjk etc). But even the didn’t help. It’s different from knowing what happens and being spoiled yet not knowing. Being spoiled just takes out the fun.

Ok so, they do translate the Japanese descriptions in the sub, but thorfinn was 6 when his father died. Here he's around 14-15 (as we don't know when his birthday is). By the end of this season, he'll be 16-17 (again unknown because it's never said when exactly his birthday is)

15:37 London predates the written history of the Isles. A lot of her city code contains verbiage like "in accordance with the traditions passed down since time immemorial." Empires rise and fall, but the City is eternal.

1:00 The Franks are like the French from before they were the French. Charlemagne and the Twelve Paladins, etc. The Frankish, Norman, Germanic, Welsh and Saxon cultures didn't really delineate their national heritages the same way we do, which leads to a lot of semantic confusion.

So if you're watching on Netflix & you turn on subtitles, they'll actually translate all those locations. I'm not sure where else. I believe prime does it as well! Try having subtitles and see if it works! Loving the reactions man. I tried to get my dad into it but he'd just be on his phone 🤣 I'm glad your dad is digging it. Can't wait for the rest 🙏🙏🙏🙏
