Steven van de Velde groomed a 10 year old girl for 2 years after meeting her on facebook in 2012. He then flew to her home in England and while her parents weren’t home he raped her SEVERAL TIMES. She was 12 years old when these crimes took place. The victim started self-harming as result of this. He was arrested for his crimes and served only 1 year in prison (which is disgustingly lenient for such a horrific crime.) Many, MANY people in the Netherlands are also disgusted by the Dutch olympic committee’s decision to let him compete, there are many petitions calling for his removal and I hope they get listened to.

If this crime was done in america, he would be in prison for life. I guess that is what happens when you have a corrupt justice system. I don't think 1 year suffices for that kind of crime.
Welcome to modern day Europe. The rights of criminals are respected more than the safety and privacy of their victims. Punishment doesn't exist, instead you're just "rehabilitated" and "reintegrated" into the society. "Hate speech" can literally land you a more severe sentence than a grape.

I think the second option(from the first comment under this comment) is better because our Olympic delegation is not controlled bye one single organization, the volleyball part is just a small part of the organization and that part chooses there own people to represent the Netherlands. I've seen stories where people get false imprisonment for longer than 10 years, even death sentences before, and yet this guy for his crimes that made the victim do sh and the fact that the victim will probably remember that moment for the rest of her life, while only serving 1 year in prison is sickening. He should be in jail, not be honored by the dutch Olympic Committee to compete in the Olympics to honor his country, and judging by the fact that there are petitions, other citizens and other athletes that want him gone from the Olympics, clearly many people are frustrated by this, including Dutch citizens.

This is disgusting, coming from a Dutch person myself who has dealt with a family member being abused like this. The aggressor only got 6 months in prison despite having done this for many years starting when she was just 2, he also did similar stuff to another one of my sisters, wanting them to do the deed with his son. He was straight-up psychotic. The fact he only served 6 months is beyond me, this really needs a change and I thank you for bringing attention to it.

We dont have life in jail. Also we have privacy rights for sex offenders. A dutch person would never know if their neighbor is a chomo. In our country its very hard to prove rape after the age of 12. It becomes a he said she said situation. The low sentences make people reoffend allot of the time.

One year in prison is absolutely absurd the judge must have had relationships with him because he should have gotten at least 20 years at the minimum but 20 years is still not enough he should've gotten life
