The issue is the dishonesty. He lied to Grandpa about the purpose of the money. If he'd gotten by with it, he might have gone back later claiming he needed money for another child's wedding or college or repairs when it wasn't true. They saved their GP from being defrauded a 2nd time

20k is a LOT to spend on a wedding. I had my dream wedding and only spent not even 5k. With 10k they could easily have a very beautiful wedding. You just have to do a lot of the planning yourself. That being said NTA for telling grandpa what dad did. If they promised to help pay 10k then they should keep that promise. Terrible that he decided to pocket the money instead

In hear people saying 20K is a lot. But that amount was the budget, and all parties agreed to what they would contribute. The father not only backed out at the last moment on his promised share, but he stole the 1K the grandfather contributed. Something is up with the father, and I suspect gambling. Either way, the father needs to be held legally accountable. I would uninvite him, and sue him for renaging on a verbral agreement, plus for the 1K he outright stole.

Everyone is focused on the budget they were working with and not the fact that they were expecting a 20k budget and so planned accordingly “we have the money, so lets go all out so everyone can have a good time”, and then had half the budget go poof, *after* they had already bought half the stuff for the 20k wedding, meaning there was no budget left for the food and you cant really redistribute spent money, businessess that deal in weddings dont tend to be to big on offering redunds

I got married on 11/11/11 on our fourth year anniversary, yah, that was our anniversary date. Total cost was 900 bucks. No fancy party etc. Still married all these years later too.

My wife's parents paid for the chapel service, and we held a small celebration dinner in my parents' backyard, with food and a cake made by my grandmother. My second wedding my in-laws covered completely. But 20k?! Jeez, I know inflations crazy but if that's the best you get these days just elope.

$20,000 can be “low budget”-purely based on where you live. Think parts of California, parts of New York, or the city Chicago.

My wedding cost 5k, me and my wife wanted to keep it small. We had a meal and a buffet, catered. It also included our room for the night. Looking back I would do a lot differently. Granted one of those things would be stopping at the venue the night before, having to travel like I did was an absolute nightmare. I was exhausted after the ceremony, so I was struggling to stay awake for the reception. Ended up in bed at 9pm, full of coffee. I didn't drink at all that night.

Not only did our parents/family didn't attend our wedding and didn't pay anything out. Our wedding cost us less than $100. Friends & church contributed. Borrowed a dress, best man had flowers done, & food covered by church. We actually only paid for marriage license & a hotel for honeymoon. That was 25 years ago. Now daughter is getting ready to marry & they aren't asking for any money for theirs.

Weddings should be within YOUR own budget, not relying on others. But I also understand gifts or family that WANT to help out but it doesn’t sound like he wnated to but was maybe pressured into helping with the wedding because the other side of the family said they would. Lets roll back, they wanted a LOW BUDGET WEDDING. Yet both the mother and the father were expected to pay 10K each, as well as the grandpa to pay 1K. That makes over 20K, then again they had paid a part as well which for some reason was not mentioned. The lowest budget to have for an actually good wedding could be ONLY 5 to 10K. Yet their wedding costs MORE THAN 20K? Maybe even 30K. Honestly i wouldn't have helped at all if i was to be asked to pay 10K.

I think these people commenting about how they did their weddings so much cheaper are missing some points. A). The dad PROMISED. He should follow through. B). Sounds like OP + fiancé were going to do cheap wedding but the other parties freely offered the money so they feel obligated to spend that on what it's given for. C). Not everyone has family property to use or family who can cook the food or means to make it that much cheaper. D). Different places cost different prices whether that be the country or within separate areas around that country. E). Different cultures probably feel differently about how much is spent.

It is nice when parents support the wedding financially, but it is not a must. If you can't afford one, just do registration now at the municipal office and celebrate the wedding with guests traditionally a year later when you can afford it.

They were going for a cheap wedding untill both families put in their veto and wanted to pay 10k each for bigger wedding. All things wedding was change due to their request. Her Dad changed his mind 2 month before wedding is due. 2/3 is already paid for. Then Dad is also proven to have taken 1000$ given by grandpa meant for wedding.
