@@sylsuthss I haven’t watched it all the way through. I’m incredibly busy with a young family and honestly I can’t say that I will ever watch it because entire show is named after, organized and designed by Dave Ramsey who did verifiably file for bankruptcy after borrowing up to his eyeballs so I have a moral misalignment with that. It’s hard to take any advice telling people to buckle down and do the sacrifice to take responsibility for their mistakes and sometimes just life situations when he himself did not do that work and had discharged his debts leaving banks and companies holding that tab. It feels unauthentic to me.

At 86 with health issues no one will hire her to help her situation now , her past doesn’t matter it’s over and done with. No way she should give up her pet and emotional support. She could go to get low income assistance for her pet .

I was a 25 year old single mom with 2 children Had to get out of an abusive marriage. I made minimum wage. I found a used 10x40 mobile home that I financed for 2 years at $70 dollars a month and paid $30 a month to park in a decent but bare bones mobile home park .I bought kids clothes at a thrift store .If a button was missing on a shirt they sold it for 25 cents. It was a church run thrift shop. Bought our bread at a day old bread store, and ate lots of eggs ,peanut butter, and bought leg and thigh quarters to stretch into lots of meals. Had no credit card and drove an old clunker. We had a roof over our heads and plenty food to eat, but it wasn't fancy. I also paid a lady $20 a week to watch my kids after school for a couple hours until I got off work .We didn't have luxuries, but all our needs were met. We lived strictly on what I earned with no help. It isn't easy, but it can be done. I even managed to get the kids birthday and Christmas presents.

If she had cancer that may have cost thousand in medical costs? She may not have been able to work for long periods??? At 86 she would be vulnerable with tenants and even renting. That could be unreliable as stable accommodation. Is there senior type accommodation options? Retirement home? Dog food can be cheap if you make it yourself, rice, vegetables meat scraps As a financial debt counsellor for years here in Australia we could negotiate a debt waiver for the credit cards based on her age. I think it's important not to make assumptions without more facts But I agree 👍
@LostintheUS-2030

Australians are more human than US Americans. We (US Americans) tend to think there's a one size fits all approach to everything, except for owning guns. Clearly, medical care isn't cheap in the US. 20 years of cancer treatment in the US will bankrupt most US Americans. Plus, I believe the 86-year-old was suffering from some Dementia. I know. As I cared for several Dementia patients.

It wouldn't be a stretch to assume that the leukaemia did impact this lady financially. I also think her house is probably worth a lot more than she thinks - sell up and downsize. Debt gone!
@penelopeprimrose90
@penelopeprimrose90 3 месяца назад
It is also possible that her house is in a state of disrepair and the $200-250k range IS the inflated amount because of the area she lives in with the higher priced homes. I live in a neighborhood with $1 and 2 million dollar homes, all the way down to very run down $300k homes. That price is brought up because of the desirable neighborhood. I wouldn't even pay $300k for them, but investors come in and tear them down and build giant houses in their place.

On the bright side she must have done something right keeping a roof over her head for herself and child for all those years which is commendable and now has a house that now serves as a blessing to sell that will provide rent for her and her companion/family member/pet to have a home to live in. She may need some help navigating through this, its a humanity thing. With that said it is great to hear all the warnings about being calculating with life, expenses and the future. Thank you for all the shared information, getting it together best you can is a good thing

I had a babysitter that was at least 80 years old when I was a kid. I would go to her house after school until my parents came home from work. I called her Grandma and she became a part of our family. She was a very special person in my life. Even someone 86 years old could water the neighbors plants when they go on vacation or watch a middle grade school kid after school that shouldn't be home alone. Those are things that could earn some extra money for that lady. But I think Tawra's idea of selling her home and renting sounds like the best idea to give her financial security for the rest of her life.

if she (or someone in this situation), uses their home as collateral via HELOC - they will take her home if loan defaults. Thank God her credit cards are UN-secured debt. They cannot take her home. Bankruptcy may not be an option as she has no income for recovery (which is a condition). It would do her well to speak to an Estate Planner in HER STATE, as laws are different. I find it interesting that she called into the show wanting to know what to do about her debt. It sounds like it bothers her and she wants to find a solution (even though she didn't like any of the suggestions given). I do think she has options others may not because she has a paid off home. Unfortunately, there are many senior citizens in her position for a variety of reasons. Many use credit cards to bridge the gap. When they die, they debt dies with them. I do think people should be responsible, but at her age and with cancer, she probably won't live too many more years. The past is the past and she just has to move forward. Stressing over it won't do any good at this point. For everyone else out there, I do think she should be used as a cautionary tale of what can happen if you don't plan for the future and live within your means. Old age, illness, retirement...it's coming for all of us. For those without family to lean on, the need to plan for the senior years is even more important.

So she has to pay rent. She doesnt have maintenance costs and the other expenses that go along with home ownership. she will probably have capital gains taxes, but even so, the extra money can go into a high interest account and work for her while she is paying her rent. Thing is, she is going to have to make choices and some sacrifices to make these changes . That is probably the sticking point.

I made your pizza dough recipe tonight for dinner, so easy and cheaper than take out. If the lady has no money where is she driving the car to? gas and insurance are not free, most shops now deliver food. Sell the house and move somewhere cheaper, maybe assisted living housing ? a retirement home would cost the same as renting , but she would have food included and no bills. all the associated costs of owning a home, ( property taxes, water, hydro, gas etc ) add up. Luckily we have already downsized and are mortgage free before we hit 65.
@penelopeprimrose90

Independent living can be affordable, it's the assisted living facilities that are outrageously expensive. The smallest room (tiny) for one person starts around $4000 per month and some things are an additional fee (like helping with medication). If someone has a paid off home they can sell, that will help. There are still healthcare expenses, personal expenses such as clothing, haircuts etc. People living on SS only won't be able to cover that.

Which is why when I had my credit card, I charged only when I had the amount in the bank, and I had a set limit I would spend even though my credit card had a $250 limit. My amount was $75 and lower. Personally, at her age, lawn care, taxes, insurance, maintenance are all big expenses. I think she would be pleasantly surprised at what she could get for her home. My grandmother sold her home and got an apartment in a seniors complex with round the clock emergency help available, communal dining room and lots of activities. She had a small kitchenette for making her own food if she wanted too. A good financial plan to invest the sale from the house to supplement her SS.

Even if I spend 5 dollars and get 2-3 pieces of quality clothes and donate 2-3 more that don’t work I think it’s a win! Same with Christmas and gardening and decorating stuff.

By the time you get to 86 if you own your own house then you have lots of upkeep and expenses for yard care; therefore renting will be a lot cheaper in the long run.

I just truly believe George was a bit stern to get her to back up and choose one of the many other solutions they offered. When all options are on the table - go back to work, get rid of your dog, move in with your daughter, sell your house - it helps her think of them from best to worst instead of being able to refuse them one at a time. Like, “I’ll be the bad guy if it helps you make a better decision for your life” What he said was audacious but it’s also exactly what she needed to hear. I was also interested in if the daughter would inherit the house - if she wants the house she needs to supplement her mother’s income, if she doesn’t care then the mother can sell and go rent like Tawra said. I was EXTREMELY disappointed they didn’t say this Tawra and it worries me that there is a little bit of a spirit of worshipping money if you want some elderly woman to be barely scraping by in order to retain a valuable asset over selling and living comfortably until you die

Junk! People think garage sale or thrift store is junk. What do people think is going to happen to their Target and Kohls stuff!? It’ll end up in a landfill or at a thrift store after they get bored with it by next season! And they paid full price for it. They don’t think about what they’re saying

Yeah, if you are truly in financial trouble you have to do some combination of reducing the outgo and/or increasing the inflow. Sometimes people just want to whine or hope that someone swoops in and saves them....and sometimes it feels like a bizarre "I am poorer than you...." competition. I have two favorite mind experiments--one is what would happen to prices/services if none of us had credit cards and the other is what it would be like for prices/services/employment if there was no illegal immigration in our communities.

It is not ok to pay rent if it is 2X amount of your mortgage. Buy a smaller less expensive house. She also could rent out some of the bedrooms in the house. There are lots of corners to cut.

Great question you had at the beginning of your video. I was late yesterday and missed that part. I have listened to the DR show a few times and they always tell callers the same thing over and over and over. After awhile I started to wonder why people even call if they know what the team will say. So after that I stopped listening plus I was really upset about how Dave thinks are all renters are awful people. He has said it over and over. That really made me mad. I know lots of wonderful people who rent that are extremely responsible hard working people. I would Never rent a property from him after hearing that. Never. Hope his renters don’t know how he really feels about them. I am not surprised they did not tell her to sell her house and rent.

I pay all the bills, cards on the 1st of every month (some months the 2nd or 3rd or 4th due to holidays). I fill out electronic payments on the 23rd of each month to be paid the 1st - everything gets paid off on the 1st. I also pay a fixed amount each month on the electric and the water. For this reason, we are always ahead. When something comes up, we can stop those payments for 3-4 months without owing. I know, we could just put that money in an account but, if something happened to us (we travel together), those bills are paid ahead which gives the kids and Mom time to settle everything else without having utilities cut off --- you know when a loved one dies you are not thinking about bills right away...be prepared, be thoughtful. So, I just assume have the positive balance on the utility accounts than have it sitting in the bank earning $0.12/year (haha) these days. What works for you? Preparedness comes in many ways.

Most food is transported in trailers that is not temperature controlled. Like a car, a sealed trailer will be hotter than than ambient temperature outside. 78° is definitely not a problem for food storage. 😂

I would keep the dog but you can cut everything but food/water. Toys can be limited to basics. Grooming isn’t every month. Vet is once a year for vaccines and your local humane society has reduced fees for these. I say this because with her maybe not having a great relationship with her daughter elderly get very lonely and a little companion can make a huge difference in mental health. My mom worked with elderly. She said it’s amazing how many do not get hugs or get to give hugs to others.

People don’t realize that social services won’t help if you own a house and car. You would have to sell them and use all that money up, only a couple thousand dollars left in the bank and be very low income.

So many people are so sanctimonious about their minimalism in their stark white and grey homes they have decorated by copying off of Pinterest. And yes you may have a lot of “stuff” but most was free or bought at bargain prices and you have a large home to decorate which you do in a very homey, charming manner. I love seeing what you pick up and what you do with it

1. I don’t know why Dave needed to cuss. There’s a way to express yourself without. 2. Both Dave and George did actually suggest selling her house. 3. But yes, she should sell the house. That would take care of everything including the dog if she wanted to keep her companion when she’s likely near the end of her life.
