In 2007 he completely outplayed Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal back to back in Madrid & Paris Masters and won both tournaments. He also gave Novak Djokovic a Tennis lesson in Madrid.
In today's video, we're taking a look at his most brutal performance against Roger in the final.
Such a shame his career didn't live up to his talent..

Yet, he never won a GS.. Tennis Excellence is not to win a good rally or a match here and there, but to win 7 matches in a Row against the Best in the World, and then do it again.

Doesn't change the fact he toyed Federer..

Are you not aware that he defeated Djokovic, Nadal and Federer and then did it again two weeks later? It's almost as if you set up the question to get this answer

Also Nalbandian did win an ATP Tour Final games (which is next in importance after Slam tournament titles)-Federer won x6, Djokovic x7 & Nadal hasn’t been able to. And he did reach world no. 3, win 11 titles beating the big three multiple times even some in a row (a nearly impossible feat), make a Wimbledon Final and 5 major SF’s. So he is indeed one of the greatest tennis underachievers-who knows how many majors he’d win if only he had the passion and desire for more success!

Yes GS titles are the main measure of greatness, but there are a lot of factors and nuances that connect to makeup the overall accomplishment package of any great player such as how they reach or stay around the top (some careers are like a shooting star, some have brilliant moments against the best, some are like marathon reigns, some are like a fighting bull, some are like strategic specialists giving up on some other parts of what creates true value for tennis which a player contributes, all different generations & circumstances…). That’s why some players connect most with peers and fans, and some have more numbers in various areas of tennis performance & character.

I love watching your videos. Bringing back an incredible match from the history books. But man, your titles sometimes are so misleading. How can you call someone who beat all the big 3 in one tournament a 'wasted talent' and where did you see Nalbandian toying with Roger 🤠

Agree. These videos are pretty good to watch to refresh memories, but author itself wants to show to audience that has better knowledge 😁

Nalbandian is underrated and was much better than some of the current next gen players: Rublev, Rune, Ruud, Tsitsipas, Zverev and even Medvedev.

Toying with Federer is a little bit of a stretch of imagination. Nalbandian had lost the first game 6:1. He was not toying with anyone. Nalbandian had powerful, clean shots and that kept a lot of players at bay. Too pity he got injured and had to end his career so soon.

There are a lot of wasted talents. I would put Nalbandian in that group. Rios wasted his talents. Kyrgios is wasting his talent.Philopousis was a total waste of talent. He was smashing Sampras in the quarter finals and his knee went. He was about the same age as Federer when Federer finished the job, though remember that this was now an older Sampras. My comment is Australian-centric - so give me some leeway, Hewitt was dominating Federer when he was 19, 20, 21… the dude won the very first ATP tournament he entered as a short thin 16 year old against a prime Agassi. He sacked a brilliant coach who was snapped up by Agassi for the next ten years, purely to try to break Hewitt’s dominance, on not just him, but the entire sport at 20. Worst mistake of his life. He hired a pretty sub-standard coach who had no business in the men’s professional tennis at all. His parents controlled the way Hewitt saw the world - the way many tennis parents often do. Despite that he even came back from two set’s and 5-1 down in the third in Davis cup a, and came back to win. Federer’s global dominance was already established at the time, He wasted his talent by NOT firing his coach. He even beat Federer in the Halle final in their last match when his hip was gone. There are many ways to waste talent. He DESTROYED Nalbandian in a lopsided Wimbledon final. The real cause of Hewitt’s waste? Being weirdly loyal to a coach that did literally nothing to adjust his game though every tennis fan in Australia understood that he had to shorten his points for like 8 years due to the change in racket string technology. Hewitt only fired him way past his prime, and funny enough was briefly dangerous again. Because as mentioned beat Federer in the tournament he won the most, though ranked in the 40s or something. I wish Rafter had not had such bad injuries to his wrist and shoulder, retiring at just 27, and losing two consecutive Wimbledon finals, though out injured for 6 months. a healthy Rafter could have won 10 grand slams at least. That was frustrating. His pattern was that he would come back from injury and just DESTROY. He would have won an Aussie title except for getting cramps for the first time in his life against Agassi mid set and yet managed to win the third to be 2-1 up when the fatal cramping he just begun. This was a semi-final, and he was playing beautifully, and Agassi won the Australian GS without fuss after his luck then. I don’t mind that Rafter lost the last Wimbledon final because the big Croat deserved a crowning glory after so many GS final losses. It was a fairytale ending as he was unseeded and pleasingly it went five sets. Rafter’s shoulder was so cooked, he retired right after. I would say Flip was our biggest waste of talent right until Kyrgios came to keep the Aussie of Greek family origin tradition alive. Flip did not come close to fulfilling his talents, though like Nalbandian he won the Masters where the top 8 players play. To be honest seeing the otherworldly talents of Kyrgios being wasted is much harder, maybe because I have PTST from Flip (though of course I wanted Rafter to win his double US crown - everyone loved Rafter. Flip was complicated. Like Kyrgios he wanted to party and cruise on his ridiculous talent alone. At least with injuries, as with Rafter or Flip against Sampras, you can say - well you worked your arse off. Flip did cause many Aussie fans to feel challenged by watching work rate get in the way of success. Like Kyrgios, he had plenty of money, and the drive seemed to get sucked in by, being able to bear the best ‘on their day’”. . His one slam final was the rare all Aussie grand slam final, that Rafter won in 4. We were spoilt then, Hewitt. Rafter and Philopousis - no wonder we won Davis Cup with that crew. Rafter got us in the final, then of course his shoulder went. Flip came in the Final with Hewitt, so of course we won.

LOL. Most of Nalbandian's win came prior to 2004 when Federer was still coming into his dominance. He beat Federer twice consecutively in Fall 2007. When that happens, you know Federer is having a down time. Just like when Canas beat Federer twice in one month in Spring of 2007. The irony here is that Federer won 3 Slams and reached the final of the French in 2007. So clearly, he was playing well. But, putting that much effort into the Slams can lead to some down time throughout the rest of the year. His record in 2007 was 68-9, with four of those losses coming from Nalbandian and Canas. Coincidentally, Federer beat Canas 3 days before he lost to Nalbandian in one of the matches in October 2007. And Roger's only other loss to Nalbandian, after he started his dominance in 2004 was in the 2005 Championships after leading 2 sets to none. Federer lost the 3rd and 4th sets by 2 and 1 so clearly Federer had already packed his bags and brought the trophy home. They did get to a tiebreaker in the 5th that David won.

Aside from the very first point on the video, I am absolutely convinced you chose to highlight the worse points they've played on that match. Each point shown lasted 2 or 3 shots. Was not fun watching this.
