He Was Called the Dominican Michael Jordan! The Felipe Lopez Basketball Story. Felipe Lopez was the number one high school prospect after his senior year in 1994 that was called the spanish Michael Jordan when he was dominating New York City high school basketball.
One high school sports writer says, Felipe was the most hyped player to ever come out of New York City up to that point and there was more buzz surrounding Felipe than Lew Alcindor and Kenny Anderson.
His college and NBA career was a disappointment but Felipe had a special moment playing high school basketball in the 1990’s that left a mark.

His 1st mistake was going to St. John....big mistake. He should have gone to the #1 team in the country - with a lot of other great players. That way...he could blend in and work on his game.

FELIPE LOPEZ CHOICE OF ST.JOHNS OVER UCLA WASN'T A GOOD CHOICE FROM DAY ONE.FELIPE WANTED TOO ATTEND A SCHOOL WITH A LARGE SPANISH SPEAKING STUDENT BODY. UCLA WOULD'VE MADE HIM A MORE COMPLETE PLAYER. IT SEEMED LIKE NOT TOO MANY PLAYERS CAN ACTUALLY SHOOT WHO ATTENDED ST.JOHNS EXCEPT FOR CHRIS MULLIN AND WALTER BERRY.

Great reporting as usual. I'm not surprised by his humanitarian efforts after basketball. The one time I played with Felipe was a pick up game in the Gauchos gym and me being one of the least talented on the court, he kept trying to get me in the game. I didn't let him down. The last play, he came down, had a lane for the dunk, but he dished it out to me for the three and I made the shot. He was probably the coolest All-American player I ever had the pleasure of playing with or against. So, again, I'm not surprised. Bless his heart. Mature beyond his years.

Thanks for the Interesting video. As soon as I heard you say Felipe had more hype than Lou Alcindor I figured this player was going to be somewhat of a bust. What's also interesting is that back in Alcindor's day I did hear and read about him from a Life magazine article, on the other hand with all the media we had comparatively speaking in a more modern time I had never heard of Felipe.

Felipe was the real deal.First saw him at Golden Hoops the summer before he started his freshman yr at Rice.I wasn't impressed. My man Tom Konchalski told me keep an eye on him.I followed his H.S career and he was unbelievable.Could handle, rebound, pass, shoot and play D.I really saw him being an MJ type player. The games against St.Raymonds H.S ( with Kareem " Best Kept Secret" Reid) are legendary.Games had to be moved to Iona College in New Rochelle or Fordham U....Dominicans ( who at the time knew nothing about basketball) used to come to the game with cowbells, whistles and pride, cheered everytime Felipe did anything and really went wild when he dunked( which was at least 3 times a game).I believe Felipe chose St.John's with his heart because he didn't want to be far from the ppl that supported him.He should've chose a program that fit his uptempo style ( which St.John's wasn't equipped for). The ppl making the overrrated NYC comments didnt see this guy play.I'm glad to be one of those who did.

He just was afraid of succeed, was afraid of greatness. You could see it in his eyes back then. He used to penetrate a lot with good crossovers and very good moves and when having the shot at the rim he just wasn't brave enough to shut it, he just passed the ball everytime. I remember him playing with the wizards, Richard Hamilton wasn't even the half of good that kid was but he succeeded because he had no fear of it.
