As a ND fan I remember him well, he should’ve stayed at ND. Golson was academically ineligible in 2013, and as much of a gamer as Rees was he was limited, interception prone and didn’t have the job locked up (had already lost his 2011 starting job to Golson in 2012). On an unrelated note, Kiel wen from 18 to 30 years old in college (those pics 😅).
When you’re a top recruit and set to run the program, you don’t sit and wait for an opportunity. They should have given him the opportunity, even if it were a few snaps in the beginning.
These videos feel so surreal because I remember being 15 hearing about this dude since I read Sports Illustrated constantly and now it’s just a speck of dust out of the many things that have happened but I still remember them. Feels like the theme from Up is perfect for these moments.
I was 15 when Kiel was at Cincinnati and my dad and I had season tickets his first year there. He was absolutely electric that season but I’ve heard through mutual in the UC football program that he got addicted to pain killers from all his injuries
The Irish have had a lot of top prospects that just seemed to disappear. I remember when Kiel first came in. Notre Dame has another highly recruited running back named Davonte’ Neal. In the spring they said he was explosive and that he would be taking over punt return duties. After that though I never seemed to hear about him again. I enjoyed the video though. Go Irish!
It really sucked watching him and his brother as we were growing up in Columbus, IN. They were great QBs for us and we really hoped that both would make it. Was just really disappointing to watch them both fade out of relevance and not go pro.
Enjoyed the video, thank you for putting it together. The player on your video cover page, however, is Dayne Crist.. another ND 5* that never delivered
I love ND and thought this guy had potential. Rees was a game manager but Golson showed hope so makes sense he got buried. Also dont hate on Book, Book forced a top recruit to transfer already since Book was better. Hope he is doing well. Please do Michael Floyd from ND. His story of hard work getting to ND is awesome then his fall due to alcohol is a story that needs to be heard.
I’m a graduate of Cincinnati and I was a student during these years. Gunner was talented, but our team was a huge mess. It’s not all his fault and like you said. His body started to give out on him. It sucks but even when he was third string he embraced it. Good dude and wish him well. Glad the Bearcats in better hands with Fickell. #GoBearcats
Kiel also got addicted to pain killers after the injury at Memphis. That played a big role in Tuberville not playing him his senior year. I remember hearing a lot of drama about this on local sports radio.
@@ScottFisherCFB Yeah, which was more a symptom of the Tuberville era allowing that to happen. That program was a complete mess. I also don't think he really recovered from his concussion.
Very accurate as a Cincinnati fan. Days when he woke up on the right side of the bed he would have near perfect games. Days he woke up on the wrong side of the bed he looked less than mediocre and played that way. Very inconsistent. One week he’d break school/conference records. The next week he couldn’t complete a successful play to save his life.
Same. I've heard that Gunner's dad (also an IU alum) demanded that his brother Dusty (who was at IU at the time) start or else Gunner would decommit. But seems more likely Dusty saw what was going on behind the scenes and told Gunner to stay away.
Good analysis. Good comparison with the Joe Burrow situation. I agree that Kiel looked older when he finished up college - 10 years older at least. He didn't appear very fit either. I do think those things hurt him.
I just like when you do ND players. You could do 5 star QB Dane Christ, he was a little before Keil if I remember correctly. But another 5 star QB at ND that didn’t work out
Might have been a good idea for kiel to have tried out in the Canadian or even the Arena football league . Wasn't the NFL but at least he would have had maybe a five year career in the pros . One big mistake he made in college was to switch from LSU to Notre Dame . It seemed like LSU really wanted him .
Gunners disappointing career can be summed up by 3 things: 1) Lack of Consistency 2) Tommy Tuberville 3) Opioids (Rumored as to why he missed the Hawaii Bowl) You should also look into Tuberville’s Cincy players and their opioid usage. This was all the talk and discussion towards the end of Tommy’s shitty career (and he told us in the student section to go to hell).
He should have stayed at ND and battled it out with Golson & Rees. If he was so good he should have been able to beat them out after some experience. Gave up too easily.
Ishaq Williams 5 star recruit ND LB/DE. Should make for a good video . From stealing him at the last minute from PSU to him never living up to the hype. Hope he's doing well.
@@midwestlion3197 yep. Nix just got shot. Was getting air in his tire. And someone accidentally shot him. Hasn't been out of the hospital very long. But is doing better.
During the Brian Kelly era of qbs so far Ian book was the better qb in the system Notre Dame ran, Deshone Kizer had potential just wasn’t good enough including Zaire, Everett Golson was a a above average qb who regressed and tommy Reese was a 3 star Qb that wasn’t great but ok in lower tier schools, Andrew Hendrix Telegraphed throws a lot otherwise he would have had a decent career at Notre Dame I think the biggest bust was Dayne crist!
He decommitted from LSU because he couldn’t be away from his mommy his mom was my landlord at the time and she talked to my mom and dad all the time about how he was scared to leave home shits sad
Him his dad and brother would constantly be outside to throwing football they had a nice goal post in there yard wish he would’ve went to LSU and played with that system I think he would be in the nfl today
This guy played against my highschool. He went to Columbus East and I went to Jennings County. (They beat us like 77-0 his senior year lol) I was in 8th grade at the time
In my opinion I think he should have gone to a school like Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State, or Michigan. It's true his injuries did pile up, but it's sad to see what could have been flamed out in the end.
@Ryan O'Toole oh word ok. Either this video didn't say that or I just didn't listen well enough but thank you. You right tho, alot of em do end up busts or they end up being stuck as 3rd or 2nd string and never develop anymore past HS so their dream of the NFL is shut down.
I remember this guy, but looking at him on this video it's clear that he just wasn't that good, not sure what type of competition there is in that part of Indiana but I'm seeing loose balls and terrible technique. Not to mention he's got a weird build, big ass giant humongous arms with skinny legs throwing the ball with javelin technique???
