Join me in a journey into hip hop lore to discuss one of hip hop's forgotten legends lost in time. He's a rapper that barely anyone remembers but for a moment in the mid 90s he was considered to be one of the rappers that would lead hip hop into the next generation. Why was he so hyped and why does nobody remember him, and how is his legacy so important in the first place?
I want to give recognition to the following sources that helped me flesh out this video.

It's probably the best line in hip hop period. We'll...maybe not MF DOOM, says few can see the point like a line through the Hubble...another genius line in my opinion. Whilst you didn't say this and I am in no way attributing this to you, I think labeling Canibus as lyrical miracle is very reductive and stems from his conceptual impenetrability...Canibus is such a hard listen it's frustrating. The reductionism I am talking about is reducing I honor you to a song that personifies sperm...really! Is it not about a consciousness that wills itself into existence but has to do it through trite human means like human reproduction...also conveniently ignoring the fact that this is a song a son wrote detailing his relationship with his mother, talks about a dead beat father and basically that he was raised by single mother and sperm is the thing that sticks out. And this is by far his simplest song!!!

still can’t believe they told us LL won that beef. one of the things that woke me up to the reality of power and industry in music as a youngin…and the relative muteness of conscious rap…and the fact black thought never saw biggie/tupac level success
@dn30001
@dn30001 4 месяца назад
LL won the war....not the battle. Black Thought is my favorite, but he never had the charisma of a Big or Pac. Thought is at a point in his career where he is JUST NOW letting the public know who he is as a person. Because before now, he was just a single layered technical rapper backed by a band and allied/aligned with "conscious rappers". And then you add the marketing corporate backing that Big and Pac had. Thought's acumen just wouldn't translate commercially well over the beats and imagery that Big and Pac were guided by. But VERY FEW are seeing Thought technically live on stage or off the top of the head.

That’s why he had several tributes to DJ Screw and the Screwed Up Click (Fat Pat, Lil Keke, Big Moe, Big Pokey, Z-Ro, etc) and UGK in his early years. Devin The Dude falls in that category as well. Even his song November 18th was a remake of a 1990’s DJ Screw and Lil Keke song. Despite what FD says…the South was blowing up in the 1990’s. Please understand what he’s been up against. When you go up against Eminem, you’re NEVER walking away with the popular vote… no matter how dope you are. I saw it firsthand in real time. I’m 40 years old today… Class of 2001. I watched Sisqo change the world in real time too. Very literally overnight, the granny panties, bloomers, and period panties all straight up vanished. Like, I saw the shift. Same thing with Eminem. Folks moved us to the suburbs in the early 90’s… My new classmates put me onto Nirvana and Green Day… I put them onto the Wu, Public Enemy, Eric B. and Rakim, etc. A few liked it. Nothing mesmerizing, tho. But let me tell you… Sway and Tech dropped a track with Eminem on it… then My Name Is dropped… and overnight, my classmates who shrugged at Eric B For President and Paid In Full suddenly came into school as lifelong hip hop historians overnight knowing every single word that Shady ever spit. So please understand, Eminem himself absolutely IS hip hop. And he’s definitely dope! But his supporters weren’t into hip hop until he came around. So they very literally don’t even know of a rap world outside of the guy who put em onto it. They’re the male version of Beyoncé’s BeyHive. The facts and truth are easily accessible… Em’s “style” that he’s credited for ain’t his. He got it from a New Jersey rapper. And he’s been credited as the pioneer of the multi syllabic rhyme pattern but he’s neither the first nor the best. Canibus was on that for sure … and definitely can’t forget this next guy… Big Pun! Pun was different, yo.

Now 43, my parents had us seeing a therapist before we reached double digits, but an ADHD diagnosis didn't exist yet (to my knowledge). It's interesting seeing so many people be diagnosed or questioned with adhd right now. I was diagnosed when I was like 8 in the early 90s. I took meds for it, was constantly given tests and put into special rooms. It hit me the hardest in college and work life. But it was still never considered a big deal for a long time. In fact, once social media exploded, people were saying EVERYONE has adhd because the internet. Which is of course highly offensive. But the amount of care people have for adhd now is quite surprising to me.

Combine that with disconnected parents, being raised by screens. So of course kids that went all in and explored farther came off "odd" to everyone else. I know why I'm not easy to relate to and yeah to get that you gotta try and meet people in the middle and understand them too. I mean kind of what JC taught right? @Naxireal politely disagree, lot of what society deems "weird" or "off" are more often than not just ND traits. Highly recommend doing in depth research into 2023 medical understandings and diagnoses of autism/adhd/bipolar disorder, they present themselves in so many ways that just traditionally get viewed as "weird" by societal standards. Something as simple as being able to fully immerse yourself into a hobby until you're content with your ability to perform in it is a ND trait. That's not to say every "weird" person is on the spectrum, but the odds of a weird kid being on the spectrum are way higher than someone we'd call "not weird" being ND

I put your video on randomly to watch while drinking my coffee and damn if it didn't make me an hour late to work. You have a really compelling narrative style, which combined with the subject matter (I was so hyped for Canibus in the 90s, and soooo disappointed by his debut), drew me in and wouldn't let me go. Subscribed and can't wait to watch more of your stuff (but probably not before work).

I could listen to 100 episodes of you dissecting hip hop history from the 80s and 90s up to now, the cultural and technological changes, the different eras, and even the breakdowns of what makes a good song. You can tell this stuff is coming from a place of passion for you. The Canibus bars were so fun, even if "lyrical miracle spiritual individual" is not in the zeitgeist anymore it always has a place in my heart.

“You can't beat me you can't control+alt+delete me” ngl, this is pretty tricky for a general audience of late 90s. like you said, it’s nerdy stuff written for nerds. though there were infinitely less of those compared even to 00s, let alone further down the road. i loved the video. this type of long shots about obscure artist’s story presented with a genuine admiration and passion is what i greatly appreciate in music related content. thanks for all the effort put into this video 🙌🏼

Man, I spent 2003-2005 trying to get people to listen to Canibus' "Mic Club" and "Rip The Jacker." He went off on some weird directions, but I felt like he was - bar none - one of the best lyricists on the planet at that time. He basically had a career resurrection in the underground after his mostly failed attempt at mainsteam acceptance. Dude eventually kinda lost the thread, but he'll always be a favorite. Edit: Damn, I never saw that 2010 battle. That shit is tragic. 😬 Love this video. 👍

I'm not sure why people put so much emphasis on that one battle yeah it wasn't good for cannabis but it's not that big of a deal it's not like a career-ender it just was a bad night and I don't get why people are born so much it means nothing

I low-key think that was chess move by Bis, like for publicity to see if he could garner attention. I mean really think about who bis is and was. He still dropping music to this day

This video is very much appreciated. Canibus was a lyrical god in the late 90's. I had the entire 2000 B.C. album memorized at one point. Great times.

I saw how long this video was and originally decided to only stay long enough to know who it was about... Then I realised that I recognised the bars... At that point I had to watch the whole thing. Great video man. So many things that I didn't know about him.
