I recently did this in a parking lot in 2 days ducking from security every 10 minutes. I had done it once before replacing only passenger side cylinder...the other side blew 2 years later, so i replaced both again with new castings heads(not rebuilt with heli coil nonsense). I zero mechanic experience and bought a 600.00 4runner with bad transmission. I had to swap transmission twice becasue the first one was bad also from ebay. only to find the cylinder head was toast as well as fixing countless other parts. gotta love those 3vze exhaust headers! I damaged 50.00 gasket because it was so difficult to get passenger side head on and header. Luckily I had spare on hand. 3 years later and I still have not completely got it running perfectly. carefull of aftermarket radiators with caps that are rated incorrectly. also, you are better off reading a book about horses than you are reading the Hanes manual for this 3vze. it is full of errors.
U my friend have finished the toyota crash course training and can now be noticed as a professional,😂 accurate comment. Especially the part abou the book. The haynes and other book both have errors and mislead u back and forth only to show more about 4-cylinder engines
That sounds just like my first 4runner. Bought for 700 as tranny somehow got solitario in half, 1st tranny from junk yard didnt have reverse so did it again and next week headgasket blew
I just found out I have a blown gasket this morning working on my 88 v-6 YOTA😰. Well I got almost 33 yrs out of it.. time to replace. Thank you for the video!✌️🏜️
Thank you very much. I have 1990 Toyota 4 runner, looks same as yours, trying to fix one by one, spent lot so far without success, no stopping until starts running, your advice very much appreciated, thanks again.
Tip for getting that off easier 4:07 put the breaker bar on the bolt and rest the handle of the bar on top of the frame and turn the key and crank the motor. The motor turns clockwise and it will break the but easy. I’ve done it a few times like that lol
This is worth it everyone if you work on your own truck but not if you have a shop do it. It’s faster and about the same price to buy a new used motor and swap the motor.
Didn't know first thing about auto anything 6 months ago... got a 95runner with dead tranny...swapped with a good used one. Turned out, the seller had re-tapped a plug hole and used wrong plug and screwed me over on the engine, but I didn't know that util after I swapped tranny. ..I just did everything this video showed in a few days. I had no idea I had chosen a difficult vehicle to learn on.. now I know why I used so many curse words last few months. ..my next rebuild will be a razor scooter
I just did one of these and you really can't remove the heads with the crossover pipe intact. I tried it with two helpers and it wasn't happening. I dropped the down pipe, and unbolted the drivers side only. It was a rather brutal process. I ended up removing all the studs when the heads were off, and used bolts, and lock washers for reassembly. The nuts start coming off nice, and easy but they get really stuck about half way.
I did my truck a few years ago and I think I remember leaving the crossover and exhaust manifolds on. I remember having a hard time with the nuts in the crossover and I believe I removed the studs from the heads.
Not sure where you ran into issues but I've had 3 of these apart always with the crossover pipe intact... it's always been waaaaay easier than trying to get the pipe loose. Just my 2 cents
the cool part about you taking the video of all the lines is that now i dont have to do it and i can just watch your video when i put it back together XD
Really this problem started when asbestos had to be removed from head gaskets as pre 90 trucks didn’t have the same issues, dealers were getting blocks decked because of etching and slapping new gaskets on poor deck surfaces failed again, Toyota updated the replacements many times so the new replacements should be ok as long as the surfaces are good
I own a 95 4Runner with the 3.SLOW (3VZE) and as much as I love it. This is what I’m afraid to do. My car (as of the time I’m writing this comment) has 113k miles
Best thing to do before even raising the hood on this junk is get a book of wire markers to label the puzzle maze of vacuum hoses. Another tip with these: If you are getting coolant in the oil, check the oil cooler first before starting the war of pulling the heads.
Thanks for the great video. Just wondering, do you have to take the cam shaft out or can the head be removed with all the camp shaft and valves attached if you are just replacing the head gasket. What other parts are recommended to be replaced if one tears down that far. I have a leaking head gasket (rather bad) which happened at 240K miles
Im at the part where your video starts. Just looking at my poor Yota and thinking of all the work ahead of me. I have never torn down and rebuilt a motor. But the alternative... I can't afford. Looks scary.... damn it... here goes....
If you've never torn down an engine and done a rebuild or overhaul, the 4runner is the wrong vehicle to get started with. I've rebuilt several engine before and the 4runner has been by far the most pain on the ass vehicle that I've worked on. So many damn vacuum and coolant hoses. So much pluming. Most will have to be replaced. I seriously doubt you will succeed in rebuilding your 4runner engine. Hope you have someone to guide you at least. I just finished rebuilding my whole engine. Turned on like a charm. My problem is that 1 month after it was running great, I noticed it started leaking coolant. The problem was a 30mm freeze plug on the back of the right hand (passenger) side cylinder head. I always replace the freeze plugs on my engine blocks but I never have on the cylinder heads and now I've paid the price. Since there's no access to the back of the cylinder head cus it's so close to the firewall, now I have to remove the head in order to remove all the freeze plugs and to install new ones. Since so much has to be done, I might as well remove the 2 heads. I will also be replacing the freeze plugs in front of the cylinder heads. What a bitch lol. Also, I recommend using silicone gasket on the valve cover gaskets even though they are brand new. Oil leaked on the rear of my 2 valve covers eventhough I used the silicone as recommended, on the rear corners where the valve cover gaskets meets the corners of the last camshaft caps.
I am just getting started (deciding whether or not to take it to a shop) on the head gasket replacement. I have done some top end work on the truck before, and am wondering; why do you need to remove the crankshaft pulley? Seems far out of the way. 🤔
Man I had a 3.slow for like a who week before I sold it due to v8 gas mileage with 3cyl power lol. 3.0 is definitely not worth it when it come to watching this. Easier to do a v8 350 swap haha
I unfortunately have a '90 Toyota pickup with this hellish engine in it and regret ever having this engine, should've swapped it with the 3.4 instead of putting a new crate 3.0 back in it
can you please get in contact w/me? i believe we may have the same car etc & also to the person who published this video, please email me. this isn't a robot commenting i am a real person w/ head gasket issues. EMAIL: Manolobusiness12@gmail.com
@@manolofigueroa6226 There has been a recall, depending on the year of Toyota, Call a dealer, give them your information concerning Engine number, Vehicle ID number, etc. You may be part of the recall.
When I take the intake manifold off instead of trying to remember all the vacuum lines etc. I just fold it over and then bungee it to the hood ribbing so it's not sitting on the lines. and that way most of that stuff doesnt have to come off. Makes it much less iffy to remember
Use multicolored zip ties. One on the hose and one where it goes, double up for more color options if needed. Snip off the ends and leave them on for future reference!
the 3vze was a bad design from JAPAN i have resorted to put a chevy 350and trans into my 91 3 head gasket replacement in 100k miles and sheared crank shaft pulleys bad design Mr Oishi the rest of the truck is an excellent now ill have truck that will kick ass once i step on the gass and a lot easier to fix
Thank you, for the video, when re-assembling the upper manifold intake, what are the correct torque value on the (4ea.) long bolts,(2ea). corner nuts,(2ea.) "Torx style" bolts? thank you
Wondering if its a good idea to buy the whole felpro head gasket kit with all the other gaskets or just a generic one with all the gaskets for half the price
Nice! Wedge a prybar through the gear and use a impact wrench on the bolt or with the valve cover removed there should be a spot on the camshaft were a open-end wrench fit tightly. Use the wrench to hold the camshaft and then loosen the camshaft bolt. Hope this helps
Is it even possible to remove the heads with the coolant crossover pipe still attached? I was thinking the alignment dowels/studs would pose a problem due to the VA shape.
If it's the little box I think your referring to it is apart of the crank case ventilation system. I may be mistaken but I think it's to help prevent any oil from getting into the intake system caused by engine blow-by.
There is no way I would attempt to change head gaskets. I think I would opt for replacing the whole engine... or even getting a different vehicle. The process of replacing gaskets is far too exhausting for someone at my age. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing the video.
Man this is just not true. The 3vze engine is inherently flawed in headgasket and exhaust design. I've had 6 of these appart for headgaskets and they all failed in the same spot. Doesnt matter if you granny them or not they blow either way
Thomas Mostyn I’ve had several also, including buying a few brand new, never had an issue with head gasket or overheating, I’d recommend maintenance to prevent overheating. My current ‘88 I’ve owned over 20 years, no issues whatsoever, better power by far than the 4 cylinder!
Brad Fiedler I’ve never had to replace my head gasket on my current ‘88 4runner, stock oem toyota would be best! Keep up on your maintenance! If it does run hot, pull it off the road and don’t continue driving a hot motor! You won’t blow a head gasket, fix whatever cooling system portion no performing, up to and including the radiator.
I have an 89 Toyota 3.0 V6 and it runs really rough it's it's in an idle it runs just fine but if you put it in gear it runs really shity and it stinks really bad I have put new plugs wires cap I don't know what it is and I keep getting guesses from people Toyota wants me to bring it to them and it cost me $400 from the you look at it I don't know if they think I'm rich or what but I don't know lost for words anybody out there knows how to fix this thing it would be wonderful because I live in it and it's my home and I only want to get it fixed if you know what it could be send me a text
The best place I found for help with the 89 to 95 Toyota trucks has been this forum. There you will find experts who have lived with these trucks and know things no stupid service "technician" can imagine. www.yotatech.com/forums/f120/toyota-v6-problems-133719/ .
you do from the camshaft gears but if you don't plan on replacing the timing belt you can leave it on the crankshaft gear without having to remove the lower timing cover and pulley. it does make it a little more tricky to set timing but it can be done
Im dong to this to see if i got any damage . My engine locked up and im going to see whats not allowing the engine turn over manually.I tried turning the crankshaft manually and having no luck so im going to see if there is any problems in there
did It seize up after sitting overnight or while it was running? If it did it while it was sitting overnight and then didn't crank morning it's likely coolant in the cylinder from head gasket leak.
to be honest everybody's afraid of the head gaskets on this V6eze cylinders everything is easy the only part that I'm afraid of the vacuum lines everything else easy cake
