The Thomas Salto, is a technique that was used in a gymnastic floor routine first pioneered by american gymnast Kurt Thomas. It was a tucked 1½ backflip with 1½ twists ending in a forward roll.
The main danger here is the athlete landing head first into a roll.
(the backflip is often referred to a backwards Salto which is the gymnastic term for sommersault) which is why its called the Thomas Salto
The Thomas Salto Roll-out took near-perfect timing to avoid either under-rotation (and landing on the chin) or over-rotation (and landing on the back of the head).
It was banned following a series of incidents including the paralysis of the soviet gymnast Elena Mukhina.
As a result of her injury and other similar incidents, the Thomas salto and other rollout techniques have been removed from the Code of Points as an allowed skill for women and more recently for men too.

When watching the playlist of these banned techniques, the two reasons that tend to be consistent across all of them are that they were either banned for providing an advantage to a limited number of athletes, or there was a potential risk in performing the technique. In most cases of the latter it seems they were banned before any notable injuries were reported, but it's truly sad that someone had to be paralyzed before this one was removed. I get that gymnastics carries a risk in general, but a technique that's designed to land near the head has a higher potential for damage than others would. At the same time, the blame lies entirely on her coach for making her train while she was still injured, there's no excuse for that.

It must be terrible to be paralyzed in young age for someone who lives through sport :-(

Many of these videos have shown techniques banned for safety concerns that seemed overblown. The cartwheel shot put in particular comes to mind. But landing head down after jumping several feet in the air? Yeah, probably for the best to cut this one out, even if those rollout landings look really nice.

Jéssica Gil Ortiz, the girl form the second clip, wasn't performing a Thomas Salto. It was banned after the Barcelona '92 Olympics. th last gymnast who perfromed was He Xuemei.

I've never thought there was a more justified ban of anything ever, like no shit that lead to a bunch of broken necks.

That looked great when it was performed as intended. But understand why it was banned. I also think this video says a lot about the conditions the Soviet athletes had to live and work in. I have heard similar stories about other sports in the Soviet Union and people are not worth anything

It should have been banned the moment it was first performed in competition. Even the diagram looks dangerous.

Seriously, rollouts should have not been there in the first place and even dive rolls should require mandatory mats.

Forgive my ignorance, but why would this be even more challenging for a woman than for a man? Didn't understand that part. Obviously she specifically was still recovering from an injury, but the video made it sound like it was harder for women anyway,

Men have more power (on average) which means higher jumps, faster spins etc...

In general, women are more supple, men have more power, and the apparatus chosen for each sex reflects that. It's only recently with the trend for slightly older, more explosive women like Biles that this is starting to change.

The same reason why there are separate categories for men and women in any sport. The men are physically much stronger and faster, making it unfair to have them play eachother. That same strength translates to jump height. The men's high jump world record is over 8 feet. The women's is 6"10. On average a man can jump about a foot heigher than a woman assuming both are physically fit. That extra foot of jump height means they have more time to finish the rotation and land the trick rather than hitting their neck. There are many animals which display sexual dimorphism, like cows and bulls, deer and bucks. Humans work that way too.

It's really sad what happened, but Elena's broken leg and the terrible coach were probably the main reason for her accident (and I really hope he was punished). I do agree the salto should be banned, but banning all the flips landed in their heads is just too extreme. Actually, iirc, the the simple head flip (and backflip) isn't banned, right? I kinda see it everywhere in women gymnastics since it's totally secure and there's enough height for any athlete to perform it. It looks amazing and you don't land head first, it's literally the hands that go to the ground first, then the back or the chest, depending on the orientation of the flip.

Considering they were from the Soviet Union I doubt the coach faced any punishment. He should have since he f-ing knew her leg was broken and no where near healed yet forced her to train. He likely told her to either perform or they would ban her or threaten her or her family or something. In the US and several other countries she'd have been pulled. Like Simone is the popular one now. If it was hee she'd be out till she healed. But I'm assuming the Soviet Union was desperate to win the Olympics.

Oh, no, he wasn't punished. The entire coaching team pushed her, even the doctors who removed her cast against her will..:( After the accident, they all hid the accident and denied it all, and didn't offer her any help. Her parents died when she was a toddler, her grandma was raising her, so no one was advocating for her.. :( She died at 46 from complications of her being paralyzed.

I don't get the sexist women-only ban though.
