Degrease an aircraft canopy made of acrylic glass / PMMA / Plexiglas® only with isopropanol or benzene-free cleaning naphtha! Other solvent such as acetone or methanol / alcohol may cause cracks / permanent damage!

Thanks Tim! Yes it's definitely a lot of work to create such a product, especially if it is a completely new design. Capturing the canopy flashers in the air is nearly impossible. Or do you have some good footage from the air?

​​@@SteFly is it possible to add a fuselage flasher to my gear doors and engine bay doors? I'd like to have one below and one on top as well as the canopy flasher. Today Flarm gave me a head on alarm. That's never great. At least I got the alert. 😳 My concern is flying sea breeze and thermal flight. Those times we are at a disadvantage to perform "see and avoid".

Is it only available with a green light? I saw the IGC is proposing that gliders need to have a red or white strobe for contests.

Then they will also include green in the future. There is no reason to limit the color if it is visible.

This is great for head-on collision avoidance. 👍 Next project for you could be an omni-directional strobe light that goes on top of the tail, that will improve visibility for gliders in the same thermal…

Nice video. I'd be really careful which solvents I let near a polymer canopy, isopropyl alcohol is mostly safe, something just called 'cleaning spirit' might be a mixture of many solvents and could contain a problem. Good idea to have a USB charge socket inside the cockpit. How long before people attach green light sensors to their tails and play at chasing each other until it records a 'kill'?

The relative sensitivity of the retina to color is one of several factors that determines conspicuity. I'd like to see someone mount red, white, and green flashers on an airplane and empirically determine which color is noticed first. What works in the Dolomites might not work as well against a forested mountain.

That's a cool device. Did you know that lidar lasers can detect dust in the air and even measure which direction it is moving at different distances from the laser? I started doing research on this when I discovered that I could see more of a dust devil with polarized sun glasses on than with my naked eyes. I thought, what if there was something that could see the dust even better and found lidar lasers. I believe that someday someone with money will finally figure this out and mount one that rotates in a full circle on the top of the tail or maybe on the bottom of the glider so it can sweep downward and forward. There is always some level of particulate in the air so the laser will be able to see what air is moving up, what air is moving down, and how fast it's moving. Air that is particularly thick with particulate will also be a signal of a thermal. The pilot will have something similar to a radar screen in the cockpit that updates as the laser rotates. This will give a map of all of the thermals within a couple of miles of the glider. With this thing you will be able to see all of the thermals that you used to fly right by because they were 400ft to the right of your flight path. Lol This device will likely spark a lot of debate once it's made. Can you imagine someone showing up to a competition with one and being allowed to use it because there's no rule against it? Lol New records will be broken with it too. All I ask is that whoever takes this and turns it into reality gives it my name and gives me credit.

I also have read an article from Sebastian Kawa about the LIDAR system. But of course it would be awesome to have such a system. We are currently at the point where the new sensor platforms are nearly showing us the real time data of wind and correct vario. In my opinion this is already a big milestone to the historical TEK variometers, with which most of us are flying around. Next week we will also publish more information to a new sensor platform called Larus, which is very capable and a big milestone.

​@@SteFly i also looked into it if commercial available Lidar systems are adaptable for gliders. As far as I know they are still to big and need a lot of power and computation time. Those are used for finding best spots for wind energy farms. Also for combining it with an augmented reality system a lot of calculation power is needed because the reference view is always changing. But i am sure this will be solved someday.

No, there is a non-locked connector and some loose wire, so that it won't affect the canopy jettison.

In my opinion glider producers should install this kind of stuff in every single new glider by standard. For safety reason each present glider owner should by obliged to install this strobe light as well. What when if we only focused on to someone's bright flashing lights in the airborne and then nonflashing glider user came suddenly from nowhere? It will be better for our community than each glider obligatory could has that stuff.

They already do. Almost every manufacturer uses the SOTECC canopy flasher in their new models and these are built in per standard

Glaubst du das ist auch ne gute Idee mit dem Laser am Hang? Ich meine da haben wir ja oft starke Vorhalte Winkel, die dazu führen, dass man bei „frontalem Kollisionskurs“ die Nasen nicht aufeinander gerichtet…. Wenn der Laser zu wenig streut, besteht doch dann auch einfach die Gefahr, dass man am Lichtkegel vorbei fliegt, oder?

That's the job of the Flarm anti collision device. Most gliders in Central Europe are equipped with it and it will also warn you acoustically. When the flasher control box detects a glider ahead, then the flash frequency will increase.

is it a strobe light or a laser? a laser that starts giving you voice warning signals when another aircrafts intercept the leaser by heading head on towards you is what i thought this was, this is the one technology that all aircrafts should have.

it is only a very bright LED. And if FLARM detects a possible collision it flashes faster.

@@christophostrowski3382 Hahahaaa, mit der Rundumleuchte bräuchtest du so viel Akku, dass der Gleitschirm nicht mehr fliegt. Bei einer Annäherung von Segelflugzeug und Gleitschirm verdoppelt sich die Annäherungsgeschwindigkeit zum Glück nicht und auch die Silhouette vom Gleitschirm ist besser zu sehen, als bei einem Segelflugzeug. Trotzdem wäre das natürlich cool!

Bringt bei uns nichts. Wenn wir ein FLARM dabei haben warnt uns das (im Gegensatz zu den Segelfliegern) nicht vor anderen in der Luft. Damit kann es zumindest nicht den Flasher schneller schalten. Es ist aber ein gutes System um ein Segelflugzeug noch besser auf die Entfernung zu sehen, sind wir auf Kollisionskurs meldet sich der Segelflieger bei dir deutlich. Ich habe so einen Flasher vor kurzem mal lange sehr nah in der Luft erlebt (fünf Tüten drehen innen rechts und waren zuerst da, einer außen links herum...). In der Kritik blendet mich der Flasher hier aber auch sehr - man wollte gar nicht mehr zum Segelflieger schauen, muss das aber natürlich für die räumliche Orientierung - gerade weil es praktisch dauern zur Kollision hätte kommen können. Einfach mit einordnen und die gleiche Winkelgeschwindigkeit zu fliegen wäre wahrscheinlich besser gewesen und funktioniert bei 99,9% aller Segelflieger auch super. Beim gemeinsamen Kreisen sehe ich den Segelflieger ohne Flasher also eher besser da die Augen nicht immer zukneifen muss und beim Geradeausflug sind wir mit der Tüte leider so träge, dass wir dem Segelflieger nicht effektiv ausweichen können, auch wenn wir luftrechtlich gleichgestellt sind. Dort wäre er nur gut um, wenn man auf Kollisionskurs ist, etwas zu rollen um auch optisch aufzufallen.

the light impuls has to be a series of flashes..not single flashes...single flashes can be not seen by blinking, and by interpretation of reflection. The idea is good, but the frequency must be adjusted.

Have a look at my last shorts video, there you can see that there are 3 flashes with a short break, then a longer break... A single flash with a long break inbetween would not help much, that's true

Eine Kamera kann die hellen Blitze nur als weißen Punkt wiedergeben. Der Effekt im menschlichen Auge ist wesentlich besser, aber natürlich auch nicht bei allen Lichverheltnissen. Bei Blauthermik z.b. reicht die Helligkeit bei allen auf dem Markt erhältlichen Haubenblitzern nicht aus. Unter einer dunklen Wolkenaufreihung hilft es aber sehr deutlich und das sind genau die gefährlichen Situationen.
