I ordered the HUD with our 2021 E350. It takes a while to get used to it, since I have already been conditioned to glance at the instrument panel all my life. One has to slightly re-focus on the HUD to read it, since my eyes are focused at infinity when driving. As noted by Leigh Young's comments below, sometimes the HUD gets in the way and can become distracting at times. The HUD images are polarized when reflected off the windshield and are blocked with polarizing sunglasses, so I can't use sunglasses while driving in bright days. It's a nice novelty and I MAY become more use to it as time progresses. The HUD may be more useful in evening/night driving, but I have not driven in the evening/night often enough to make that claim yet. -- thank you Nick for all of your tutorials!

The HUD in my 2024 c300e is pretty much the same as or 98% similar to that in the S-class. Amazing technology. Mercedes really went to town with technology add-ons in this season’s line up

I have been living with a HUD since I ordered my 2007 BMW 650i convertible and I am now saving for a GLE 63 S Coupe which is why I appreciate your very informative content. Thank you again!

I love HUD, I had it on my previous Mazda, when I was purchasing the new 2021 GLA, I told the sales I want to add HUD, he checked there’s no stock with it in Australia, he asked me twice if I really need HUD, I insisted yes!! I’m glad I waited for the custom built and I am so happy I’ve got it!

just picked up my E class in Schwaben at the factory, with a HUD and it is amazing, definitely happy i configured it on there. long drive home was very nice with it, especially at 200+km/h speeds. I aam a big fan of the navigaation indications, even if they are not augmented reality.

Nick, you are a gem, as usual. Thank you for this. 💞 The Mercedes-Benz head-up display is definitely one of my favourite features. Not only is it extremely cool, it is also extremely clear to see. No matter the backdrop, the head-up display is always clear. Not a compliment I can easily dish out. The Best or Nothing. 🙂 Well, I have this in my car, and I am using it...frequently. It is extremely helpful and cool. It is like a cool high-tech scope I can use to find and blast my unsuspecting targets...while I check out what music is playing. 😅👌

I have the “standard” version of the HUD (shown first in the video) in my ‘20 A35 and the augmented reality sat nav. I love that they’ve combined the two for the S Class, that’s awesome and I’m jealous haha

Can the hud be upgraded with software to show the augmented reality? I'm buying 2022 CLA 35 and I want hud BUT only if I can show augmented reality I know when specing the higher class you get option for AUGMENTED REALITY HUD wish nick could cover the difference between them and if it'll ever be possible to pay to upgrade older hud to show augmented reality if you have it on your sat navigation

Cool video Nick as always. I have the standard HUD in my EQC Premium Plus with driving assist. It’s great and, quite simply, it’s an essential tool.

Same here (same spec EQC). My main disappointment is the Augmented Reality display in the Centre screen - it's great, but to use it you have to take your eyes off the road. Unlike simple satnav arrows, which are easy to see at a glance, you need to give more attention to the AR display to work out what it is telling you to do. So it's useless for everyday driving, but the passenger can use it to give you added (spoken) info. However, the traffic light AR view is really good, so you are not craning your head to see a light that is not in your field of view. In summary, all HUDs need the AR adding.

I have the HUD on my C63S, overall I like it, but it does sometimes slightly obscure road markings in front of you, and I find I have to move my head around to see them. In all honestly I tend to use the dash more often than not anyway. No issues with seeing the HUD on bright days, I can even see it wearing polarized sunnies.

Great video again Nick. I had a HUD in the Jaguar I owned. Not as sophisticated as the S-Class one, but it was good for displaying speed, speed signs and SatNav details.

In Australia our last A 250 had HUD. I got very used to it. Our current C350e PHEV has it. Oh Wow! I love it. Our ordered EV A delivery date January has it ‘of course’. I looove it. Just BTW our EVA. Is being built as we speak. WooHoo! Mercedes notified us, build date is 29th 30th October. What! Takes 2 days from start to finish. Fancy that......Thank you Nick for your WONDERFUL Mercedes videos. They are absolutely entertaining and informative.

I have the A35 in Melbourne Australia with the full HUD, frankly I could never buy another car without this feature, it is brilliant, the best for me is the speed comparison between your real speed Vs speed zone, so your never left guessing the speed zone because the HUD has already used the signage, so it is difficult to go over speed limit. Provides your mapping info so ur not down with eyes of the road, a real good safety aid. 10/10 and another reason why I buy the A class 250 then stepped up to the 35 a year ago, best car I e ever owned.

I have a 2020 GLE 450 which has the HUD and the navigation with the reality overlay. Do I use it? Yes. Both HUD and augmented reality. My only thing about the augmented reality is that the blue arrows don’t begin to show until your about 100 feet or so from the corner. So if you’re going fast , by the time you see the blue arrow directing you to turn, you may have already passed the corner. But it is pretty cool.

I have my HUD setup to automatically be displayed in my GLE 450. It is a fantastic feature. I wish I had the augmented reality functionality. I have speed, fuel usuage and road speed limit displayed.

The only thing missing in my CLA 45s is the HUD. Not sure how to feel about it, but the performance seats make up for it I guess. Still looking if I can retrofit it

Just biought an A45 AMG S, took a few days to get use to the HUD but now I think its great. I dont think I can move its position on the A45, think its fixed, but can change the content.

Nice video! To tell the truth, I find there is too much information in a very small display. I also understand the virtual image distance is 10 meters which make eye refocusing necessary because we normally watch the road 30-50 meters away.

Such a pity that HUDs are not standard. I had to configure my new B-class here in Germany to get one, as it is rather rare here as well. I don't want any other car without one anymore. For safety reasons, I'd make it mandatory in all new cars. I love that it shows you which driving assistance systems are engaged right now (e.g. that lanes and cases in front have been detected), so you know what you can rely on while driving.

Hey David, no problem! No sadly I haven’t covered and try not to cover exact spec packages as these can change throughout the year so I don’t want to mislead people if it does change. So in the videos, I’ll briefly touch on the packages and mention them but won’t go into too much detail on them. If you get in touch with your local Mercedes though they’ll be able to let you know what’s on the packages etc 🤓 Sorry, Hope that helps!

I had HUD in BMW 4 series, and now I have it in Mercedes GLB. It’s more customizable in Mercedes, but it was more readable in BMW. The font in Mercedes looks too small and unfortunately it’s not possible to make it bigger. I also have augmented reality package, but it’s a pity it doesn’t show up in HUD - this would be really great.

If you have HUD, you don't need augmented reality since it provides the same function. Besides, you won't look down at the screen for the augmented reality map anyway.

Hey Darren, ooo very nice! The only adjustments that are made are in the instrument cluster with swiping the touch pad on the wheel, closest to the driver’s door. You can adjust the content, height and brightness 🤓

Hi Nick. I have my heads up turned on and have adjust brightness and position but how do I access the display content please. Up until now my navigation has never shown up on my heads up but today for some reason I could see my navigation on the heads up and love. Has there been an update or did I press something I didn’t know about. I have the glc300. 😊

Hey Laura, it depends on the year of car. Not all cars can show all types of content sadly. Some head up displays have a massive cutout across the dashboard to allow more content where as some only basic info. Head up displays usually at the very least from what I’ve seen allow Current Speed Current Speed + Speed Basic Navigation directions Revs (for AMG’s) G Force readings (for AMG’s)

Hello Nick, amazing video as always. Allow me to correct one small detail, since I've been using HUDs for more than 26 years. HUDs not only allow you to keep your head up and look in front of you while having the information needed to accomplish a task, HUD symbology is also focused to infinite, so that you do not have to adjust the focus of your eye to look at an object outside the cockpit, because your eyes are already focused to infinity. In cars, since for the normal eye the focus to infinity is from approximately 6 meters onwards, I've noticed on my GLE coupe HUD that if you are in traffic right behind another car, the HUD symbology looks out of focus because your eyes want to focus on the rear of the car in front of you, which is closer than 6 meters. Mercedes HUDs are very hi tech. Consider that in fighter jets even today HUDs are monocrome green, while Merc HUDs are in color. Definitely I miss the AR you showed on the S Class... I really hope in a software upgrade soon!

Thank you for sharing your experience. Interesting observation about the HUD being focussed at infinity. From my comments yesterday, I struggle with having to refocus constantly when driving. However, I drive mostly in urban areas with constant traffic in the "mid field" range, however, when I focus my eyes on the HUD, I would have to focus to a "near field" range. Perhaps I need a visit with my optometrist? LOL Regarding your missing the AR... I ordered the Augmented Video option, but due to the chip shortages, my Hermes module is missing and my Augmented Video (as well as my Dashcam & communications) are non-functional. Hopefully, the module will be forthcoming very soon...

Hello, I just read your comment and you are absolutely correct. I have a little more history behind automobile technology, I worked for a company called TRW for 32 years. The company was bought out by Northrop Grumman but before then, TRW purchased a company called LucasVarity. After introducing process improvements, parts became more reliable and then TRW turned its focus on technology. Creating second generation air bags and ABS, GPS, HUD, parking sensors and so on. I am so grateful for that business change that allowed new technologies within the automotive industry, even though I was laid off by Northrop Grumman after 32 years of service. TRW was considering purchasing Northrop or LucasVarity.

Hi, Nick. I bought a 2020 E300e a month ago with a broken windshield, it was cheaper and I had my hand on an original windshield from Mercedes that could fit on the e class. I did know that the car had the heads up display feature but I never tried it because the windshield was badly broken. So after installing the new windshield I started realizing that HUD would only work properly at night or on a very cloudy day. I started searching online just to find out that cars optioned with HUD come with a special windshield that has a layer of some special reflective film for the HUD to be properly visible under light. Do you have any idea on how to or where to buy that HUD reflective film only dedicated to Mercedes cars?

I would have thought that if a car has a head up display, it would have a completely different windscreen to show the display in the glass. It’s not a film that is applied to any normal windscreen I don’t think but you’d probably need to ask Mercedes on that one.

Hey Nick, I have the HUD in my 2024 GLE. The other day was the first time I drove in the Eco drive mode. I noticed some icons in the HUD. A foot on a pedal and sometimes it shows "mph" with the foot icon, and sometimes it shows a car icon next to the foot icon. Do you have any idea what those are telling me? I can't find anything in the manual or online. Thanks!

These are Eco Assist icons, they tell you when to take your foot off the accelerator. Hoping to make a video on them soon! But it’ll probably be in the summer as I’ve got a lot pencilled in!

Wow very cool! I am in the US and have the 2021 GLS suv.. I have the hud but do not have all of what you just showed. I have no augmented reality no arrows. Is there something I am missing?

Hey Delores, sadly it’s just the S-Class that has this feature with the moving arrows. It features a huge HUD area on the leather part of the dashboard (approx 3-4 times larger than the previous generation to make this effect work)

Sadly no, this sort of thing has to be pre-selected at factory. It’s got a cutout in the dashboard and possibly has a slightly different windscreen coating to allow a reflection on the dashboard.

For the augmented reality on the HUD or center panel, does it only work with the navigation map from the car itself or does it work as well with, say, Apple Car play map or waze ?

Hey Bobby, I believe this depends on the generation of the multimedia system. As of right now if it has the vertical screen of MBUX (generation 2, found on new S-Class & C-Class only) then there is the possibility that it may work on those. For everything else, no it would have to be the in built navigation system.

Hey Thibault, no sadly the augmented reality HUD is only S-Class. The unit is massive and wouldn’t fit in the C-Class dashboard to it’s size. The HUD though does show you loads of information from Navigation data, to speed limit for the road and even the speed limit!

Both are quite rare! But all depends for driving assistance package how much motorway driving you do as that’ll be where that package is most useful

Hi Nick I purchased a c200 that has the heads up display in SA and my sat navi showed up on the head up display however recently the navi no longer shows up. i can see other things but the navi doe not show up.

I’ve not used a Head up display in a C-Class before so hoping it’s similar to models that I’ve had access to and recorded videos with, if not chat with Mercedes and they can help. Most of the time the head up display only works with car’s in built Sat Nav but some newer ones also display stuff for CarPlay too. What year of Mercedes do you have and what are you using for the Sat nav? Is it the car’s one or Apple CarPlay / Android Auto / which app if you are. I’ll try and help as I said but you might need to chat to Mercedes as they’ll be able to offer tailored advice for your own car based on it’s spec etc

@@npoleary Thanks for your response. To answer your questions, my car does not have the built-in Sat Nav; however, I use Andriod Auto to access the Maps via Google Maps. What made me ask this question was that my car displayed the sat nav on the heads-up display yesterday. And I used it to navigate from my place to my destination.,. With all the details appearing on the head-up display, this functionality disappeared after switching off the engine and returning to the car. I tried all I could and enquired telephonically via Merc agent - they also could not assist (admitting that they are not all clued up with the new Mbux system). I stumbled across your videos. My car is a 2022 year model. For context, I live in CT, South Africa.

Ah this is a very common question! Basically and in a nutshell it only works in certain seating positions. Sadly for me being 6ft 2” it won’t work for me because I’m too tall. Easy Entry/Exit will only work if you are shorter in height and need the seat to move back further away from the wheel in order to get out.

Nick……. I’m sat in an EQE courtesy car. I’ve resorted to viewing videos to find out how to adjust the HUD for my viewing height. I still can’t find it. Head in hands, I’ll just have to look at the speedo instead.

Been a while since I featured an EQE on my channel but I’m pretty sure you press the home button and swipe up and then all the way to the right. I’ve got a Mercedes from Mercedes Press office at the moment so the functions should be the same (sadly not an EQE though)

⁠@@npolearyhi Nick, I’ve just got home! Thank you for the advice, much appreciated and I found it in the end, the on line manual kept referring to the button on the left side of the steering wheel. But it was the right and I think I just got lucky. So that’s a perfect piece of safety kit and got the most use out of the Spaceship Enterprise options on the screens. The rest mmmmmmmm not convinced. Most importantly a shout out to MB Eastbourne for servicing and MOT’ing the trusty GLA45 today and the supply of the EQE courtesy car. Great service is everything and they deliver to me in spades. Otherwise I’d be straight down to MB Poole 👍🏻👍🏻

Ah awesome! Yes manuals are always printed for left hand drive so if the steering wheel’s on the other side you have to do a swap! Oh awesome! That’s good! Well you can take your car anywhere for servicing you don’t have go to the place where I bought mine 😂 That’ll be a long road trip!

Hi Nick, thanks for this video. I own a AMG GLE 53 with augmented reality but I do not see that on the HUD or is augmented reality is only available for S-Class ? Thanks

No worries! Glad you enjoyed it! Yes that’s right the Augmented Reality HUD is massive in the S-Class and is a new feature only launched in this car

@@npoleary thanks for the quick response and clarification. Can I also ask another question, the rear seat always gets warm air, I have set the cabin temp to 17 deg. Is there a specific setting for the rare of the car.

No worries, on your climate control switches, if you press MENU, then you may have a “2nd Row Seats Option” which allows you to change the rear separately to the front. That does depend on your specification though as not all GLE’s have that feature.

Ah okay then it’ll just be the driver and passenger controls on the Climate Control Switches. If it’s not working as expected though, if you get in touch with your local Mercedes, they should be able to take a look 🤓

Some newer models I’ve noticed have pre set themes which you can swipe between. But not choose each individual element. Same concept I guess as the instrument cluster

I highly doubt it, it’s requires a massive cutout of the dashboard which you have to select at factory when building a car. Plus out all of the manufacturers I’ve reviewed none of them will ever retrofit anything to a car sadly.

Hi Nick I have a 2022 EQS 450+ with Augmented Reality in addition to Heads Up Display. For unknown reason(s) I don't get Augment Reality on my Heads Up but it does show on my center console. Why is this happening?

Hey Neil, ooo very nice! I haven’t used a Head Up Display on the EQS before but I thought I remember reading somewhere that Augmented Reality on the Head-Up Display is only for models with a Hyperscreen. It requires a massive cutout (3x the size of a normal head-up display) to make the augmented part work on the HUD.

I have a 21 model E400d AMG Line Night Edition Prem + not even an option🤔 nearly a deal breaker with The 540i along with the full screen CarPlay but the £200 a month saving swung it for the Mercedes……!

Hey Rs S, it’s a self levelling system so it’ll automatically level itself when you switch on each day 🤓 If you think something’s wrong though, if you get in touch with your local Mercedes I’m sure they could take a look!

I have a 2020 E-class (GLE450) and the augmented reality is nowhere near as advanced as what I'm seeing on this '21 S-class. For example the "pointers" don't adjust in size to give the driver perception of where to turn (instead a single arrow fades into view as you approach the road and if the road isn't a 90-degree turn it's difficult to detect since it's parallel with the road you're turning on to, ie. exit ramps). Don't get me wrong I like the heads-up display on my vehicle but it's unfortunate our one year old HUD software can't be upgraded.

Hey Anthony, it’s not just the software though! I mentioned in the video the S-Class has additional hardware so it’s only unique to that model. The size of the head up display unit is about 3-4 times larger than the previous version. It’s really cool but S-Class tech is always in a league of it’s own!

Hey Jagjit, best thing to do to know for sure is if you get in contact with your local Mercedes, they’ll be able to let you know. In the UK most Head Up Displays are primarily found in Mercedes-AMG’s so like a GLC 63 S etc but this can vary round the world.

Sadly no Rylan haven’t seen HUD on a CLA before but it does vary round the world so depending on where you live, get in touch with your local Mercedes and they’ll be able to answer that for you 🤓 In the UK, HUD’s are usually found on selected AMG’s and high end C-Class’s, GLC’s etc

Anyone else a bit peeved that the HUD appears to be tilted slightly, not level. Seems tilted to match the dashboard slant but on the left hand side for LHD users making it more acute angle for UK users

You’ll have to check, depends if you customised it at factory to have it or if you selected it when you bought it. If you’re not sure, they’ll be a big hole in the dashboard behind the steering wheel. Or if you’re still not sure just contact Mercedes directly and they can help 🤓

I highly doubt it It requires a cut out in the dashboard, most likely a different windscreen and of course all of the software. So probably easier to find a car with it already fitted. Mercedes dealers don’t retrofit items anyway so finding someone who would undertake that task would be very difficult!

Disappointed it wasn’t available on my Mercedes A220 Premium Plus AMG Line Saloon. Although it was available in other Countries. The UK seems to be the poor relation when choosing wheels, interior colours etc. Only one Wheel choice one Interior Colour no HUD. 👎🙁

Yes I have it in my BMW and use it all the time, but I cannot find a GLE or E class with it and yet it is in the BMW 520 since 2016? come on Merc lets get it in every model. That is why I change to BMW last year. I find it most convenient and a safety enhancement to driving.

Yeah a head up display would be cool to have in every model. On the cars I’ve reviewed and tested etc it’s an awesome feature to have!
