There is a lot of scenes not being adapted into the anime from the manga. In the manga we got a lot of information not only for Atsushi's past in the orphanage (like the fact that he once get punished with a nail on his foot) but also the Headmaster's past. The Headmaster used to be an orphan too in the time of war. His childhood was even worse than Atsushi, and after he grow up, he and his friends got sent into that war with only him being the sole survivor. After that he became the Headmaster of the orphanage. He believe that an abusive and harsh childhood is the only key to survive the outside world, hence why he is so harsh and abusive to those children, especially Atsushi. Because he genuinely believe it is the right and only way. A circle of abusive keep spinning. Luckily Atsushi manage to break away from that circle. Yes, he is horrible and should never been forgiven, but with that backstory it makes us understand much more WHY he did what he did.

In the Manga is shows that the Headmaster was the Only one from his friends who survived as Child because of a War and he make herself as the Target of atsushis hate and made that war his reason to live. In the Manga the one who gives the Information was Akutagawa, because the Headmaster would sell a Gun to buy a bunch of Flowers, and the person was one of Akutagawas subordinates. Akutagawa said even to atsushi "my mentor ist dazai and your is the person from the Foto. i wouldn't fight you, because today is the Death of you mentor." And later I'd shows atsushi hiding on a tree on the funeral of the Headmaster. The episode was good, but it hat cut some responds to little questions.

Thank you for your summary but personally (I don't know if it is because I am dumb but) I can't really understand what you tried to summarise in the first sentence... but I guess this is a sign for me to read the manga thoroughly because I am quite confused about what parts of the light novels have been tweaked to be part of the anime, what stuff has been properly adapted from the manga and the world building of certain stuff like Rimbaud and Verlaine and the timeline of Chuuya and Dazai between the ages of 15 to 16... my mind is generally REALLY confused about what is aligned and conveys the original story and what does not... For myself, I have read through all the light novels and watched every episode of BSD... I just have not read the manga. I dislike some of the adaptations of the light novel here and there but because I didn't read the manga the timeline and the stories don't flow as well in my head... Sorry for the long comment! In general I am just one very confused, bsd addict individual.... lol

I would cry too, If I was on atsushi's place but not because the headmaster is dead but because of the fact that the headmaster didn't have the chance to apologize and explain the reason why he did every bad thing he had done to atsushi.

The manga goes so much deeper into the way Atsushi was treated by the Headmaster, but the idea of the 'abusive father' being killed and Atsushi still being sad or upset about it just really shows some of the more complicated and intricate psychology that goes on in a person's mind. Like if I were in Atsushi's place I'd probably be feeling that same way and wanting to cry too. Can't wait for the next few reactions!

Atsushi is shown to be very empathetic character and often acting irrationally based on his emotions rather than in a calm and logical way. So it's understandable that he is an emotional wreck right now and feels conflicted. There is no way the headmaster's actions were justified and there is absolutely no need to forgive him for what he did to Atsushi. But as mentioned here in the comment section, the headmaster also had a traumatic backstory and if any story is well written, there are always reasons and somewhat logic for the "antagonist's" actions. And I do believe that in some twisted way the headmaster believed that what he did was necessary, maybe due to his own backstory this was the only way he knew, someone who was raised by pain saw that the pain is necessary for someone to become strong, although continuing to inflict pain was wrong and the headmaster knew it, but in the given circumstances he didn't know what else to do or how to do it. It's important to remember what was done to Atsushi in the past, the Dead Apple movie. He was experimented on and *did* kill someone, all those memories he had locked away (the door symbolism in Atsushi's memories) and the one person he saw guarding the door was the headmaster. The headmaster tried to protect Atsushi and prevent him from remembering what he had done, kept the secret about Atsushi's ability and tried (successfully) to make Atsushi absolutely despise and hate him instead of Atsushi ending up hating himself. He believed that it's better for Atsushi for not knowing about the tiger and about that he, a child, did indeed end up killing someone in his tiger form. He was a father figure, not a good one, but a father figure nonetheless

I am one of the people who does not agree with what Dazai said to Atsushi, but I am also someone who, without knowing what Dazai has been through, I simply cannot judge his way of thinking. We have been shown that he is someone who has difficulties to understand or feel what the rest because he himself does not feel human (you know, his power is called "No Longer Human" so it makes sense) so if we add everything he has lived, which in fact we don't know, I can't judge him at all. The only thing I can say is that he simply did what he could to comfort Atsushi.

I think bungo stray dogs is a great example of how abuse cn afect a person and like atsushi and Akutagawa are a great example of it. But atsushi was hurt so now he tries to prevent others from being hurt while akutagawa was hurt so now he hurts others as thats how he was taught. Same situation, different people and outcomes.

[spoilers?] yh, i still can't rlly agree w dazai for this one. i understand that he wanted to comfort atsushi in his own way, but honestly, telling atsushi that his abuser was his 'father figure' and that it's okay for him to cry for him just wasn't it.. i felt like it just minimized atsushi's abuse/feelings from something complex and painful into something that's supposed to be 'normal'. idk but if it were me, that would've just confused me even more lol. i am glad though that akutagawa becomes a real support for him as someone who understands atsuhi and his abusive past, and tries to help him overcome that :'))

I don't know how to explain it to anyone but I definitly understand why Dazai said that. If you would look back on how things were, yeah that man did horrible things to a kid; verbal and physical abuse. But even how sh!tty an adult is, the child would still unconsiously see them as a parental figure. You know the abusive parents from news and articles? The kids' unconsious sees them as parental figure, a horrible one at that. And that shaped the kid who they are today. By the way, I can't speak for everyone. I am stating this from personal experience; my biological father called me lost cause (and other variations), told me I should have just d!ed--that he should've just yeeted me out of life LMAO! I was 4. That gave me trauma and lost all childhood memories, except the bad memories... my brain even tries to sh!t on me. I've already moved on, it been like... 18 years? That's just me trying to explain why I agree with Dazai... psychologically

@@lumin4079 i completely agree to what you're saying, and i understand why dazai just is the way that he is. i mean,, having been constantly surrounded by death and violence, it makes sense that dazai became so accustomed to its nature. however, i did find it unfortunate for him to be the one to comfort atsushi in those first moments - even if his intentions were only kind, i don't think that dazai was someone who could fully relate to atsushi,, as dazai somewhat embraced his trauma, atsushi has been running away from his, and hasn't yet come to terms with it. - but don't get me wrong,, i love that dazai wanted to be there for atsushi, and even cared enough to give him his advice. i just think that atsushi still needed some time to grasp what he felt for himself, so that he wouldn't be so conflicted or feel cursed for it later. :c (idk but yeah... i hope that made sense lol) (also, i am truly sorry to hear abt the kind of things that you had to go through in your life. - you didn't deserve that. but i've also experienced v similar things as well, so i understand how that can feel or how it can effect the way that you live. yh idk but i hope ur okay now lol :))

I honestly don't think it's a question about agreeing or not? I mean, even if an adult is horrible, you can't help but see them as your parental figure, especially if that's all you've ever known. Atsushi has only known the headmaster and that man was the closest thing to a father Atsushi had in a place like the orphanage. And not everyone cries at the death of their parents, but most do. Even if the parental figures in question were horrible. The reason why though may depend. Sometimes it's genuine affection - as fucked up as it is, you're so used to seeing them as parent that you naturally can't help but feel sad at their death - but sometimes it's also the feeling of not getting closure or something. It's complex. I dunno, I think Dazai's right. Many people tend to cry when their father dies. Some people celebrate but that seldom happens, to my knowledge. Now whether you think it's the right thing to say is another matter entirely😅 but I don't think it's bad. It's confusing but also validating? You can cry for the person who hurt you so much in the past. Because he was your father figure. A god awful one, but one nonetheless, and it doesn't make your feelings of sadness any less present. Crying for him is normal. That's more like Dazai's message, I think. He isn't excusing anything nor minimizing anything. It makes Atsushi's even more complex and painful in fact. Hating your abuser with every fiber of your being yet crying at their death is a very real thing, and you can either feel angry and horrified at yourself for not being sad, or feel sad and then angry at yourself for being sad. It's very real and I think Atsushi needed to hear that. Maybe it's not ideal or perfect but not bad per se.

as usual, totally love ur insights and how u can actually understand things from bsd. Also gotta thank these people in the comments coz when I read a manga after an anime, I usually start from where they last left off (in this case, after s3). And at a degree, u just gotta agree with all of their points. How it explains the headmaster's actions, yet it still doesn't make it right. How they agree and disagree with dazai's comment abt him being his father figure. but on top of it all....just gotta love how he also a AtushixLucy shipper xD😌 HAHAHAHA

SPOILERS FOR THIS REACTION: Honestly i still hate the headmaster. And i feel like this is one of the times dazai is wrong. I dont think atsushi seen him as a father figure, but someone who shaped him as a person, and since one of the only people dazai had like that was mori, to him that might be what a father figure is, when in reality its not. I feel akutugawa gives atsushi much better advice later on, and sympathizes better. Dazai isnt someone who cries, and he did his best to answer atsushi, despite not understanding. I dont know if i explained this well sorry.

I agree with you there. As much as they denied it, I believed that Akutagawa at Atsushi really relates to each other judging from their past.

Nah, in my opinion, the headmaster IS his father figure. A horrible one, but still a father figure nonetheless. He is probably the only adult male that was the closest to Atsushi when he was a child. Atsushi may be hate and fear him, but he also can't help but seeing him as his own father.

I have a problem with the anime filtering the severe abuse that Atsushi experienced in the orphanage. Boy had to hammer a nail on his own foot ffs.
