This video started being filmed almost a year ago! Waiting for parts and bad weather and life got in the way but here is part 1, starting the teardown of this battered headshok.

I like how you did not edit out all of the things that can go wrong or failed attempts to resolve parts. I have a feeling that I will be going through similar situations with mine. Thank you . I will be looking for your other videos.👍

Which Cannondale are you working on? Lots of different models use the same headshoks.

@@gravelproof probably the same one. A Jekyll 900 which is 00/01 with the float RC rear & a headshock up front

@@dennishayes1505 ok this doesn't belong to any bike in particular. I have a rather large collection of headshoks that need work or do work on them for other people, I believe this model was used on various different framesets in the late 90s.

@@gravelproof thank you . Ihave two Cannondale Jekyll 700 bikes , and there is no one in my conntry who knows how to fix them , and when Iwatched your channel , I learned and repaired them myself 💚💚💚💚💚🙏

If this Headshok had been an "air" fork, there would have been a schrader valve on the stereer tube near where it goes into the top of the fork.

Only the delta headshoks from the early 90s had the air valve at the top. Most headshoks have the inflator under the crown, meaning you need to remove the wheel to inflate. Let me know if you would like me to post reference images for you

@@gravelproof Yes, I know, but those delta shocks went until the late 90's as well. I was a Cannondale dealer at the time, and I remember selling a few.

And yet you didn’t see any of the Headshok models like Ultra, Super, Fatty, Fatty SL, Super Fatty D etc that had the inflators underneath?

Good luck! The elastomer replacement is straightforward as long as you have the right tool.

Great video! i bought a cannondale f1000 and im facing the same problem with the broken valve stem.. im about to get a new air cartridge to replace it, but i dont know if i should remove the air cylinder from the bottom as you do in this video or better through the top as in part 2 video

Hmm well it’s good to clean things out properly and remove the c clip but if everything is nice and clean the just sliding it out of the top end is easier! By the way I did manage to drill and tap a new valve body onto a corroded cylinder end.. useful at a pinch, but it does extend down further

Nice video. Is there anyway to convert the full spring headshok to air?

Yes for most headshoks you can swap out the damper and coil setup with an air / oil setup.. you just need the right travel length, and to remove the bottom spring perch.

Why does no one strip the damper and replace the lip seals. That is the main thing that goes wrong with the ultra and the only reason the lockout stops working oil the oil leaks out. Also everyone does these what amounts to an oil change in the style of a long winded university lecture.

I didn’t have time to cover all parts of a Headshok rebuild in one video.. i think I commented in this video that I hadn’t covered that. I have another video where I tear down the damper into its constituent parts and have another one to come out where I build it all back up. It just takes time to film that stuff with everything else going on. Appreciate your patience..

I just found your channel and the two vids I've seen so far are the most informative I've seen so far. I have a 2001 Jekyll with a super fatty fork on it. I'm trying to find the correct castle tool for it but don't know much about them. Stuff that old is becoming very hard to get info on. Any help would be appreciated.

So the castle tool that I use for most of the headshoks is KH031 which works for all of the oil dampers I have taken out so far.. and that would the one you would want.. the thing is it’s hard to find these days.. there is a Leonardi one but can’t be sure which model it is. Or you could check out www.improvepart.com/ they have various tools I believe they have a headshok tool.. I bought a lefty tool from them. (The DLr lefty needs a two part tool which is unobtanium otherwise)

@@gravelproof Thanks for the reply. I looked multiple places online and everybody is out of stock except the link you sent. Not sure about the company unless someone has used them before. I did find some 3D printed files that I forward to a friend to see if it can be printed. Looking forward to more of you vids.

Yes I’ve purchased parts from them before.. look up RocFu.. he’s been involved with the vintage Cannondale community for a long time. I have been testing out various tools of his and even new bearings he has been making.
