HEALING VOICES is a feature-length documentary examining experiences commonly labeled as 'psychosis' or 'mental illness' in society, and a critical look at America's broken mental health care system.

MEDICATING NORMAL follows the journeys of a newly married couple, a female combat veteran, a waitress, and a teenager - whose doctors prescribed psychiatric drugs to help with stress, mild depression, sleeplessness, focus, and trauma. Our subjects struggle with serious physical and mental side-effects which resulted from taking the drugs as prescribed. During the course of the film, prominent psychiatrists and scientific experts explain how it came to pass that - shockingly - one in five Americans are now taking these drugs daily. And they support and reinforce the fact that debilitating side-effects including addiction are common, and yet are not commonly acknowledged. It is the untold story of the disastrous consequences that can occur when profit-driven medicine intersects with human beings in distress.
This community discussion and Q&A focused on film as a vehicle for activsim in the age of a pandemic featuring:
Oryx Cohen, survivor, speaker, filmmaker, subject of the film, Healing Voices
PJ Moynihan, Founder and CEO of Digital Eyes Film Productions and Director/Producer of Healing Voices
Lynn Cunningham, co-director/co-producer of Medicating Normal
Angela Peacock, MSW, former Army Sergeant, subject of the film, Medicating
Normal
The discussion was moderated by Nicole Lamberson, PA of the Medicating Normal Outreach Team.

Thanks so much for all the work you do! Prescribed Klonopin (33 years), Effexor XR (18 years) and Topamax (13 years). We ask for help and are turned away...... These videos keep me sane. My older sister (retired nurse) thinks this is all nuts!!! Because I look so normal, it's hard for people to believe my central nervous system in is constant flux. I'm going into 4 years since my last dose of Klonopin and healing takes so much time. The system must change - too many lives are at risk. Janet

People who are suffering from mental illness do not have the capacity to educate themselves on their issues. These people are barely functioning. Even if you are "on top of your game" there is too much information out there leaving the person who is suffering more confused. Like with a broken leg, a person suffering from a mental illness needs a trusted professional they can turn to for advice & treatment. I know mental illnesses are infinitely more complex than a broken leg, but nonetheless the need to turn to someone for proper help is still the same.

We need family, friends, and community members to help MORE than "professionals."

@@MedicatingNormal I respectfully disagree. All ANYONE wants is to find a cure or satisfactory treatment for their relentless suffering. Family, frends, & community are vitally important & offer much needed support, but the ultimate goal is not to live a life "coping" but instead live a life of contentment, happiness & relative success. I've been coping all my life & I HATE IT! I want to "LIVE" a few years before I take my last breath

@@MedicatingNormal Family, friends & community are important, but Ultimately we are looking for RELIEF or a CURE!
