It is interesting to hear that the consumption of tea is correlated with lower stroke risk, lower blood pressure and overall cardio vascular health, as well as a multitude of other desirable health effects. However, I would be very interested in an explanation of the actual chemical processes which occur in the body directly as a result of the consumption of tea which bring about the aforementioned health benefits. A deep dive, if you will, into the reasons why tea is good for you

Interesting to hear your comment about the process of brewing the tea. I've said this to people as well, that just the process of preparing it calms me. I'm a homeschool mom and things can be loud and chaotic and my kids know to not interrupt until Mommy is done making her tea. Just that short step away gives me a moment to regroup on rough days! Then there's the joy of the tea itself, too. :-)

A therapist friend has said that from the brain science perspective, experiencing a change of temperature of some kind helps with emotional self-regulation. Tea falls in that category! I guess hot chocolate does that, too, but I prefer the tea anyway. So much more variety! And the tastes linger. With that - I'm going to go warm-up my cup!

I would add that the amount of sugar you add to your tea can quickly negate most of those benefits. I like my tea double strong, and it used to take about 1/4 cup (60 ml) of honey per 16-oz (470 ml) of tea to bring it up to the sweetness I liked. After gaining about 15 lbs and being told by my doctor I was pre-diabetic, I decided to leave out the honey entirely. Over a half year, I lost those 15 lbs, with no other efforts, and have much more consistent energy levels and overall well being. And I still enjoy that little energizing high that he describes.

We would like to hear you analyze the meta data and tell us about your opinions and experiences as a Chinese Herb specialist. Even with all the data out there (we’ve all heard it) there still seems to be a shroud of mystery and doubt for people. Personally, I've done over 3 grams of l-theanine powder. (compare that to about 25 mg in a cup, of course depending on the type, shade grown teas like gyokuro & matcha tend to be higher) And yes, I know it's just theanine, when you dissolve it - it's an amino acid closely related to glutamate, so highly soluble in water -, it tastes savory with a kind of sweet hint, it's such a recognizable taste that when you've tasted pure theanine (the d-isomer is barely studied or used, and my package clearly states l-theanine, the one that also occurs in tea), you'll recognize it near immediately in certain Japanese teas. But to say it alters mood much, I don't know. It can, at times, take away some load of physical nervousness. And when you take very high amounts (nowhere near achievable by drinking tea, and if you were, you'd be experiencing much of caffeines side effects instead, the optimal ratio is about 1:2 caffeine: l-theanine; the teas highest in l-theanine barely get to a 2:1 and occassionally near a 1:1 ratio) you might experience some warm feelings in your limbs or hands at certain times. And a very high dose has caused some more intense spatial awareness/HD vision for me once. (spacing like on psychedelics/cannabinoids but less pronounced) But better mood, maybe slightly? Or maybe it's just different for me in comparison to other people? I can only suggest you'll try it out for yourself. Most people who take it for anxiety related relief, take high doses, far beyond those by drinking plain tea. On the standard dose of 200 mg I barely notice anything, or usually like just plain nothing. It's also been studied in the context with caffeine, so theanine on its own might have less effects. And with the absurdly small amounts occurring naturally in tea, I seriosuly have my doubts on its *possible* effectiveness. Some anecdotal reports also see it being combined with other stimulants & eugeroics (like modafinil), slightly 'taking the edge off', toning down some negative effects and possible bodyload. But of course there's much more to tea, in terms of compounds, then just caffeine and l-theanine though. Also interesting to note is that depending on the meditative practise one does. The brainwave activity differs. Apparently transcendental meditation (TM) is said to induce more alpha wave activity. (TM meditation also is done with closed eyes, which in itself induces more alpha braiwave activity) While say, Tibetan monks, in everyday living (so not during literal meditation), appear to have increased gamma wave activity. (the highest frequencies) Lavender in some studies - yes I love lavender as you can tell - also induces more alpha wave activity, but again, I have my doubts to what extent it increases 'mindfulness'. www.researchgate.net/publication/225051306_The_Effects_of_Lavender_Oil_Inhalation_on_Emotional_States_Autonomic_Nervous_System_and_Brain_Electrical_Activity Anyway, tea has been the most addictive drug for me. I have a love-hate relationship with tea. It has usually more negative effects on my health, and especially my mood & life(style), then positive. Done many kinds of psychoactive substances, herbs, etc. Even drunk coffee, energy drinks & snorted caffeine powder at certain points. Yet, tea has been the only substance I couldn't lay down for good. (I was able to take breaks for weeks, but quitting for the rest of my life, no way... Now it seems near impossible to lay it down for any more then a couple of days.) I don't want to end up like those people who are completely irritable, unspeakable to and unfunctionable before they've had their morning cup of coffee or tea. I don't want my literal day to depend on a substance, I don't care if it's 'natural' & has health benefits in moderation. (that's a fallacy btw, just because something is natural doesn't mean it's necessary good; some of the most toxic compounds readily occur in nature, in fact, many of teas compounds are there to protect itself and actually *deter* animals that might eat it) Beans & lentils are healthy, but I don't crave them like I do with tea. When I go a day, or days, without legumes; I won't see a crash in my (already low) mood and a complete lack of energy, drive, motivation, etc. Interestingly enough though, there are many Camellia species that are also used to make tea, going through similar or even exactly the same processes as regular Camellia sinensis. Many Camellias also contain caffeine (and also theanine apparently), but many others - there are many Camellia species & also hybrids, so much that the genus even has several subgenus categories! - like this Camellia crassicolumna, native to Guizhou & Yunnan, made into a pu'er tea. It contains no caffeine at all because that specific species of Camellia does not synthesize caffeine. (I don't know about other xanthines, like theobromine though.) verdanttea.com/2020-wild-crassicolumna-sheng-puer-cake (I'm not affiliated with this vendor or anything, haven't even bought from them yet.) I haven't tried it yet, but the flavour/aroma profile seems very promising! You'd probably even be able to trick Don into believing it's a regular sinensis. But beware, the irritable mood and caffeine withdrawal headaches are waiting for you, if you'll start drinking this one solely.

Interesting to note. During the latter end of an AL-LAD trip I drank some teas. I did it slightly right after the - very short - peak, as I initially didn't want to combine drugs. Lysergamides are already kind of stimulating in their own manner, vasoconstrictive and they increase blood pressure & heart rate, no need to go add some hefty caffeine on top of that. Cannabis can also be a bad idea, not so much physically, but mentally when it comes to psychosis, delusions, anxiety, paranoia, etc. As cannabis itself is psychedelic, it can quite heavily increase that of other compounds by modulating 5-HT2a receptor activity. My opinion is that regular cannabis consumption on its own is not a good idea either, especially if you smoke it (lungs), are very young or have many difficulties in life. But so for other things as well of course. But anyway, I did drink tea, because I'm addicted to caffeine I guess, and very interested in doing a gong fu session while tripping. At first, like the first 15 to 30 minutes - but don't take my word for it - I felt an increased bodyload, with my veins showing. -> usually a sign that it's either warm in the room, or that I've taken something that increased blood pressure &/or heart rate. When I do get it, it's usually after drinking tea. (as I don't consume other caffeine containing beverages anymore) But a few minutes after it quite rapidly declined. It wasn't too uncomfortable, but also not asked for. Not a good combination physically wise, as to be expected from a stimulant. Tea does appear to alter blood pressure in different ways, with so many compounds in it. So I guess it's mostly the caffeine who's effects appeared the most rapidly, and then others. To note extra, the other xanthine also commonly measured in tea (and highly concentrated in chocolate), theobromine, actually dilates blood vessels, and is capable of even slightly lowering blood pressure in certain ways it appears; with less central nervous system activity as caffeine, but it does increase heart rate. But has a longer half life and takes longer to 'kick in' as caffeine does. Being not water soluble like caffeine. (I've tried pure theobromine, indeed, you'll have to chug the chunks of powder.) www.ahajournals.org/doi/pdf/10.1161/hypertensionaha.110.158139 * AL-LAD is a lysergamide similar to LSD, said to be less introspective, but also less anxiety inducing and shorter in durration; I personally noticed barely none fractals or other geometry, and barely any closed eye visuals, no real synaesthesia, just a goofy, funky, cartoonesk feeling with everything flowing and objects moving/dancing/drifting; meditating while on it was not that interesting. Which in a sense would be a good thing as meditation isn't about being interesting, but just being. But not so interesting in the sense that it was hard to remain attention, probably also to do with the fact there is only so much you can do in a couple of hours, so a wandering mind. Even if time feels to slow down. (which was hardly the case though, in comparison to other experiences)

And being a big tea head myself and a massive science nerd. I have done a lot of research on the subject of tea health and found that yes there are health benefits. However, I found that this can be a very slippery slope going from hard proven science to meta science to just plain old which doctoring. And that's were it can become dangerous. I've been drinking tea for quite a while, but recently I have started having acid reflux, and my doctor told me to severely limit my tea intake, which I'll admit was a good bit a day, but he said drinking hot liquids, specifically tea, causes esophageal cancer because of the combination of hot liquids and tannins in tea. He says lots of people in Asian countries that drink loads of hot tea a day usually have higher risk of this cancer. I'm not saying my doctor is wrong, I would just like some insight into this claim. Edit: yes more health and tea vids lol.

I guess good things are good until you have too much of them. I have grown numb to things that cause/contribute to cancer (e.g. sugar, meat, the sun, etc.). If tea ends up being the thing that gives me cancer, then I think I lucked out. ( I speak only for myself. Not speaking for all tea drinkers, of course!)

Try apple cider vinegar. I do capsules for my acid reflux. Sounds strange as it's acidic, but many people claim it helps because to little acid can be mistaken for to much as it strangely has the same affects. I would try eating a decent snack with two apple cider vinegar capsules as soon as the acid reflux starts from tea. Reason I say to take during is to see if it actually makes it go away. I would try it a couple times. If it does nothing or makes it temporarily flare up then it's not for you, but if it gets better you may be like me. Something to look into. It has saved me life as I was headed to a bad place and was at risk for cancer and not acid reflux is easily manigible.

Acids may taste sour but are broken down by the body into their individual parts that are not acidic and have a different effect on the body than acids. E.g. protein are amino acids that also have an acidic effect in the body and therefore there is more acid in the stomach that can rise. Therefore, do not eat too many foods that are high in protein if you are sensitive to them. Otherwise, the good old sodium bicarbonate also helps to reduce the acidity in the stomach, just take a small amount like dissolve the tip of a knife in a glass of water.

Well just dont fully boil the water then. Get a kettle with temperature presets this way you can make tea with cooler water without burning your esophagus.

I do wonder about the tannin in tea. I don't know how much this varies from tea to tea. I know some studies say tannin is good for you but I'm guessing from seeing its raw affect on human skin and leather it must be toughening up internal tissue but that could be bad too as it might decrease absorbency of minerals and reduce elasticity of some vessels and gut tissue.

Are all types of teas good for health or only some types of teas? Can I get loose leaf tea in my local grocery store or where would I be able to get loose leaf tea? Are there any guides as to how to brew loose leaf tea?

Very interesting,a question on the subject, what do you refer as cup by size? cause 3 cups a day by US measure is ~700ml,it's heck a lot of brewing :) By the way,you are solely responsible for me drinking loose leaf tea only :)
