My Apple Watch detected AFib with out me feeling it. I later developed a heart flutter. I had an ablation. I exercise everyday and use the activity app. This 65 y/o guy finds my Apple Watch a helpful tool in staying healthy.

Yea my 75yo mom had her watch identify afib and she had to also have an ablation. She’s now on the correct meds and the afib notifications stopped/slowed. In these instances, I’m gonna say the Apple Watch allowed more time and years with my mom.

You never hear about all the disasters we avert because they are averted. 100+ million devices will have at least a couple issues, but when compared to benefits, they are statistically outweighed. Is someone else mistakenly paying 1000's of dollars in unnecessary diagnosis worth saving your life?

My mom had serious heart problems and the doctor didn’t believe her, because it never occurred during the visit to the doctor. I caught her an Apple Watch, so she could prove, that her heart was doing weird stuff with the ecg. It worked. She got treated and is fine now. She needed the watch, because her heart happened not to act up when she had a medical monitor for like two weeks. The watch she could wear all the time and record when she was feeling weird. So yea: not necessary for everyone, but helpful for some.

Watches like these give you visual insights into your daily routine performances. I’m glad my watch allows to track my bpm, stand hours and all the other stuff so *I* don’t have to.
@idontgetnotifiedaboutrepli2332
Just got a S7 from eBay that I was thinking about returning. But the sleep insight it gives me made me change my mind about how I sleep and how I have to sleep. Easy access to my BPM on some watchfaces or in the app allow me to understand that I do have trouble with cardio fitness, something the watch tracks in the health app as well. He’s right that the watch doesn’t really tell you much you shouldn’t already know, but it makes you know them. Opening the health app a week after I got the watch I was stunned at how terrible my fitness is in some regards. I’m keeping it.

4:04 This is why hypochondriacs should not have the Apple Watch or any kind of health watch. Even if you are borderline, it makes you check every little thing that you never cared to check before and it can mess with you.

I never saw the Apple Watch as a health dependent device. More so a health awareness and peace of mind. Think of it like a friend who starts to notice something out of place you don’t notice and recommends to seek medical attention.

I think that fitness watches are a great tool for establishing a baseline for your health. You can definitely point at specific times and say, that is not normal for me, I should go see a doctor.

I am so thankful for my Apple Watch! I have MS, Dysautonomia,chronic migraine,PCOS and now multiple blood clots in my lungs. My watch not only helps me catch new or worsening problems but it’s also a comfort to be able to check my numbers but I know if I collapse when I’m alone it will call for help, and when EMTs or stranger try to help me they can access all of my health information so I can be treated properly.

I honestly just love the gamification of exercise, because I genuinely hate exercise, but I will get competitive with those rings and getting my pretty firework at the end of the day. That’s it. The mindfulness and medication reminders are also pretty useful, but nothing I couldn’t improvise on if needed. My main reason for owning the thing is that it does get me to the gym, make the gym more interesting, by providing pretty metrics, and last but not least, gives me a button to brag to my friends with, who will then tell me I’m awesome (or worse - ask me, where my posts are/have been!). It works for me and I’m willing to pay a lot for those health benefits brought on by regular exercise.

I use a simple watch that monitors my steps, helps me watch my sleep, and the that records that info also has it where I can log my BP and BS. So each doctor visit, we can go over the info, including my bloodwork and make any treatment adjustments. I have a few ailments, and early on, tech became a valuable tool. When the Pandemic hit, our phones being able to monitor oxygen was amazing, as we were isolated at home, and our doctor would check in remotely and would have us do the temp and oxygen. I still see a lot of room for improvement, and agree with Dr. Mike on a lot of stuff, but I have found some uses for my watch that have been beneficial.

I use a cheap $50 fitness tracker. It does all the things I want. Tracks steps, sleeping, and shows me my messages. Plus it has a 5 day battery.
@anthonyscott5134
@anthonyscott5134 Год назад
That’s great that for your specific situation that is all you need or desire. Some of us can look beyond our own use case though. As for the 5 day battery. I always laugh at people who throw that out. Let’s see, does your tracker serve as a watch, a calendar, a phone, email, messages…? I bet not. Do you think all that functionality shouldn’t drain a battery? These are two entirely different levels of usability.

@Dornavver
@Dornavver Год назад
I don't see the value in fitness optimizations. I see the value as a tracking device. A lot of people, especially tech guys like engineers for example really love tracking their training progress. Seeing the numbers getting better provides some extra motivation.
@ericfielding2540
@ericfielding2540 Год назад
Interesting perspective but nobody knows everything, including doctors who think they do. There are probably a lot of people who expect their smart device to do everything for them. I agree that the devices are more motivation to start an exercise program than to maintain it, so people get disillusioned.

Some of this doctors comments seem overly generalized - ignoring the tentative approach Apple takes with health. That, along with the enormous effort and expense Apples has gone to when partnering with reputable medical institutions to validate the data collected by the Apple Watch. It would have been nice to hear this doctor acknowledge the difference between fitness tracking and FDA Approved sensors for health monitoring. He seemed to dismiss the FDA Approved Apple Watch sensors as being “for fun” or a gimmick. Despite your attempts to highlight features that have indeed saved lives and encouraged healthy behaviors, I’m afraid it fell on deaf ears. At least you tried. Thanks for another great video, Rene!

I’m curious how the pavlok device that gives you a mild shock and could help with such alarm fatigue, personally I find it’s amazing for anyone who has sleep issues and sleeps super heavy and really needs to wake up like for finals or anything. I’m curious what your take is on the device dr mike for something for waking up and stuff like that and the potential it has for the future if it adapts, and any issues it could help improve.

I have POTS, so the heart monitor is important for me so I can track my HR. ❤
@CrosFyre
@CrosFyre Год назад
There are several useful & important ways to use watches & other smart fitness technology for sport & fitness. The most obvious is simply measuring HR for training intensity & recovery intervals. A higher level use is heart rate variability (HRV) which measures the R-R variability between heart beats to advise on athlete's readiness to train hard - or not! Omegawave is the most public & experienced seller of this technology. HRV advice is often counter intuitive which I believe only adds to its usefulness. However it's all up to the knowledge & motivation of each user. To get the best out of anything you have to commit and do some research & testing. FWIW - I'm an engineer, sport scientist and elite / high performance coach - so perhaps not your typical end user. Gadgets are essential in my area to optimise training, recovery & measuring performance. Higher end watches like Garmin, Polar & Suunto allow more insight into training & performance for athletes.

I knew the EKG function of the apple watch would be a cash cow for the healthcare system. I worked in Cardiology and would get referrals from PCP"s from 12 lead EKG's that were interpreted by the machine. We would do a complete workup then costing $$$$$. Get rid of that feature Tim, it's not accurate.

The FHIR API has been an attempt at making the fast exchange of health records a reality in the US. The problem is the US healthcare system is not incentivized to be more effective in this area because the businesses try to do everything they can to keep people in their internal systems to maximize their internal profits. Making the transfer of health records easier also increases the security risk for this data which is what was found in the earliest versions of the FHIR API. Another problem with tying our records and healthcare advances to smart phones and other expensive technology is we inject a wealth gap into patient outcomes. This gets balanced a little as more research and development can lower the cost of cutting edge technology and make it more accessible.

Thanks for the invite Rene! Remember folks, when I say “overrated” I’m making a generalization for the majority of cases, but there will be instances where this new tech can save lives. So a Medical-Doctor / Social-Media Influencer sees that AI/ML Technology is advancing, Health Care is being slowly democratized and is likely going to be better at diagnosing health problems in near future.. and he starts fear-mongering.. Instead of realizing that doctors WILL have to adopt, and only those who will learn to work with AI/ML advancements, will continue to thrive in their profession. Not the ones who are opposing the change. It's sad to see one of my favorites.. in fact, The Favorite RU-vid channel is giving platform to people like this. @Rene Ritchie , what happened?
