Well as someone who has struggled for a long time with ill health, bad thoughts, heartbreak, stress. My thoughts are these. Don't eat rubbish food, give in to mass media headlines, terrible emotional turmoils. A lot of nasty sickness of all kinds is out there, in us too, if we allow. Colette is a good example of balance, peace, and rejecting all the bad, nurturing the good. We can all do this for ourselves and others. Even if we haven't created a Beltaine garden, we can do it our hearts and minds. First for our own self. Be good, care, find peace, and share it.

When we grew up going to the shop and having something sweet like a chocolate or cake, or even crisps was a special treat, nowadays the supermarkets are full of so many "goodies" and you see the shopping carts packed with them and such foods are every day. Also, we had no car. We walked miles every week going to school, the shops, and visiting people. Now the entertainment is laid on in front of the computer or tv. We are less active, and often, over fed.

I am a lady of some mature years. I live in drought stricken fire blazed burnt California. I live in a rental, a small, dead back yard. Forbidden to water, plant anything with roots deeper than six inches, I'm going to do something this spring. Find recycled wood, build raised planters, (actually my grandson will) find out what things will thrive naturally, will little water or light, unfortunately. I'm going to do something, for birds, bees, butterflies, (sadly, almost none to be seen,) for nature, myself, grandkids to enjoy. And my little sweetie service dog, Judy. 🐶🐿🐌🐛🐜🐞🐝🦋🌱🌵🌾👧👦

Why not try wicking beds, that would help with the lack of water Greenfaerie61537

You could get dish pans for the kitchen sink, and put all of your excess water out onto the garden. A little bit of soap or bits of food won't bother the plants. Of course if it's very soapy, or too hot, or if it has undesirable chemicals, just toss it. You can also save some of your bathwater for the garden. It may not be possible in a rental, but i save my laundry rinse water as well. Check your rain gutters, put buckets under them when it rains so that you can capture that runoff water too. If you are in southern california, you should be aware that the growing season is now. Summer is far too hot and inhospitable. Check out the facebook group "southern california organic vegetable gardening" for ideas.

I keep a small bucket by the shower. When I start the water I capture the initial cold before it begins to warm up, and use that to water plants. I also keep a pitcher by the sink for water if I'm warming it up to wash. Used to live in a drought area, too, so I picked up a few tricks. Sadly, many counties don't let you harvest rain water anymore.
@janethall-frith6829
@janethall-frith6829 6 лет назад
I'm assuming you live in USA, that's criminal not allowing the population to collect rain water, but then here in Australia, if you live in cities, they also don't allow that unless it's a very small tank for drinking water. Here on our property we have to harvest rain water, or we don't survive. I think with the rain fall becoming less in some countries, the governments might be forced to rethink their water strategies.

The reason they give is that it affects the aquifers and bay areas. I believe corporate agriculture is more to blame for water ills, and industry. But that would have an impact on politicians kickbacks.

Our food has less nutrients in it than it did before we depleted the soil and allowed Monsanto to tinker with the DNA of the seeds....that and all the Round Up pesticides present in all of our food including most so called organics. We feel hungry more often and, as much as we eat, our bodies are not getting the same levels of vitamins and minerals than we did 30 years ago.

On another note - I once read that you should avoid dairy foods when you have a cold, as they tend to thicken the mucous produced. I have put this to the test, and yes - it's true. So now it's plenty of vegetables, fruit and fluids, but no milk, yogurt, butter or cheese, until it's gone.

I volunteer 1 day a week at our local food bank. We no longer allow the patrons to go in the back to pick the foods they want, as most of what is picked is junk food. The fresh produce languishes in the fridge. We do not get many donations of meat so that is not part of the equation. We also provide food for children to take home to eat on the weekends. This is based on the North Carolina state guidelines for child nutrition for school lunches. Did you know that pizza, spaghetti and French fries are classified as vegetables? Fruit punch is a fruit as is jello. Processed chicken nuggets and fish nuggets are the protein. In the county in which I live in, 100% of the children in public schools get a free breakfast and lunch. 3years ago the no. One item purchase with EBT (food stamps in the USA) was Doritos. Now it is Pepsi. The sad part is, it is not much different for those purchasing food without EBT. I have been working in the grocery industry for 40 years and I have seen the decline of shopping habits. Even with all the press information about eating healthy, only 3 to 4% of all dollars spent on food go to fresh fruit and vegetables. That is an industry standard across the country. A little higher in more affluent areas and lower in depressed areas. There will be, as the saying goes, a rude awakening coming.

And more and more younger people, haven't got a clue how to cook a meal from scratch. It's mind-boggling really. We're perhaps, only a generation away from a time when everyone (except the very rich, I suppose) knew how to cook or they got very hungry indeed.

Dropping essential oils on your stove is such a great idea. A lot of people are jumping onto the essential oils bandwagon. As a result, companies that produce and sell these oils are putting out advertising propaganda. It's worthwhile to educate ourselves about how essential oils are made, and how they should be safely used. I try very hard to buy only organic essential oils, mainly from Mountain Rose Herbs. Considering that it takes a room full of plant material to make one bottle of essential oil, imagine how much concentrated pesticide could end up in that bottle. Also, essential oils are very powerful and concentrated, they are extremely powerful solvents. You should never keep essential oils in a plastic bottle, or use them in a plastic diffuser. They will break the plastic down and cause harmful chemicals to be released from it, no matter what the company says. It also makes me very upset to see companies tell their customers to add essential oil to drinking water. One drop of essential oil contains the same amount of active volatiles as a hundred or so cups of tea. If you are going to apply EO's to your skin, make sure they are properly diluted. There's some great recipes here blog.mountainroseherbs.com/

I totally get what you are talking about regarding the Holidays.... I would bake like a maniac giving out trays of treats, put up a huge tree, gifts, etc. I finally decided this year to STOP. I am not baking tons of treats, I put up a table top tree, bought a few gifts and that is it. I will focus on my Mom who is in the Alzheimers' facility and trying to bring some joy to people who live there. I am trying to find the joy again as well as the peace! I wish you a blessed day..... stay warm!! It's cold here too!!

I look forward to viewing more of your videos....I love to grow herbs as well, I don’t eat meat, dairy, or eggs, I enjoy baking my own bread, & just about the only seriously processed food I eat is Non-GMO tofu. I adore raw & cooked oats; eating them every day. (I do have Irish genes in “me blood.”) Hugs & love from Texas!! 🕊🙏🌱❤️👋

I have had the same thought watching clips from the 60's and 70's and I know that as a child growing up in the 60's and 70's in Canada we were outdoors all the time except for meals and bed/bathtime. We didn't snack much between meals, rarely ate until we were full as there usually wasn't enough food for that with 4 kids in the house. Groceries were bought on payday and had to last for the most part until the following payday so when you were out of something you were out. There wasn't credit cards to put grocery etc. on until the next payday. We rode bikes everywhere and aside from that took the public transit. We rarely got driven in a car anywhere and definitely not to school everyday as happens now.

The only things that thrive here, in the valley are indigenous plants, that find their own way. Capable of withstanding frosts temps that range between freezing and boiling. I have a tree in my back yard that drops loads of leaves, don't know what it is, but it does fine , takes all sunshine. But you've inspired me to try, and find out what I can do, be allowed to get away with. And, reuse, find things that others don't find resourceful. Do something. Not just give up on it. I've resolved to figure it out. Not just for me. The goddess is here too. She's everywhere. I hope she'll help me help her.

On the subject of people in old news reels of 60s & 70s not being obese I think in part this is down to the fact that not only was the general population not eating vast quantities of processed foods but also people were more , generally speaking, more physically active. There was a great deal more manual labour both in paid employment and more generally, children walked to school, played outside etc. so all of this contributes to health and well being and maintaining healthy weight. It seems to me that there is a whole swathe of people who seldom, if ever, walk anywhere! Have only just discovered these videos...enjoyed the sense of being right there in the cosiness of Bealtine Cottage savoury get the conversation .

Instead of brown sugar maybe you should try a half teaspoon of honey in your coffee, it’s great. I grew up in the sixties and my family and most Canadian families ate all kinds of baked goods regularly, not realizing how hard it is on the body. In later years they died of cancer, had Alzheimer’s, arthritis, etc. They were not healthy at all. In my immediate family we only eat anything with wheat in it as an occasional treat and we, for the most part are much healthier than our parents generation. Oatmeal rocks!

Dear Colette, my experience as a long term informally trained home health caregiver, is, that, When our bodies are under attack, nutrition is key, only that which is necessary should be consumed. I have been thinking about this topic of food and weight for awhile now. I have been thin my whole life up until last year when I started gaining fat around my stomach, back and thighs. I've been trying to figure out why and how to eat. The ironic thing is that I actually eat healthier now than as a child. I don't eat grains or sugar now but being from a poor family we ate mostly grains because they were cheap and filling. What has happened to our food supply, I wonder. I feel that in known and unknown ways it has become adulterated. I'm thinking that all the toxins in this world are making our bodies malfunction. I feel that our food supply is our most sacred commodity worth more than it's weight in gold. What have people done to it?

I agree people are heavier and so many children are over wight at such a young age now. My son went to Ireland a few ago and spent most of his time in rural out of way areas, on return he remarked to me mum there are no fat people in Ireland, and everyone is so friendly. I have also observed that people are pulled within themselves, here we seldom look at each other or speak when shopping. I have fond memories of shopping with my grandmother in her small home town in Canada. We always walked and visited all the different shops; stopping to visit at each one and even to stop and visit with the blacksmith, which was very exciting to me coming from a large city in America. I thank you for reminding me of those warm memories and that I should take the time to tell my children about them; something I guess they have not experienced much in their lifetime.

Hi Collette , just wanted to add that the other thing we didn’t have back in our parents day was machines to do everything for you, no washing machines, dryers , fryers, toasters, soup makers, electric gadgets galore! We now have so much free time and sit in front of screens for most of it. If you work it’s much less likely to be physically than back then and there are many folk on benefits they don’t have to earn physically. Moving, doing, keeps you healthy. Takeaway food has become the norm rather than a rare ‘treat’ it’s no wonder there’s obesity and a sharp rise in related health issues. There really needs to be a change in mindset but of course that would hurt the corporations. There were no Fitness centres because we didn’t need them and sport was purely recreational . What a mess we have made of ourselves as well as the natural world!

I was out filming yesterday in nature and a lady stopped to talk to me about things. My father lived to 94years and my mother is still living at 93years, they always ate off small plates, simple food freshly made and never between meals. Michael Pollan has extensively researched food and is worth watching on RU-vid, his book Food Rules an eater’s manual is so sensible (and an amusing read)! His mantra “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants” says it all.

Stacee Massey Well said Stacey, if you don’t know of Dr Leila Denmark you may enjoy looking her up. Dr Denmark was an American paediatrician who lived until she was 112 years, a wonderful woman of common sense who developed the whooping cough vaccine and had a lot to say regarding an affordable diet, she gave up sugar in her 50’s. As she said “many people take better care of their cars than they do their own bodies” best wishes

In about 100 years time, the average American has gone from consuming 18 pounds of sugar a year to eating 180 pounds. The high fructose corn syrup is in almost everything from the store. It's a health epidemic. I make all my own meals from scratch. We grow our own and buy organic from local farmers. I still consume sugar but much, much less. I lost 35 pounds over the last 3 years without "being on a diet". I look forward to seeing others comments.

I agree totally - we were much healthier as a nation than we are today. You ate at mealtimes, never in the street. Snacking was unheard of, as were ready meals, and convenience foods were few. In 1983 we discovered that my 3yr old son reacted strongly to additives in food, especially E- numbers. As it was before the days of research into the effect of chemicals in our diet, my only option was to cut additives out of his diet altogether, and as we ate as a family, that meant our diet too - me, my husband and our 5yr old son. I made almost everything that we ate, and learnt to read the food labels on items that I couldn't, such as dairy, processed meat or fish etc. We ate very little sugar, and items such as crisps, sweeties, chocolate and fizzy drinks were never bought. At Easter they were given books or Lego, not Easter eggs. My sons are now strapping, healthy men, both over 6'6", with a passion for cooking and eating healthy food. We all benefitted immeasurably from following this "diet" and still do to a great extent today.

You speak my exact thoughts, Colette, re Pathe news. I remember at school there was just one girl in my class in the’60’s who was fat, bless her. But I always notice that there were no fat people on the videos, in addition, dress sizes were smaller. I like to make my own clothes from vintage patterns, and a size 14 in the 1950’s was the equivalent of a size 10 now. Also, if you have ever tried on a garment from the’70’s the sleeves are so incredibly slim. I’m in total agreement with your comments on the atmosphere of consumer stress/materialism whilst shopping for Christmas; one can feel the pressure in the atmosphere, and yet I’m sure, if asked, most people would love to go back to the Christmases of before. Now, where I live, people start putting up their Christmas decorations as soon as bonfires have gone out…in fact some folks just leave their excess of outdoor decs up all year, dangling from the gutters in the glorious summer months…..😮… re room freshness I just open the windows every day!

Thank you for speaking on over consumerism, especially around the holidays. I have a large family and Christmas shopping was becoming a financial burden rather than a joy. So now at the family gathering each grandchild gets one present to open and each family brings a basket in which to collect a homemade goodie from each family participating. The grandkids have plenty of presents at home and we have had so much fun with this exchange of a simple handmade item. I love the pace of your film stories. The world is mad as it runs always faster. We eat on the run and do not take time to enjoy the true taste of quality food. All of this is determined by the large companies who program our very lives. It is so sad. I love your calm voice of reason and many viewer agree with you. Keep us thinking, Colette. Glad you are getting a bit better. Be strong for trip to grandsons in Canada. Come home to Ireland refreshed.

I use DoTerra diffusers- just add water and 100% pure essential oils- therapeutic grade. The diffuser plastic is hospital grade and will not degrade with citrus oils. I believe the diffusers do not heat the oils and therefore retain the healing properties of the oils .Their oils are made from plants grown in their native countries. I use them every day- in the diffuser or mixed with coconut oil for my skin. The diffusers really pump the oils into the air and the smell is amazing- just make sure they are 100% essential oil for the benefits.

You dated yourself when you said: “... get dressed up to go shopping...” LOL... now people go out in their pajamas or spandex tights so tight one can see every private contour... at least that is how it is here in the states... Walmart is a ‘great’ place to go people watching to see all the vagaries of modern dress.

I see the people but I can’t watch. Walking crotches is gross. So many women think it’s cool no matter their size it’s gross. I try to look at a tree or plant even a brick wall than them. It’s only gotten worse now in 2021

Yes you are right. Even as far back the 50's even further people were so much healthier. Food came from the land, no pesticides no additives. Puddings were home made not full of sugar and other hidden rubbish. It is so easy to get pulled in to consumerism, we have all done it. New fads easy living. I didn't allow my kids fizzy drinks and people thought I was mad. Or bottled juice drinks you have to dilute. Fresh or water were their choices All 3 of mine love water. And not one has had a filling and they are 25 18 nearly 17. If we learn ourselves and have the will power and educate the younger generation maybe things can change. I am guilty as charged , chocolate, cakes. But making your own food is so fulfilling and healthier. I have ailments that I wouldn't if I had been more sensible. It's only now in my 50's I'm realising that we aren't invincible and choices can and need to made to be healthier. Blessings xx

Having a cold is not a failure. I think our bodies do such an amazing job in dealing with infections. But I also think those wet climates like those in UK or Ireland have their own particular health issues. I live in Japan in a mostly dry climate half the year and humid the rest. Skins issues. Allergies issues are very prevalent. So geographically we need to know the nutrition that suits your region. We went to the Home and Colonial in the 50s and early 60s. Oh. You are allowed to get ill. Best wishes

Indeed, you very rarely see overweight people in these old documentaries or news. Noticed that too. As for sugar and wheat out of the diet, if you are suffering from osteoarthritis you will notice a very quick improvement. Just taking theses 2 things out of the diet can make you loose weight in a very short time and you will then probably "plateau" at your ideal weight.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm so with you. I always was a cild of nature, loved playing at the wood, climbing up the trees, spending all days in the garden... Nevertheless i got Asthma (from the first years) and later Neurodermatitis. So i'm used to be carefull for what i eat and which cosmetics i use. I can't bare syntetic scents and flavours in food. Fortunately in Germany you can buy pretty good and payable cosmetics of pure natural basic without chemical bombs and organic food. I try to avoid conveniance food, rather cook fresh - if possible from my own harvest. So it works for me anyway. But i really can't understand how the food industry could take over so much. I grew up in Eastern Germany. Life was much more simple there. Many people had their own gardens to grow their own vegs and fruits - and to share and exchange with their friends and neighbours. Now, with the pandemic and the war in the Ukraine (only ~1000 km from our borders), people re-think the system and try to be more self-sufficiant. We had a little political change last autumn. After 16 years of conservative policy the social-green-liberal government tries to handle all the problems the conservatives left and created and to face these big and needed changes for the future. The greens already made some good steps in energy and agryculture. To better save people and animals from money greave of business and climate change, these are other points. But till these changes work, it will take more time again and the old government already lost so much time and sabotaged good changes or crashed them down, i could cry. I've always been an optimistic person but at the moment it's really hard to stay so. 💚🌍 If people would live in peace together and with nature, in balance - without pressing out whatever they can - we might not have these big troubles now.

Anyway, regarding your possible disappointment with human nature...that's one of the ONLY things we can depend on!!😆 People WILL disappoint us, (And we will disappoint in return)! Carry on, don't fret, things seem beautiful there! And, always seek truth!!

Looks lovely and cosy tonight in the cottage . I think a lot of people these days don't cook meals as much as they used to because they tend to have takeaway Chinese, Indian etc which can't be very healthy for you . I always try to cook from scratch because I also have looked at the ingredients in jars of sauces and it's quite scary the amount of sugar that's in a jar . I'm just going to sprinkle some oil on top of my wood burner ......Lovely . It will be interesting to see how much you lose next week . I'm going to try to see if I can lose a few pound before Christmas . Blessings to you all xxxx

My husband and I are both in our late 50's and, yes, we look at photo of friends and family from 60's and 70's and we also noted that almost no one was over weight at all. In fact, people seemed quite skinny. I grew up in Southern California and my husband grew up on London, so it seemed to be a Western world phenomenon I would guess.

Most people in the 'western world' are far less active on a day-to-day basis, and yet are encouraged with not-too-much subtlety to eat more ... after all there's money to be made off a population who's sick, or unhealthy. Which is why I bet certain corporate entities kicked up quite a stink when that sugar tax was brought in. I love the idea of that orange getting all nice and toasty on top of the fire ... have you tried peppercorns? They're wonderful for clearing the sinuses and dissipating stale energy. :)

The problem we have in Britain and Ireland is that it is very damp. I know in Canada the snow is much dryer and can be swept away. Here, it is often sleet and then maybe snow, but is usually very wet on top of the ground which is soaked. It then freezes and we have ice. Canada has lovely snow, we unfortunately have mostly ice and damp, and that's why we feel the cold.

I am watching your videos completely out of order but I wanted to let you know that I have fallen in love with Bealtaine Cottage. While I was watching this video I noticed that you were using Lavender oil around your cats. After I lost one of my cats I read that Lavender oil can be harmful to cats. I am not sure about dogs this article pertained just to cats. Thank you for all your lovely post. You are getting me through a rough patch! Kim

It was a lovely video. I can't agree with you more when it comes to consumerism these days. pet's food is even worse. They don't have any regulations. Pets are eating things that are not supposed to eat. So much carbs with not much protein. They are just made from lots of by-products and food waste. Big companies need to take more responsibilities on what they are producing for human and pets.

I heard that not only it wrecks their kidneys but causes cancer and allergies. Even organic pet food in the big box stores is not purely organic nor well-balanced diet food. When people think they are giving the best for their pets with high priced pet food, it is not. It makes me super sad. :(

My thoughts on why people weren't over weight in those times is basically people ate more whole foods, little to no preservatives, foods were non gmo, meats weren't infiltrated with antibiotics, etc. Because of health issues I am eating a plant based whole food diet. I made the mistake of eating some of the processed fake meats which sent my health into a tailspin of which now I am eating gluten free as a lot of those fake meats are made with "vital wheat gluten". Although I thoroughly enjoyed them, my body did not and caused a lot of digestive upset. I am now making my own gluten free flatbreads using amaranth flour, sweet sorghum flour and such which are much healthier and my system does not reject them. Anyway, sorry for rambling... You definitely make a good point regarding what it is going on in todays' world. People have no time because both are working, striving for bigger and better... I personally am quite content in my little home, am not interested in having the best of everything and live a simple life. I am so much happier because of it. I cook most foods from scratch and eat lots of salads, potatoes and such..... I truly hope the pendulum will swing back so people start to get back in touch with what is important, stop relying on prescribed drugs to put bandaids on real health issues and realize that what we eat truly does effect our health.

you are always telling people, listen to mother earth, but reading through the comments, i have to say, listen to your body, it knows when your getting it right, i listen to my taste buds, and my stomach, but unfortunately youngsters wernt brought up with real food, so, they cant tell the difference, between good and bad, but they should be able to tell the difference in their health or lack of it, they must have noticed, how, pregnant women develop strange eating habits, thats the bodies way of saying, i need whats in that, but just like smoking, food has been made more addictive, by additives, your body, really doesnt need, all that food, the more you eat, the more toxines your body produces, but, that dosent mean, go in the opposite direction and become anorexic, everything in moderation
