For healthcare in PR it's best to pay for Triple S. Most doctors and hospitals accept this plan. They can also recommend the different doctors. They provide a directory of all their specialists . I think that would be the easiest way , although as all healthcare plans, they will check your health history before including you as a client.

Yes, a timely video since we will be looking into getting PR healthcare in the next few months once we close on our house in the mainland. I found out about the ER the hard way a week and a half ago when my daughter dropped a heavy object on her foot and we were waiting 4hrs fir X-ray results. We were literally sitting in each other’s toes trying to stay unfrozen! Needless to say when I went for my ear infection this week, I came armed with tennis shoes, long pants, a hoodies & food & a blanket in my bag! I think it’s b/c the use forced air systems in those place like in the states. Horribly cold! Thank you for your video! Keep up the good work!

You should also research how much does a general physician earns/gets paid by the insurance providers. I know the purpose of the video is to inform of..., and that you are overall satisfied by the medical services but, once you do the research and compare to medical providers in any state you would realize why many (providers/facilities) are "missing" the premiums you are used to back at home. I'm glad you're doing great.

Jen, you are spot on with the office temperatures, and the cash basis. Overall, the pandemic brought improvements. From one who lived in the mainland a long time. Decent health system. "Out on the Island (non Metro)" doctors offices would be more likely to operate on the appointment window basis.

I lived in USA for 30 years. Born in PR. I came back. One of the things that won't change is daily medical care. I live in a small town in the Southeast, Yabucoa. Everybody know weach other. And doctor's experience is like visiting a family. The primary care physician always advice you for the specialists. I may have to move back to the USA. And I fear the lack of how different is this experience there.

My husband is a retired USPS and gets Federal insurance we just moved here in August and we switched to Triple S in January it’s almost $180 cheaper than we were paying with BCBS HMO. The copays are so cheap $2.00 or $7.50. Even his insulin that I usually pay $90 is free. The only issue is in Humacao the offices don’t answer their phones and most have long wait times. I have a cataract I need removed and I was lucky to find a new practice in Caguas that I was able to have a consultation and get scheduled in just about 6 weeks much better time than the States. I did find out that any prescription for opioids must be filled within 48 hours or it’s void and you have to get a new one. They will not refill any opioids from the States or give you refills here.

Jen. Thank you for this information. I was planning to return to P.R. when I retire. However, I was not too trusting with the healthcare as I do have Chrons. This is after I took my mom for a cardiologist visit. My sister went there at 4 am to get a number and my Mom, appt. Was at 8. And made #2. The wait time she was seen at 11 am. In Fl. The doctors see you on time. That freak me out.

There are actually Doctors that take appointments. With COVID, more Doctors are taking appointments and I hope they continue long after the pandemic.
@camiive
@camiive 3 года назад
The problem in the island is that since many doctors are retiring or leaving there are too many patients for every doctor. It will get worse with time because doctors are not paid enough and the prices are set by the health insurance companies (the reason why it's cheaper than in the US even though the quality is the same). In my experience I always get an appointment, but you might have to wait a bit because of complicated appointments or hospitalized patients. Since they passed a law a few years ago regarding appointments at doctors offices wait times have been reduced (I no longer get to read my books when I go), but getting an appointment will take longer, specially for specialists. Also some doctors don't take health insurance, often highly specialized doctors, because health insurance often don't pay them. I had a doctor who performed a procedure on me that told me "Great, another one I'm doing for free" because he knew my insurance would not pay him (we had a great rapport and I also reminded him I was his bosses daughter so everything was fine), but a few months later he moved to the US.
@andith
@andith 3 года назад
According to my sister, who has health insurance there, it is better than here in Alabama. Spent months looking for health insurance for my daughter, paid more than $300.00 a month, had to be fighting for them to pay what they said they covered, and most of the time we had to be paying a lot extra.
@puertocool
@puertocool 3 года назад
Very thorough advice. I would also add that Medicare and Medicare Advantage are far superior than any state. Everything is paid with no co-pays or even needing permission to see a specialist is not required. My plan even includes paying for off the counter drugstore items. Some plans actually refund part of the Medicare payment taken by Social Security. If you are looking for your primary doctor, use clinics like Migrant Health Centre that has many doctors to choose from. Unfortunately the best specialists are swamped and do a poor job of scheduling appointments. Stay away from doctors who will not give a reasonable appointment time. Like anywhere there are good and bad doctors, so references are important. One major difference with States is that no doctor will rush you through, maybe a reason for appointment waits.

The bottom line is you get what u pay for. In PR healthcare is cheaper but you gotta wait for months to see a Dr and you gotta bring your own stuff if u stay at the hospital. In the US, it's expensive but you can get an appt within days and the hospital provides everything.
@camiive
@camiive 3 года назад
It depends where in the US you are. My aunt in New York always had to wait weeks/months for appointments. In Puerto Rico the problem is all the doctors are retiring or moving to the US so for every doctor there are too many patients. When I lived in the US I didn't go to the hospital so I didn't know they provide pillows. I find that extremely disgusting using a hospital pillow used by many others and filled with God knows what with who knows what ailment. Highly unsanitary. I don't like it when they provide me with bed sheets here in Puerto Rico.

In the states is horrible. I have Blue cross and blue shield because of my job, but a member of the family tried to get medical insurance and most of them were practically a scam. Paying almost $300.00 a month and the co payment was $25.00. only part of the medicines were covered and only part of all the treatment. Oh, and the person had to be calling because they never paid on time. Then, the point is, investigate, before giving opinions.

They are both horrible, not the actual medical care which is excellent in both, but the health insurance companies who at the end of the day determine what they will pay the doctors and what care you are allowed to get. I come from a family of doctors and used to work at a hospital here in PR and it is very frustrating when, after much fighting, they get paid very little for a procedure (I once had to get minor surgery in an OR and my surgeon was only paid $75) and often have to spend hours on the phone with insurance companies trying to get treatments approved for their patients.

I have question about the power situation there. Do power outages happen a lot, or is it reliable.
@joaquinvilanova8764
@joaquinvilanova8764 3 года назад
Power outages are not common the do happen, and if a hurricane comes you might be out of power for a few days. But most people learn to live here and have power generators. Which the probably only use 2 to 3 times a year.
@LizRodriguez0418
@LizRodriguez0418 3 года назад
Also some condominiums have generators for all apartments and some only for elevators and community common areas. They have been investing making the power system more resilient in the island but occasionally you might experience a power during a strong storm. Some areas in the island have a stronger power grid.

It's unpredictable, sometimes you get several in a week and other times you don't have one for months. They usually last less than 5 minutes. Just get a generator for the times they go over 5 hours.

Bit of advice, try calling out any laboratory near where you'll be staying. In the airport, I find it'll be more expensive. Like, most things in airports are.

I work in a hospital in NYC. And you know what is the primary complaint from patients. Why is the DR taking so long?? One of the new Drs takes his time interviews patients, gets to know him and of course people complain that he is taking to long. The old drs already know just asked them why they here and try to get them out in less than 10 mins so the pts don't complain. Some states offer only essential coverage. Others high deductibles, 50% co- insurance, copays. Health insurance state to state differs and a few are great and majority are ridiculously expensive due to the Affordable Care Act. If you want low yrly deductible and long term out of pocket expenses you have to take the gold or platinum coverage.

As I stated in the video, health insurance in Puerto Rico is significantly less expensive than what I paid in the States. But you are correct, it differs state to state.

Does your primary physician and staff take the time to get to know their patients? It seems like they would have the opportunity if they aren't bound by appointment schedules. I am glad you are doing well. Stay strong and healthy 💪🏾 😁

Triple S is the BCBS insurance here. When you move, it will probably save you money to switch. Triple S tends to be less expensive than BCBS stateside, and BCBS may consider PR "out of network" which will cost even more. Best wishes for you!

Does an inpatient still need to provide their own necessities such as sheets, blankets, toiletries, towels and even pajamas? Why is that? Here in the States the insurance company covers everything. .
@JenThereDoneThat
@JenThereDoneThat 3 года назад
Patients in PR bring there own supplies, including blankets and pillows. It is a very different system than mainland US.
@camiive
@camiive 3 года назад
I am shock that in the US you don't have to take your own things. I would never use pillows given to me by a hospital, who knows what might be in it. They give you PJs? That's worse than pillows. Why on earth would I wear pajamas someone else has been sick in. You do get bed sheets in Puerto Rico and sometimes they have extra blankets if you are still too cold after using yours. Also health insurance here barely pays the doctors, that is why many are leaving, they are not going to pay for you to have anything extra. Unless you have a Medicare Advantage plan and then they will pay for your groceries and utilities, but they will still not pay your doctors a decent amount.
