@@otakuROHIT Good for you, enjoy you time with your rats. The Wolf's ones surely are dead now. Almost all the ones I had 2 years ago that were still young are dead. I only have one single elderly rat with two mammary tumors left :( Great pets, but they don't live long enough.

It's really only safe to offer unsweetened bakers chocolate, and once per week at MOST. Please be careful with the misinformation in this video. Almost the only correct info here was to avoid KayTee Foods.

+Rose LaDavis - - I switched our rats from Kaytee to Oxbow, and I highly recommend the Oxbow brand. The directions on the label suggest making the switch slowly, just in case the change causes a brief upset in digestion. Making a slow switch gives their tummies time to adjust to the difference. Anyway, Oxbow suggests putting some of both types of food in their bowl(s): 75% of the previous brand, plus 25% Oxbow for the first few days. Then half old brand, half Oxbow, for a few days, and so on, until they're getting only Oxbow. Well, I tried to do that, but my rats were not interested in the directions! As soon as they tasted the Oxbow food, they wanted nothing to do with the Kaytee stuff. I even *counted* the Kaytee blocks in their bowl, since it looked like they hadn't eaten any of them. Sure enough, as soon as they had access to the higher-quality & more nutritious Oxbow, they refused to eat ANY of the old stuff. And about a week, maybe a little more, after making the switch, their fur was so much softer and smoother. (The condition of an animal's fur - not just rats, but cats, dogs, and others - is one indicator of their overall health.) And on top of that, my older rat became more energetic. She had almost entirely stopped climbing up the sides of the cage, and instead only used ramps to get to the higher hammocks and shelves. Well, after a few weeks of eating a *nutritious* staple diet, made specifically for rats, she was climbing and running around, playing with the 3 new adopted babies, & acting like a "kid" again herself! I was thrilled with the change! I just wish I had fed ALL my ratties Oxbow from day one. For any rat owner, or prospective owner, reading this: My ratties say Oxbow is a *very* good choice! But regardless of which brand you decide on -- the most recommended being Oxbow, Mazuri, and Native Earth (fka Harlan Teklad) -- the most important thing is NOT to feed them a diet that doesn't even meet their minimum nutritional requirements. One way or another, that stuff WILL affect the health, well-being, and lifespan of your pet.

Aww James you sound like such a great rattie owner :) I do the same and they do get so excited about new foods I found they will do cartwheels for meal worms. They hold them by the head and crunch off goes the head

Exactly! I still bought it though, and unless *everybody* is wrong it's still top-of-the-line rat food. I bought that and Oxbox just to be sure. I just got a baby rat and since they need more protein I'm feeding her Mazuri, whereas my adult rat I'll probably start feeding Oxbox once it arrives at my house. Since too much protein is harmful, I'm pretty confused as to why this stuff is still okay. But i guess we'll just have to see.

Haymitch4President I know that hamster owner often use this food as a protein booster. So in the future when I get rats I may buy it so I can just buy one food all together, if I can find an appropriate seed mix. For example the seed mix I have now is pretty good (not on it's own, it needs to be mixed with lab blocks) but switching to muzuri right now would raise the protein. I'm always researching the best things for my current and future furbabies. I might go with the other recommended brands though. But that's in the far future so I'll wait till than to actually purchase anything.

Haymitch4President I know I'm pretty late for this response but people recommend feeding the Mazuri Rat Food F6 (I think that's it) because it is much lower in protein and healthier. :)

How big of a square of 85% cocao dark chocolate? I'm doing so much research its spilling out my ears and we're probably about 2 weeks out from getting our first ratties

So wrong. A square a week, split between 3 or 4 rats maybe. One square per day, for a tiny animal is only going to make an obese animal.

Its a fungus on the corn that is dangerous, over time it can make them really sick. Buy human grade corn that's ok if they like it. :)
