In this video I am sharing 5 tips to set your kids up with healthy food relationships that start as a child. Healthy habits and understanding of food starts young, and can save them from a lifetime of struggle or lessen it. I am sharing what I have done as a mom of 4 but also as a fitness professional.

Totally agree! 🙌 I honestly think it's a form of child abuse....over feeding your child junk food to keep them happy is a parenting problem. Thanks for your honesty!

Great thoughts! So much responsibility rests on our shoulders as parents! Saying 'no' to junk food is NOT being mean, it's the best choice we can make for our children! 😊

Yes and amen on EVERY single point. I was raised by a mom who I can remember calling herself a "Fat slob," and other terms from as young as age 4. A whole lot more of learned toxic food relationship later, and I struggled with an eating disorder that I was in an out of treatment with for 15 years. American society is rife with disordered eating mindsets. Thank you so much for saying it out loud as a strong, knowledgeable, woman of expertise.

You are so right! You wouldn't let the kids ride in the car without a car seat because it was uncomfortable, you're the Mom!! You are in charge. You aren't their friend. Kids need to feel like someone is in charge, they are too young to feel like they are responsible for themselves. Everyone feels better on REAL FOOD! Trust yourself and your kids will too! Sorry for the rant, I feel very passionate about this topic, too...

Ashely I love your videos! I grew up with a mom who had "overcome bulimia" and was crazy controlling about what her 3 daughters ate. I accept responsibility for myself as an adult, but admit I still have struggles controlling myself around food. I learned at a young age to hoard food and binge in secret with fear of being shamed around food. Instead I was body shamed by mom mom constantly although I was never overweight. I struggle with how to raise our children around food with a good balance of healthy and not because more than anything I don't want my kids emotional binging.
@GraceandGrit
@GraceandGrit 7 лет назад
Stephanie Gunesch wow, I am so sorry to hear you had to endure that. It's no surprise you are very sensitive to this topic and want to make sure your kids don't suffer as you did. Not having good food and bad foods can help prevent feeling shame when you or a child consumes something from the bad category.

I agree with everything you stated lady. I have boys and I started teaching them about nutrition early by taking them to the Farmers markets and talking to farmers. Explaining to them how food grows and why we should choose this food or that food. They watch me and give input about what we purchase as well as meal plan. They have never ever had many of the things that others deem “normal “ Foods because I simply never brought them into our homes, sugary cereal, soda etc. When they eat sweets I make them from scratch. I had a health issue for myself and decided I was going to detoxify my body in an effort to restore it. I began a mostly vegetable juice regiment. I remember my son asking me “mama why aren’t you eating anything anymore with us “?🤦🏾‍♀️🤭😔 We always ate together and I always cook. That moment I realize this ain’t gonna work and the message I was sending to them was not one that I intended. I quickly revamped. Again, your videos are always spot on. 🙌🏾😉👆🏾👆🏾

I totally agree with you on every point. I have three boys under the age of 9yrs, and My two oldest boys are already showing signs of body image issues. Not because they are over weight, but because they feel the pressure to have big muscles. Maybe you could do a kids version of a full day of eating. That sounds like a fun video. XO

amen!!!! i try and teach my children to eat healthy! my 5 year old has now started to ask me before she eats something if its healthy. now we arent too strict all the time, bc once a paycheck we will order pizza... but Last time she chose NOT to eat pizza bc she said "mommy, im not going to eat that bc i know its not healthy for me" & she is always drinking water. and ive actually plan to this week going through out pantry and fridge and giving away everything we do have left over that isnt good for us (bc yes, sometimes we do get some unhealthy foods) but my husband and i discussed that we would rather get it all out and stop buying completely!

We taught balance....healthy foods along with "special" foods. I can't tell you over the years how many of Dakota's friends parents would call their young daughters fat or over weight. And how horrified Dakota would be at that type of dialogue...."Mom can you believe they said that"? I wasn't and still aren't the best parent when it comes to my own relationship with food but I tried not to project that dysfunction onto my children. Great topic!!

This is a great topic. I think I became a more conscious eater once I became a mom because I did not learn growing up. I also teach my girls the ingredients, what is processed, learning about gmo, pesticide free, farm fresh. I also try to teach them to learn to eat in moderation because I lacked in that. Even if something is healthy or a treat, they all need to be eaten in moderation because too much of anything will hurt tummy. My daughters are police for other family members who do not eat healthy because soda pop, sugary and colored food are a huge no no. My girls do not even drink soda anywhere. Sorry for my long ramblings lol...very passionate because i really feel healthy lifestyle should be taught from early on so it doesn't become issue later on in life. Thanks for sharing.

Loved this post, I am by no means a perfect parent, but it pains me to see these overweight kids knowing the lifetime of battles that they will more than likely have to face. Anyway great post, I would love to see a video on how you get your kids to eat veggies, my kids will eat whole grain anything, protein, healthy fats, plenty of fruit, but veggies are a constant battle, the only thing I can get them to eat happily is spinach or broccoli hidden in pasta or Mac n cheese 🙄 lol, would love to know how you've done it.

I just started watching your videos. I'm a new homeschool mom of a 9 year old son. Our eating habits have been slipping lately so I needed to hear your brutal honesty :) My son was born with low tone and gross motor issues so keeping him active can be a challenge. He's not strong, athletic or into sports. I have been trying to encourage him to try tennis or martial arts again, which he did for a short time a few years ago. I think he is now old enough to notice that he cannot keep up with other boys his age. Do you have any fitness recommendations for him? We've been going for walks and hikes and I try to get him to a park a couple times a week but he doesn't like to go alone (only child and it's hard to coordinate with other homeschoolers during the day). I don't feel like this is enough though. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us and I look forward to more homeschooling videos also :)

I have a question about snacks. Do you let your kids have snacks whenever they want, even if they are "healthy" options? Or do you have designated snack times? This is an area I struggle with wondering if I have too much control over because I do not want them to lack their own self control when I am eventually not around. Currently, we have snack time, just as we have breakfast, lunch, and dinner time. I do offer them veggies to eat if they are hungry between meal and snack times. Thanks!

I grew up with a mother who was super critical of her body and it really affected me and my relationship with food. She always spoke positively of me and never understood how that affected me. It's been a journey of healing all of that but I am an on the other side and it feels. So. Good.

hi can you make a video tackling the issue of a partner who is unwilling to living a healthy lifestyle. I myself workout and eat healthy but my husband does not like living a similar lifestyle. This effects my children because my husband will drink fizzy drinks, fried food and bring junk food into the house on the regular. Its a constant battle to get my kids to eat healthy while their dad does not eat well. The junk food is present even though I personally won't bring it into the house.

This is about to be really long, so sorry in advance. lol But I somehow was unsubscribed from your channel apparently a few months back and didn't realize it until today. But I'm so glad I found you again. This video was very informative, and very real. My children aren't anywhere near being obese, but I do some of the things you just mentioned not to do. Now I eat healthy and workout and make sure they understand it isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle. But I also am not strict on them about their eating, I make all of their snack from scratch, but it's cookies and cakes. So it's still a lot of sugar. I always had that as a child, and I guess it's just stuck with me. But I don't know how to substitute things in recipes. For example cookies, I'm not sure what a good substitute is for sugar, and other things that goes into making healthy snacks. But I honestly haven't tried looking into it. But this video made me realize that if I'm trying to better my health, that I also need to do better about what they are eating even though they are so tiny. Now that being said my daughter will pick salad over any form of junk food any day. So she is already a very healthy eater. But I have very picky sons, who hate veggies. So it's hard to find foods they will eat. Glad I saw this, it definitely opened my eyes. Again, sorry it was so long. Lol Thanks for sharing!

Great video, I will admit some of it was hard to hear but neded. I was wondering if you would have any advice or suggestions on a type of curriculum or book series that would be helpful in teaching nutrition to young girls ( under 10). I would love to get my girls started on learning about what nutrients are in what foods and how they directly effect our bodies but I'm kind of at a loss on where to get accurate information on that.
@GraceandGrit
@GraceandGrit 7 лет назад
M. A. Hickman I wish there was a book series, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'd recommend just showing them the nutrients in some of your foods throughout the day and just starting simple. There are tons of food related documentaries that a 9.10.11 year old could appreciate on Netflix. Super size me, food inc, a few others. I would start there!

Great job, Ashlee! I have a question for you. I'm definitely one of those moms who is guilty of buying my kids the processed junk "because it's tasty" or "because I don't want my kids to feel like they grew up not having fun food". At this point, I'm much more educated and realize how unhealthy this is for everyone in our home. But, every time I bring healthier options into the house and STOP buying the junk, I'm met with a lot of complaints. I suffer from mom guilt big time. What are your thoughts on how to handle this? My oldest two are almost 15 and 14 and they've spent their entire lives eating a certain way. Is it too late for me to change their eating habits? Thanks, girl! xoxo
@GraceandGrit
@GraceandGrit 7 лет назад
aka Mommy... so first, I think the honesty of your post is amazing. I don't think it's ever too late, I mean look at how many of us mommas are trying to implement change well into our 30s and 40s. I think the fact that the kids are associating fun with food is a sign that there are some emotional attachments to food which isn't unheard of. I think the conversation should be open and your kids are definitely old enough to understand. Viewing food as fun, instead of just a way to fuel our bodies can get dangerous and leads to , I've had a bad week, Ice cream will help etc.

Hi, Ashlee!! I am working on clean eating with my family and when my children try vegetables, they literally dry heave. (Yes, this is probably my fault, but I'm trying to fix things and make a forever-healthy lifestyle for all of us.) Do you have any advice? I know consistency is key and we will continue trying to incorporate vegetables into each meal, but any tips are appreciated!!!
@GraceandGrit
@GraceandGrit 7 лет назад
Mama Confessions oh man, that's a hard one, maybe try raw instead of steaming? Add some seasoning and butter? Maybe some dips for the raw ones? Or just serve one they can handle ok, until there taste buds get more acclimated;) awesome job on trying implement more healthy foods in your home!

what do you do when your kids just won't eat. I'm choose very healthy yummy real foods for my family, but my boys will literally choose not to eat or they will only eat, apples, PB & J's, cheese tacos. I have tried everything!

I know and see where your coming from and have tried that as well as many other things, but they really and truly don't eat anything I make. I even try to make them take a thank you bite of everything and that doesn't seem to help. Bread and tortillas are about the only thing I know they will eat for sure. It's been a battle we've been fighting since our oldest son could eat table food. Thanks for the suggestion and the support of a listening ear. I just pray they will one day eat more and I'm sure when they hit 16 they will, I hope! My eating habits have changed since I was a kids. I eat things I would've never imagined I would ever like, but I don't remember just flat out not eating as a kid. Thanks and have a great day!
