Most of you probably don’t know this, but before I got into nervous system work, healing trauma, and all things neuroplasticity, I majored in exercise and biomedical science, as well as applied human nutrition (all these details are on my about page). I studied nutrition and all the things related to hormone health, sports nutrition, metabolic syndrome, even geriatric nutrition, at a fairly high level, but the nervous system ‘stuff’ pulled me in way more. (Please know that) going more ‘nervous system’ focused does not mean that I don’t cherish all of my previous studies! If anything, I’d say that I am craving being up to speed with what is out there currently in the nutrition and biomedical/endocrine and health-related fields. That’s why I love meeting those, like my guest today, who have followed these nutrition-related paths and have kept up with the current research, practical know-how, and more. Meet Kitty (Catalina) Martone, also known as, The Healthy Gut Girl. I originally met Kitty when I was on her show, and I’ve been following her work around hormones, sleep, the microbiome, and gut health ever since.

This was such a great collaboration. Would definitely like to see/hear more! Irene, a collaboration of you with Andrew Huberman would also be such an asset. And even so much more if the three of you would do something together, so much knowledge on various fields. Love this. ❤

I got myself off caffeine years ago by taking adrenal support like ginseng, licorice extract, herbs. I think that’s key in weaning off of it by feeding the adrenals vs draining them with caffeine. Great conversation!

Such a wealth of valuable information created by connecting two holistic approaches to the functioning of the body. This is the kind of incisive understanding which should be the first stage of treating illness, that is, addressing the food poverty, in nutritional terms, that exists in first world countries particularly. Although I've ventured down the SE path and also the Nutrition path, this video has created an essential commonality of approach for people seeking answers that are not provided by allopathic medicine. Thanks for throwing the net wide.

Omg the podcast you did on her show is one of my favorite episodes you’ve been on - I might be biased because I love when you go into more societal topics but it was also so natural and you could tell she was really interested!

Thank you, such a valuable conversation❤️ I’m functional medicine practitioner, and I’m also familiar with your work, which I love. And I’ve done lots of work around my own trauma. Im so happy to see neuroscience combined with nutrition💓 We really need to bring more of it!

Omg even the first few minutes..insomnia, gut issues, uterine issues/(thickened lining and constant pain , adenomyosis?) Due to presumed increased esteogen.. omg all this ties in exactly with everything I'm experiencing!!!! Also.. my chiropractor stopped my uterine pain and I was able to stop taking BCP for that. .

I heard the statement about not (?) using magnesium citrate as the preferable magnesium supplement. If I heard that right could an explanation be given as to why that's the case and a recommendation as to an alternative compound form be offered? Thanks
@annetteprice
@annetteprice 2 года назад
There’s an alternative form recommended in the notes on this video - Jigsaw brand.
@Gerhold102
@Gerhold102 2 года назад
@@annettepriceThanks for replying. I'd noticed the specific brand, but I wanted to understand why citrate, in particular, is contraindicated in bowel healing, and which alternative (for example, magnesium taurate or chloride) is most appropriate. I live in England and I've yet to check whether Jigsaw products are available here, but I like to have an informed choice anyway. I've checked the Jigsaw website and it states Malate, Glycinate and L-Threonate are their alternative compounds, so that gives me specifics. They use Glycinate in Magsoothe. I often use Solgar products and I have some M. Citrate of theirs so I wanted to know why I shouldn't use that. I really appreciate your input. Thanks.

@susandennison1295 - Seth here with Team Lyon. If you find that you are woken up by the moonlight then it may be a good idea to get curtains. If it doesn't bother you then it shouldn't interfere with your Circadian Rhythm.

Hi Irene, what do you mean by “I know what works in my suite of work, but God we just don’t know what’s going on?” Do you mean that you know what works to heal the nervous system and trauma, but don’t know exactly how and why it happens? I’m a bit confused. Thank you!

Hi Lauren Jazy, Jen here from Team Lyon. Would you mind adding a time stamp to your question so I can check out the exact reference? It will help me to find it. Thank you!

I'm curious about the potential relationship between Gut health and Memory.
@teamlyon3109
@teamlyon3109 2 года назад
Hi Phyllis, Seth here with team Lyon. Great curiosity! Simply put - the brain works the best when the gut is working the best! Our gut health provides a very strong neurochemical influence over how the brain functions, for example, it is the main producer of serotonin, which is crucial for good mental function. Also, when the gut is in distress, this is very often a sign of unresolved survival energy in the nervous system (aka unresolved trauma). The main parts of the brain associated with memory are the amygdala (fear based memories), hippocampus (declarative and episodic memory) cerebellum (procedural memory), and pre-frontal cortex (semantic memory - tasks, lists). When we have unresolved trauma in our system, the limbic area and brain stem will be very active, and often 'living in the past', meaning they are still responding to threats that aren't happening any more. Specifically, the amygdala and cerebellum will be VERY active as they are the most associated with survival responses, so we may have lots of painful memories that are hard to escape and keep looping because these parts of our brains insist the danger is still happening. So that takes up a lot of bandwidth! As such, it can be much harder to access the much more pleasant memories associated with the cerebellum and the memory system of the pre-frontal cortex, which governs everyday things like shopping lists, where you put the keys down, etc.. For more on this, I highly recommend Peter Levine's book - Trauma and Memory.

I get bad palpitation when I take melatonin. Why does it do that for some people?
@teamlyon3109
@teamlyon3109 2 года назад
Hi Aiko Shimada, Jen here from Team Lyon. Details about specific supplements are beyond the scope of what we do here, and generally speaking when people have a history or trauma, and early trauma in particular, it's not uncommon to have paradoxical and unexpected responses.

I enjoyed this collaboration, and followed onto Kitty's work - but I am still unsure of her credentials? While I am happy to hear her experiences, I am unsure what her teaching is based in - nutritional consultant and a journalist - I can't see a lot there. Lived experience I am sure, but I had to dig to find this; but on Insta in the first scroll there was a bit of questionable vaccine/voting info for a public page. Just not sure. 🚩
