Averianna Patton, a former teammate and classmate of Nashville shooting suspect Audrey Hale, joins CNN's Erin Burnett to discuss the messages Hale sent her before the shooting occurred. #CNN #News
This young lady literally called her parents, the Suicide Hotline & police dept just minutes after getting the text: please don't beat yourself up, you did everything you could do.
There should be a shooter hotline/online sit, in which those like Averianna can send screen shot with shooter's name and phone number so phone location can be found and police are prepared to go to immediately.
This goes to show how horrible that woman was. She not only ended the lives of 6 people, including 3 kids, but she put this enormous burden and guilt on someone she supposedly cared about.

She seems like a very strong and stable person. I am also sorry that she was brought into such a sad and violent event. She did everything she could. The FAULT is on Audrey Hale.
It’s interesting that the “friend” she chose to message before the killing was a radio and events host with media connections. I think the shooter chose her partly for that reason. She was very introverted but deeply narcissistic and selfish, and like most school shooters she saw her act as a means of attaining special status. She believes, according to the texts, that this host (who elsewhere said she really only knew her as more an acquaintance than a friend), will one day understand her and sympathize with her, as will a certain number of people who will see her as a hero or cult figure for standing up for whatever it was that her manifesto is about. Several other shooters had manifestos and they all follow this pattern, from the Columbine kids to the incel guy who shot college students. They expected to be understood and gain sympathy when people read their manifestos and the world realized how it mistreated them to the point of making them do what they did. Really they’re all pathetic narcissists first and foremost. Deeply selfish people basically capable of murdering children for clout. That’s what it amounts to.
That’s what I’m thinking I’m thinking she wanted more chaos more news coverage a movie all that sick stuff. A killer w a motive that’s “bigger than them” like it’s some kind of starting point to change
The question you need to ask is: Why does our particular society screw people up so badly that they become willing to kill children for attention? Do you have an answer for that question? Because that would actually be super valuable. If you can answer that question we could actually make changes to prevent these shootings. You know instead of weeping and venting about them.
@@blogintonblakley2708 I know you weren't speaking to me, but I pondered over your question and the first 'answer' to pop into my head was that 'because we (society) allow it.' We don't protect our children. As much as we proclaim to, we don't. School shootings are rampant, and the solution we came up with to counter them was to teach the kids cower and become accustomed to shooting drills. Adults care about adults, and their comfortability only. just my 2c.
@@josieb9402 Hmm... so adults allow it because it's adults that matter and how comfortable adults are. I think I got that right. Averianna's attempts to do something reveal the most important missing link/ piece which CAN be created and put into place: There has to be a hotline number for people to call. If she'd had a place to send the screen shot and the name of the sender and her phone number, someone could have traced the shooter's phone, called the shooter, and postponed her plans until police could arrive. Police depts should have a team of members ready to act on the knowledge of what's about to happen. Those who have some insight something is about to happen, would be ready to act. Averianna did everything she could but legislatures and politicians are so focused on the guns, they are blind to other more timely solutions.
and what if the shooter muted the phone so as not to be disturbed? or left it in the car? also, the text did not mention mass shooting. all it contained was suicide, news and something bad going to happen, but no mention of shooting.
There are already plenty of services like that. In normal states like Florida you can even go to court and get a Marchman Act to confine such person to a behavioral clinic.
You really think she’s going to listen to some random individual when she wouldn’t even pay attention to the words of someone who thought was “the most beautiful person she’s ever known” I’m afraid you people trust in systems to solve problems too much and cannot come to grips with how normal people are capable of evil just like this
We could also send every student and teacher to school wearing bulletproof vests and combat helmets. Why allow little kids into gay bars so they can watch men taking their clothes off? Or were you talking about a different shot, like a shot to the eye in a transvestite porn video? Hey the Democrats let little kids into strip clubs, why not let them watch transvestite pornos with their transvestite teacher at school?
I don't think it's entirely worth trying to understand criminal minds. They tend to not make any sense, like even if you assume the things they claim their actions don't tend to actually move them any closer to their goals many times.
What should someone do, or can do, should they receive a text message like this? That's a subject I'd like to see discussed. That is information I'd like to have. Could someone talk about that please
Did you not watch the video as they discussed the timeline of events that took place after Averianna received the message from the killer? In case not, call a suicide help line and they will tell you to call local police, call local police and they will tell you to call the police non emergency line and then they will show up several hours later to speak with you. That is what she did and that is what happened. Now what YOU CAN DO is go to your local county district meetings and discuss with your local politicians about what you would like to happen when someone in your district receives a message like this. Take as many people as you can with you who support your idea. If they don't implement the changes then vote them out of office and find someone who will make the changes and vote them in. You can also run for local office if you are capable.

Averianna, the actions of the insane can never be understood or anticipated by the sane. Your father gave you the right advice. The text you recieved implied suicidal intent. Taking out grade schoolers as well could not be anticipated from that. The bureaucratic pinball you experienced on trying to do the right thing is proof of that.
There's nothing classy about you Richard. And your poor understanding of mental health continues the stigma and discrimination that discourages people from seeking help which could avoid experiences like this in some ways and enables abusers of those who have a mental illness.
I find it a point of interest that maybe could be followed that the shooter told Averianna so many good things about herself as a friend and how she was clearly respected as a person to the point of telling her "love you" with those benevolent wishes to see each other again, right before doing something so heinous to so many others. The psychology behind, wow. I know they're going to follow everything the best they can as they investigate, but I always hope they get inside the mind as much as they can to hopefully get people the mental help they need. But I know she must be completely blindsided and I hope she knows she did the VERY best she could do. It’s the most anyone could have done, so I hope she rests assured in that. Following this story hoping everyone has the best mental health care possible as they try to make sense of things. 💔

Truthfully, given the timeline, there was little the authorities could have done either. OMG, there was an opportunity to stop this tragedy. But a call to 911 did not get an immediate response. She didn't mention it in this interview, but I heard reports that she was on hold for almost 10 minutes before she finally got on the line with someone, only to be told to call the non emergency number. The line " not even my family knows what I'm about to do" should have been identified as a major red flag to the 911 operator. Lives could have been saved had the 911 operator taken it as seriously as it deserved.
Didn't you know that because of defunding the police (BLM RIOTS) that it now takes forever in most places to get an ambulance or anything? Even the police can't respond right away.
I didn't want to go there, but gender dysphoria is a mental illness. And many that have it are suicidal. And suicidal people are a threat to themselves and those around them. Over 30% of people that have gender dysphoria attempt suicide. And 58% had another psychiatric diagnosis, along with it. Mental illness and guns are a bad mix. The shooter's parents said she should not have had guns. The shooter texted her friend and said “I’m planning to die today”, so this was a suicide, by cop. We need to make it impossible for people with mental illness to be able to buy guns.

"Non-emergency line"? Someone who is about to commit a school shooting is a very highest point priority emergency. This person did everything she could from calling all those lines trying to stop this school shooter. But the cops again failed the innocent lives destined to live full lives.
The minute any law enforcement agency receives a call like this, a state-wide school lockdown should be called for. Any school within a 5 hour radius or more should be locked down. Why take chances. This is one thing that needs to change in this country since obviously the assault rifles aren't going anywhere soon.
There was no way to know a school would be involved. Hale just as easily (perhaps more easily) could have attacked a myriad of other places. Are we going to shut down an entire state for every call, when very few result in harm to others? Don't get me wrong, my wife teaches and I have a daughter in school, and I think many schools can be better protected...
I suspect that this would result in a complete paralysis of most all education. But only briefly, until the numbers were crunched, and found that the majority of all handgun deaths are in fact suicides, and that calls to suicide hotlines outnumber school shootings by a vast margin. Every year there are about 2 million calls into the suicide hotlines, but only about 10 active shooter events at schools. How are you going to identify the 1 potential school shooter among the 200,000 merely suicidal?
