The end was like a long decade-awaited revealing to me and probably most killswitch fans who play guitar >.< Finally showing the gear they use and the settings on their 808s, showing how they get their tone. Pure gold.

Thanks! I've seen guys use the OD808 both in the loop and in the front-end of the amp, so I guess it's really a matter of taste. I would suggest going into the front-end if you're looking to fine-tune your distorted tone and give everything a little more presence and bite. I hope this info helps - let me know if you have further questions...

Note kids: that Joel was smart enough to not put the level full up, even though HE personally does that himself. The simple thing he's trying to show by not putting it full at first is that it's different for every amp and every tone. Do what works for you people!

I was not personally on this shoot. however, general rule of thumb is the 808 would be in front of the amp and delay would be either in the loop or after the 808
@GodlykeInc
@GodlykeInc 11 лет назад
Rule of thumb is all "gain pedals" overdrive and distortion etc go in front. all time based effects (delay, chorus etc." go in the loop or after the gain stage of the amp or pedal.
@shredx81

You run the pedal in front of the amp (between your guitar & the amp rather than effects loop) to boost the input signal & drive your pre-amp (amp channel) harder. When you increase the gain on your pre-amp, it gradually breaks up & loses focus. The tubescreamer allows you to roll back on your amp gain to retain its natural clarity, while still giving you a very focused high-gain tone. The pedal's circuitry also compresses the sound a little.

Thank you Godlykeinc! I may give it a try in the future but for now I'm happy with my tone. Personally I'm good to go on my raw tone, that's just me. Thanks for the all the advice guys.

Right, that's it in simple terms, and it's pretty much what all the other artists on our RU-vid channel are saying about the OD808...especially the metal guys. Check out Erik Rutan's video for a more detailed explanation on why he uses the OD808 ...just do a RU-vid search for PqFTNoHAAS4 ...this video usually appears in the right side of your screen...just look over. Cheers, Jerry at Godlyke

@peavyamps - Sorry you are not digging the OD808 - you do need to consider that when adding another gain device there can be more noise, so you may need to re-EQ your amp or gate it. Check out our video with Amon Amarth where they are using the OD808 with your amp the 6505 - sounds brutal, but he is using a gate on it. When drop-tuned, the OD808 adds clarity to notes...

They set it at 12 o'clock, but it would really depend on your preferred guitar tone and amp settings, room sound, etc.

We assume that the answer is yes. Adam and Joel are die-hard Maxon users. We'll inquire about this the next time we speak with Adam.

going to pick one of these up today to boost a brand new dual rec ! now i only need to figure out a way that i can switch between clean and dirty tones without turning the od off .....

I currently own that Splawn Nitro that was being used by Adam according to Scott Splawn after giving him the serial. Will probably never sell it because of that on top of it being a tone monster.

As far as i know he uses a separate amp for his clean tones. He also sets the pedal with the "Drive" all the way off and the "Level" all the way up.

On Adam's rig in the famous Guitar World issue, it shows he has the Maxon on at all times and sets it behind his amp. My question is, how does he get a clean tone without shutting it off? My clean still sounds pretty dirty until I shut my 808 off. And it showed he had a Hughes & Kettner Triamp and a either a Mesa, or another H&K for a backup. He wasn't running 2 amps at once back then.
@GodlykeInc
@GodlykeInc 11 лет назад
Hey Dom, from what we know he does NOT cascade the 808's.. He has multiple amps and has an 808 on each amp.

@GodlykeInc Joel's six string was a caparison as well.

@DustinAndNatasha times of grace is jesse and adam. they were the only two in studio...kinda hard for two people that do vocals to play bass, two guitar parts, and drums...

@DustinAndNatasha it makes sense...hes on tour with a couple good friends while making some money... and he doesnt have to sit home and be bored while Killswitch Engage wasnt doing anything.

Yeah later, Adam came out and said that Joel was in the band. But now they are too busy with Killswitch which is AWESOME.

Back in the day he would just use his neck pickup and lower the volume knob on his guitar. He would get a bit of grit this way, but still a useable clean tone for what they do.
@GodlykeInc
@GodlykeInc 13 лет назад
@cmtriplecageipod Adam had a PRS 6-string and a Schecter 7-String - not sure of models Joel had a Caparison 7 and I think a Framus 6?

Any chance you could ask them how they used to set up their dual recs. I think everyone really loved that tone and are trying to find out if they were in mondern or vintage , silicone diode or vacum tube, about how much gain etc......

@peavyamps thats what its designed for. Kill alittle bass and give you more pick attack. And you usually should own a noise gate considering they kill the noise lol

@Deanguitarman123
@Deanguitarman123 12 лет назад
@peaveyamps that what it is designed for. Drop the bass and nothing a noise gate cant fix. And pick attack is worth 150 cause it will fix your tone a ton and give you more of an edge to your sound.

Love KsE/ToG. This video is the reason i bought this pedal, but it sucks balls. Ran it through a peavey 6505+ all it did was drop my bass an jack up the noise/feed back to a ridicules amount. The "pick attack" doesn't change that much for 150$.

Hey Kevin,awesome video dude!im about to get me an od808 but before that i hv some questions. Im gonna be getting most probably an AMT E2 as my main source of distortion (for a good tube metal sound but wld love some suggestions as well) and i wld like to pair it with the maxon808 for the obvious reasons Adam stated. Now should i plug in the 808 in the amp's efx loop or just through the front?Thanks in advance dude!

What kind of amps do these guys use? I know they use Splawn in this video, but I've seen them with Laney. What do they record with?
@snapascrew

They’ve used literally everything but the Quintessential killswitch sound is a dual rec, 5150, or framus cobra.

I bet Joel feels bad sometimes, knowing hes not really in the band, he is just playing while they are on tour. doesn't make much sense to me really lol He is very underrated.
