Artist Annie O’Donnell introduces her practice and new work commissioned as part of the Chemical City exhibition at MIMA. Referencing Teesside’s industrial and civic architecture, large-scale new commissions Future Booster and All Things Being Equal (2021) are imprinted with memories and sensations of the artist’s own experiences and the inherited stories of others.
The artist grew up alongside Billingham’s Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) site where her family worked in various roles. ICI was a major employer in the area between the 1920s and 2011s. Its presence has shaped the Tees Valley’s built environment, local ecology and sense of place.
O’Donnell lives and works in Tees Valley. She investigates histories of place, identity and belonging through sculpture, movement, performance and collaboration.
