A colleague got new hearing aids recently and it made her realise just how bad her hearing loss had got. She came out of the office once (I was on reception) and asked what the people in the next room were going with the door. They had just opened and closed it normally but it was so much louder than she was used to she thought they had slammed it.

I used to suffer from a mild form of hear loss and tinitus, so this gave me a bit hope and lots of feelings of happiness for Jess! Trust me, it is so weird and sad to be in a position of a person who out of nowhere stops hearing normal sound while some are super loud and makes you crazy..... I was scared, had to stay in the hopital for 12 days... I had doctors telling me that if there is no change in 6 days, I am doomed. I feel so happy to be able to hear sounds now as I used to! I had very little support. I have a huge respect for doctors, for all people loosing hearing or sight. It is truely scary and for them necessary to have people who support them more than anything else in the whole world. Thank you for your work! It is higly appreciated ❤️😊

11:48 It's so interesting to me how when she's trying to figure out what some of the sounds are, she's making movements with her hands that are almost identical to the ones Claudia is making. Having grown up with 60% hearing loss and regaining a lot of it after an operation as a child and going through a similar experience again when getting hearing aids as an adult, I can say that when you get a sudden step up in hearing ability you actively hear more than 'normal' hearing people for a while until you adjust. This is because your brain needs to learn from all the new sound it can now hear, which sounds are 'normal background' that don't need to be noticed too much. Before that happens it triggers all new sounds as 'high alert full attention hear this' processing. I actually was told by the Dr to not wear my hearing aids in louder setting like by a road until my brain had re-trained some background noise out so I didn't get overwhelmed and scared. I also understand Jess's terror at the slightly louder sounds. I was terrified to flush the loo for months after the operation as a child because of how loud and scary it sounded. I would literally run to the other end of the house to make the sound as quiet as possible! Congratulations Jess on your new hearing abilities, it is so magical to hear new things xx

Americans almost never associate a body problem with stress and go right to, "If I am having a strange bodily issue I must be very ill or dying", but then again, medical bills are a thing in the US, so nothing gets done in a lot of cases anyway, so you just anticipate dropping dead or adding to your massively crushing debt you probably have by that point. These new hearing aids are amazing. It's almost like you're not deaf anymore with them functioning properly.

@Hellena Rose I see your point, but in my experience it's usually insurance trying to wiggle out of having to pay the doctors more than it is the doctors refusing to take it. They just want to get paid, they don't actually care whether the money came from you or the insurance company. As for the anxiety inhaler, do you happen to remember what the medicine it had was? There are actually a few inhalant medications that have been shown to be effective at treating anxiety, so it was most likely one of those.
@Amy_the_Lizard
@Amy_the_Lizard 3 года назад
In my case it depends on the problem. If it correlates exactly with my stress level, I assume it's just stress. If it persists even when I'm less stressed, that's when I generally assume there's some underlying problem. Like my irritable bowel syndrome, which my primary doctor insisted was just stress, and would go away in six months or less, every time I brought it up for the two years that it went untreated! :D Then I got fed up with asking her about it and made appointments with several specialists without a recommendation from from my primary care doctor (which meant insurance wouldn't cover it) to find out why the left side of my lower abdomen was swollen and distended with pain in the swollen area off and on. Now I have some medications that seem to be helping some, but I'm still not sure if that's actually my only problem... Is this related to stress - probably! But even if you know something's caused or worsened by stress, after a certain point and a certain level of pain, you should still seek help. And if something really freaky happens out the blue, go see a doctor, obviously. Examples of really freaky: a large lump that doesn't go away (possibly cancer - happened to my mom,) severe abdominal pain after being struck in the stomach by a rogue basketball, followed by nausea that doesn't go away (turned out to be appendicitis - happened to me,) difficulty breathing after being stuck in the chest by another rogue basketball (turned out to be a cracked sternum - also happened to me,) sudden loss of sensation in limbs despite being able to move them, accompanied by aching joints, nausea, chills, and abdominal pain (no one figured out what that one was, but they gave me pain killers at the hospital, did some bloodwork, and monitored my vitals, until I started to recover after about six hours, so they just told me to come back if it happened again)

My dad was late 30s when he first got hearing aids after a lifetime of being hard of hearing and losing even more hearing after an accident nearly ten years before. He asked me once what that noise was, so I showed him there was a plane in the sky. He couldn't believe that it was noise pollution-he thought I was pulling his leg! It's really cool to get to see someone experience these things for the first time (or even the first time in a long time)

This is the year I've finally accepted I'm disabled! My conditions have slowly gotten worse until I can't hide it anymore. I've also gotten an assistance dog this year so learning to be visible in public. Embracing the disabled identity and community, mostly online as remote island living is difficult when you're different.

Good for you! My dad is "blind" (most aren't 100% blind) and he's been making me pick up the slack for decades...kind of annoying, like when someone asks you to translate everything someone else says

My mom has always had a hearing impairment. When she was young she got hearing aids, but back then the tech was very basic and didn't really help with the type of deafness that she had. They were so uncomfortable that she refused to wear them, and learned to read lips to compensate for her hearing impairment. Fast forward 45 years and she started losing her eyesight, and we finally convinced her to give hearing aids another chance. After picking up her hearing aids, my cousin and I took her out for lunch on the way home. She excused herself to use the facilities while we waited to be seated, and came out just as they started to lead us to a table. In what she though was a whisper (more like a stage whisper) she said with incredulity, "Did you know it makes noise when you pee?!" We were passing two tables of diners who had the misfortune to hear this mid-meal. One lovely lady had just taken a sip of wine, which she unceremoniously spewed across the table at her unfortunate dining companion, the other table tried to pretend they hadn't heard, but the looks on their faces said it all. I will never stop sharing this story. :D

Jessica was just saying a fact about something and then immediately repeating it in a similar manner and I was like: "oh, really great. she wanted to let things about her memory loss in the videos." but I didn't realise that I just accedentally hit the 10 seconds backwards button😂😂😂
