Heart (Magic Man) Kel's First Reaction 

Heart was good in the 80's, but they were absolutely amazing in the 70's.

Ann Wilson has some of the best pipes in the business.

Dreamboat Annie is such an iconic album, also Dog and Butterfly and Little Queen, I love Heart

Kel is from Vancouver where Mushroom Studios was and where Heart recorded albums and was a very well respected studio. Why probably it was released in Canada first. They also did albums for BTO, Chilliwack, and other well know Canadian bands.

45 years or so later and this album still holds up!!!!!

So happy for you, Kel. Despite your ultra strict upbringing, you've become a warm & embracing person, who has a whole universe of music to discover. You're so cool, Rich. I was 6 when I went to the Heart/Santana concert, in 1978. Nancy Wilson inspired me to pick up the guitar. She was so immaculate on the acoustic and shredded the electric. Ann Wilson said she sometimes has a difficult time performing this song live. Her first love is still in her heart.

I'm from the Kansas City, Missouri area. In the late 70's there used to be multiple band tours that came to our stadiums. The one at then Royals stadium, was called Summer Jam, and the one at Arrowhead stadium was Summer Rock. I remember seeing Heart for the first time live and it was amazing.

Roger Fisher's epic guitar sound and playing skill brought this song to light.

I was lucky enough to see Heart live in Vancouver in a small drinking establishment when this song first came out. I remember standing right in front of the satage watching them perform. Will never forget it. Thank you for playing this one.

I was totally the opposite, I'm a guy and grew up in a small town in the 70s riding my dirt bike, listening to great rock like this, drinking, getting high and reading Tolkien and Robert E. Howard Conan novels

Kel was forbidden this music. I believe it. I was forbidden, too. Devil music. Drug music. In fact, not even music, just noise. Couldn't listen to R&R till I left home at 15 in 1970. Whew. Freedom.

Heart is one of the most iconic rock bands that started in my hometown of Bothell, Washington. Such incredible energy, talent and drive. Ann Wilson, one of the greatest rock vocalist of all time. Nancy, her sister an amazing guitarist. And every band member, talented enough to have their own band! This band blows away ANY band today. This is true talent.

Mmm hearing this song brings back so many memories of my childhood in the 70's. Rich - How many songs from the 70's had bongos and that electronic buzz going back and forth. I can remember sitting on the floor listening to this on the record player. No headphones. My parents love music and shared it with me. Heart, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Sam Cooke, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Supremes, everything. This was wonderful. Thank you!

It must be a total and gratifying experience that Kel is going through. Her situation is as unique as I've ever been witness to. For someone with a trained musical background to hear these songs for the first time as a mature adult is unbelievably special. I kinda feel voyeuristic watching her reactions to what I consider timeless classic music. Very cool you two. Very cool...:)

Nancy Wilson: very early and prototypical shredder - but ... in slow motion. Amazing guitarist from day one (this album).

My dad actually brought home an album by Heart in 1971. "Let's Spend the Night Together" was on it.

Ann Wilson is a great guitar player, but Roger Fisher is a *phenomenal* guitar player and is the one who played these soaring harmonic leads that you hear in their early songs.

I love the reverb at the ending, and the simultaneous up/down pitch of the guitars, my favorite parts.

The Wilson sisters, from Vancouver, BC. Saw them in 75 at the old Montreal Forum. Opening act for Loggins and Messina. Heart was one of the most successful groups from the Northland.

One of the 70's BEST bands.

Magic Man had an impact on the music world in a similar way (but not to the degree) of the debut of Van Halen. There is so much going on in there and the guitar licks are so unusual that it riveted the attention of everyone in a cover band, including myself. A big feature of the song was one of the first instances of the use of an ARP Avatar guitar synth on record. Essentially a modified ARP Odyssey, it used a special pickup attached to the guitar and interpreted pitch as control voltages that the synth could process. Avatars were notoriously finicky and you would constantly have to tweak with a tiny screwdriver for the thing to register correctly. Even the minute changes in corrosion of the guitar strings over the period of a day or two could throw it off. (I used to have one.) It was such a pain that they later brought in a keyboard player to handle the synth parts on tour. The original ads promoting the Avatar presented the synth as being stolen from the keyboard world as a divine gift to guitarists. It depicted Moses holding the unit in the air like the Ten Commandments. The funny part was that the unit was a complete bust, essentially being more of a golden calf than any sort of gift. One other well-known band used an Avatar, but only in the studio: Led Zeppelin, for the horn parts with the song Fool in the Rain" on the album In Through the Out Door.

I watch a lot of reaction videos and you two have a special chemistry together. Keep doing what you are doing and I will keep watching.

I love Heart, got to see them in concert in 1982 and heard them play on the Boston Common in the late '80s. They did go pop in 1985, used outside songwriters, had a makeover with big hair and made music videos for MTV. They sold tons of singles but felt they'd sold out. In more recent years they went heavier.

Heart started their careers playing a lot in Vancouver BC and Mushroom records is in Vancouver. I had the pleasure of rubbing elbows with them at many clubs around my area and met Ann and Nancy Wilson in the interior of BC, at the time they were changing their bands name to Heart and were selling T shirts with the heart logo on it! I will never forget that meeting and had no idea they would go onto be legends in music!

Though Ann and Nancy Wilson are from just east of Seattle. Heart actually first made it big in Kel's hometown of Vancouver, BC! That is why DbA was first released in Canada. Ann wrote this song about Michaei Fisher the lead guitarist 's brother. They stared into each other's eyes and that was it she was smitten that is when she wrote the song.

Ah, brings me back to August 16th, 1977 at Convention Hall on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ during their "Little Queen" tour. I had center balcony seats, an unobstructed view. That was the day Elvis died and Heart dedicated Zeppelins' "Rock n Roll" to him in the encore. I went backstage@ ironmaiden in Houston in 86! Btw the drummer was the kool 1 . it's been so long i only remember Bruce Dickinson. I have bad seizures n they totally erase my memory!!!!😩😜

In an interview, Ann & Nancy said this was a true story about one of their previous managers. It rocks.

Ann had a relationship with their Stage Manager(?), Michael Fisher. Michael Fisher's brother, Roger, played lead guitar. Roger and Nancy also had a relationship. So brothers were in relationships with sisters and they were all involved in the band. Both couples split up at the same time and the band changed lineups after the album "Dog & Butterfly". The next album, "BeBe LeStrange", had the songs "Break" and "Even It Up" on it which are direct reflections of those broken relationships.

I liked the video just 5 seconds in because of the aviator cap. Very awesome.

I saw Heart live in the 1970’s. As a teenager, I fell in love with the Wilson sisters...and still am. Watch them do the tribute to Led Zep at the Kennedy Center. Amazing.

When you described Kel's "background", it kinda broke my heart a bit. I, too, came up in a household where raising a child was based on the '40's and '50's model....so I can somewhat relate (Peter, Paul And Mary were verboten, let's just say!). When hearing you touch on Kel's upbringing, I instantly thought of Green Day's "She". Kel might even like the song (all 2 minutes of it). The lyrics are simple but say so much. Great reaction! Saw these folks in '82 with John Mellencamp and am grateful that I did.

The 1977 live show is one of the best ever. Ann's "Barracuda" is the absolute best performance of her career bar none!

I remember I was living in Portland when they started getting big in 1975. They used to play at the local clubs before we had to pay more to see them in concert venues. One of the great rock bands of the 70's before they stopped writing their own songs and went pop in the 80's. After the original musicians left, they were never the same.

Dog and Butterfly was one of my favorite.

The aviator hat was giving me - Lori Petty in Tank Girl - vibes... Can't wait to see what else you react to. Like some of the more obscure instrumentals and songs of the 70's like Reunion - Life is a Rock (and the radio rolled me) or ELO - Fire on High...

Try also - from Heart’s Little Queen album - Sylvan Song / Dream of the Archer. Very beautiful and mystifying with mandolins and a long note sustained by Ann Wilson’s voice. You won’t regret it. Thanks for reacting to Magic Man.

This may be a little off topic, but you mentioned how well recorded the album was...and it made me think of my albums ( which Dreamboat Annie is one. I still like Little Queen more) But I have an album which I think is recorded beyond it's time that I wanted to mention, and that's Saga's World's Apart album. I think it's amazing with the variety of sounds and rhythms and how crisp it is.

I was thirteen years old when this incredible album was released and as you may imagine, this song would put me in a trance like state.

Heart was my big idols between 1983-2001. I even have a platinum reward record for their 'Heart' record 1985.

I love that hat and goggles! Super cool! Other Heart songs to listen to: Alone, Who will you run to?, Black on Black II. Also, Floor Jansen does an excellent cover of Alone.
