I interviewed Jon once by phone. He was so gracious and kind considering I was so intimidated talking to this man that my parents had listened to while getting high and eating pizza in our living room. The one thing I distinctly remember is that I was not sure it was him when he first picked up the phone because he kind of sounded like an old woman at first. I totally respect him for continually taking his music in new directions.
Outstanding! And how could someone below not recognize Jon's smiling face, and even more, his angelic voice? Tony Levin sounds great on bass (as he does everytime I've seen him play with Peter Gabriel). Seeing Jon this evening and looking forward to catching up with him after the show. YES needs to tactfully tell Benoit David it's time to go and embrace Jon back into the fold.
The bass guitar that Tony is playing was borrowed for this concert from Ernie Ball at the NAMM convention. Any one who is familiar with Tony's playing would know that this is not his amazing sounding Music Man bass and not his usual tone.
Dude, just fact that a guy over 60 years old can hit the same high notes with the same power that he did when he was 27. That high note he hits at 6:36 is as good as in any live performance from 1971 on and I've heard dozens of them. Now that is truely incredible. Lets just hope he can get over his current asthma issues and can sing on stage again.
WOW!!! AMAZING! This is the answer to people asking me why I keep listening to music from 40 years ago... Just 'coz this beats Madonna and Katy Perry etc.
That's Tony Levin playing bass (from Crimson) and the California Guitar Trio (who opened for Crimson) and Bill Bruford left Yes (to play with the more progressive King Crimson), but there is no Fripp here, my friend.
Jon Anderson IS the sound of Yes. I think it is sad that Howe (whom I love), Squire, White and Wakeman's kid are touring as Yes without him. This just proves that with his voice, that magical music comes alive.
Seeing as we've had to put up with a couple of generations of mostly crap since Yes, Genesis and the others graced the planet with their visions of sonic beauty, it is fitting that this music lives on while the rest dissipates at the local landfill. I think a studio version; cleaned up and perfected of this would be very good. This 3 guitar + Levin approach has enourmous potential and a large back catalog awaits! Bravo here. Jon looked like he was having fun.
@sa65cn1 Not started by him exactly, but they are all former students of his, and members of the League Of Crafty Guitarists. They were also initially on his record label, Discipline Global Mobile.
Actually, it's a compliment to both bands that the jagged Heart of the Sunrise riff was based on the remarkably similar riff from inner parts of 21st Century Schizoid Man. Anyone with music theory training can identify similarities in the two riffs. Yes and KC both played the Roundhouse, Rainbow Theatre, and such venues in London's psychedelic music scene in those days. Accept it. Both are great compositions, each just happens to contain the same basic kernel and go on to a different end result.
fucking legit love the song but all musicians like this are great and just truely show how versatile they can be when they do these types of shows, I steve hacketts acoustic also, :):):) just fantastic!
@paulyrich it looks like he is wearing his "funk fingers too" (seedeemoe) they are sticks that he puts on the tips of his fingers to get a more percussive sound. my guess is b/c there are no drums Jon wanted a sharper attack on the bass. dont forget that the sound would be different in the hall too.
those are funk fingers and are Tony's own creation. They are supposed to sound like slap bass without actually slapping. and yes he actually plays with them
It always amazes me that people think 64 is old. Where do you think this phenomenal music came from? Sure isn't Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake :) Jon and others learned from masters centuries old, adapting old to new. Rick Wakeman plays Harpsicord... a 15th century instrument. Jon plays mandolin, not exactly a new thing. What's old is new, always :) You may keep your hip-hugger bell bottom jeans, though. BTDT :)
Plus this is recorded through a little crap microphone. I'm sure it's bassier. He plays with King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, and he played with Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe when Chris Squire oned the rights to that name. And he played with Paul Simon, John Lennon, Joan Armatrading, Pink Floyd, Buddy Rich, Tracy Champan, Paula Cole......but you're right, it's not the best recording....
that was sweet.i saw yes for the frist time a few years ago. they dident do hear of the son rise but meny his including a acustic blusey round about rick wakemen was siting at a little piano. john anderson looks like a hobbit with the beard though. but i still thinks hes the shit!
hahaha that's good....because I sort-of like Jon Davison I thought they could get promoted to the name "Maybe". but, "No" is more like it. You're right! lmao
