Yes. Heart honors Led Zepplin. They were inspired by them. We might not have Heart if not for Led Zepplin. I love them both so much. Just, enjoy!

The emotion I felt was seeing Led Zeppelin themselves react to this honor. They did the band and the memory of John Bonham proud, as evidenced by Robert Plant's emotional response.

First of all, I can’t even imagine how much guts it took to perform this song in front of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Hats off to to them just for that. 2nd, the arrangement of this was beautiful however look how many people they had performing this song....whole choirs. Led Zeppelin was only four guys yet each of them was the best at what they did so when they performed it the song became one of the greatest rock songs ever written. The tribute to John Bonham with the hats was fantastic and I’m sure it was very hard for Jason to keep it together while performing. Like you said.... this was not better but it was a beautiful tribute to four of the greatest of all time.

Reading the comments elsewhere, Ann and Bonnie were terrifed about what Jimmy and Robert would say. They even considered sneaking quietly out in advance, to disappear forever. This cover gets so close to perfection, I can only say I am weeping within 30 seconds!

I read somewhere that the reason Ann Wilson wears that long black coat during this performance is to hide her set of giant brass balls she has for being able to preform this song in front of Plant, Page, and Jones.

If you seen any interviews with Ann Wilson even from way back in the 70s you would see that Led Zeppelin was one of the biggest influences on Heart and their music. This was a tribute. It shouldn’t be compared. I should be honored. I don’t think anyone else could’ve honored them better.

I don't believe Heart would want this to be considered better... I have never met anyone who aspires to be better than their idol, because it doesn't get better. That said, no one but Ann could have done this song justice. IMO one of the greatest female vocalists ever, and sorely underappreciated. I absolutely LOVE this version, but even though this one gives me goosebumps, I'd never compare it to the original. Mainly because unlike a lot of covers this one wasn't done to compete with the original. The whole point of the Kennedy Center Honors is to do just that, HONOR the original artists. Next to the original, this version beats any other I've heard hands down.

There's a reason why Heart was called the female Led Zeppelin back in the day hon! All you have to do is watch it again & actually open your eyes so that you can see how much the guys absolutely & thoroughly enjoyed this performance. You missed seeing so much! It was beautiful to listen to, even more to watch while listening!! Not only that, remember Ann's age at this time... she couldn't have killed it anymore than she did! I have to agree you cannot say anyone does Led Zeppelin better than Led Zeppelin themselves. The whole point of tributes or covers are to give their best interpretation of the band or the song and again I agree that this is the next best thing to the original. The vocals by Ann Wilson are testament to both Robert Plant and herself. She has to be one of the best female vocalists.

Heart has been covering Zep for years. They used to end every concert with a Zep cover, usually Rock & Roll (at least the 10 Heart concerts I've seen.) Jimmy Page saw them do one of Zep's covers early in Heart's career & he went backstage after the show & told them they had his personal permission to cover any of their songs any time. 😲

One of the reasons Robert Plant looked like he was about to cry during the Heart tribute performance was because he had just prior to the show been talking to his bandmates about Jason Bonham, the man playing the drums and who is the son of the Led Zeppelin drummer, the late John Bonham. Robert Plant was best friends with the father, and told his bandmates that he regretted that they had not invited his son Jason to the Kennedy Center Honors to enjoy it on behalf of his Dad. Then he all of a sudden Jason appeared on stage with Heart and Robert Plant was overcome seeing him.

Respect man! No one will ever do it better than they did, but that being said, this is my favorite "cover" of all time! Anne's voice is so perfect and with Jason Bonham, the son of the deceased original drummer Jon Bonham, it just adds a whole another dimension! It's both a tribute to Jon Bonham and Led Zeppelin, it's also a representation of the ungodly talent of Anne and Nancy Wilson and then you add an orchestra and a choir?! Pure magic!

"We created more beauty out of beautiful." What a succinct, incisive, and delightful summation. It's truly not a comparison, nor a competition, but it's own thing, and having that perspective only increases the capacity to appreciate a piece of music, or just about anything else. I was a young woman when I first heard Led Zepplin perform this song. It was, on so many levels, a revelation, a transformative experience that I'll never forget it--as was hearing, all these years later, Heart's performance of this song. (As an aside, I really like the way you evaluate music and look forward to seeing more of your reactions. Thanks for what you're doing!)

Stairway to Heaven is not just a song my friend. It is a spiritual awakening of the utmost kind. It’s not the lyrics, which are wonderful by the way, it is the notes and how they are arranged to form this song. It is a gift from God. You can say rock is the devils music, which I’ve heard so often from my Pentecostal background, but nothing that beautiful can never be evil. Stairway is truly a beautiful gift from God. Not just to the people from the 1970’s but to all mankind. I think what brought it home to me were the cutaways to Jimmy Page, thoroughly immersed in the moment... seemingly as if he had just heard "Stairway To Heaven" himself, for the first time. The libretto and melody will stand up to the music Masters' works throughout time. A signature work of songwriting that simply stands above the rest. A thought... You know what it is is watching the artist being honored so highly for such a great song that they did That's what it's so inspiring, the respect I'll guarantee Ann and Nancy weren't up there thinking "we're going to show you how to play this song" And Jason Bonham at the end looking up to heaven Both heartbreaking and inspiring. Bittersweet this world is. We should be just celebrating the goodness of life together and the gift of music that we have

I totally empathise with you...I think this celebration was more than just the performance by Heart of Stairway to Heaven. I think it was the culmination of events that led to this apex that made it as powerful as it was. John Bonham's son on drums, the power of the choral group doing backup vocals, the pomp and pageantry all combined to make this a heartfelt performance that brought me to tears and then on to crying. No, not as good as LZ, but worthy of recognizing that it was perfect for the circumstance for which it was performed. Perfection personified...again.

The best part of this video is John's, Robert's and Jimmy's facial expressions. It's easy to see that they were 'reliving' being in that time and writing/producing/playing this absolutely spectacular music. I love it. Thank you, sir.

They've been covering this since the 70s always great. You're spot on it's not better or worse it's just there. But to play it with John Bonham's son on drums and in front of the mighty Zeppelin. It's always kind of magical to watch.

Think of the background musicians that play everything at Kennedy center. They are amazing. I messaged a couple of them to say how amazingly talented they are.

The only onus we have is to take what we are given, what we've inherited, and just try to make it a little better. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. That was an acknowledgement of the artist's creation and how the next generation built on it. We learn. We grow. We produce. We lead. Than we die. Peace.
