Self-esteem, the Power to Change Your Fate
Josephine Kim, professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education
There was a girl from Korea who immigrated to Chicago with her parents when she was eight. She did not speak a word of English. She was silent in school, and her classmates did not welcome the strange little girl into their fold. Then in fourth grade, she met a teacher who cared. With hard work and attention from the teacher, she mastered English in 6 months and became an outgoing child.
The young girl was Josephine Kim, who grew up to become a professor at Harvard′s Graduate School of Education, mental health consultant, and expert on school violence. Josephine Kim has counseled and treated teachers, parents and students around the world for over 15 years. In that time, she′s come to realize the importance of ′self-esteem.′ She′s here to tell us more on this week′s [Heart to Heart].

Interesting talk and informative but I think she is romanticizing 80s US culture. We know that what is represented on TV is often not what actual occurs in reality. Many fathers during this time showed little emotional interest in their kids...this is not specifically a Korean thing but gendered behavior that often cuts across many patriarchal societies.
