Heartbreak On A 180+" Buck, How Rye Got A Bow Shot On A Small Property #hunting #deerhunting
On this week's episode of Midwest Whitetail, we take a dive back into the 2023 bow season where Rye Ludwig got had an opportunity at tagging a once in a lifetime buck. First, we dive back and look at the history of the farm; Kaleb Greiner has had permission on the piece for many years and, setting his sights elsewhere for the 2023 season, offered Rye the opportunity to hunt it. Going into hunting season, Rye had only hunted the farm once in 2022 and had minimal firsthand intel on how deer used the property. Initially, targeting a mature tight framed buck named "Tight 10," the plan was to construct two small Monsterbuck green plots in an area of a corn field where deer damage was severe. The plot would hopefully create a draw to deer thus putting them in bow range, and along with that came the identification of a great stand location overlooking the green plot. As the season goes on, a giant shows up on the farm and chess match for both bucks takes off from there. We hope you enjoy the episode and as always thank you for the support week in and week out!

Great episode. I’ve lost a few in the Midwest… hit a giant 160-170+ back and 2 miles of blood trailing/jumping him. Have some footage of him before the shot…it also haunts me to this day.I know several others that have lost gross booners with a bow. There will be more - use it to learn from and inspire you to get that next opportunity on a giant.

I couldn’t have said that better myself. I can’t wait for next season. I learned a ton this year. That’s one of my favorite things about hunting, the constant learning and different situations you find yourself in. There’s no sense in pouting about bad outcomes, just extract what you can you make yourself better moving forward.

I don't know what it is about this hunt @21:00 but it made me wish turkey season was over and that we were back to the absolute best time of the year. Goodness gracious Rye! Awesome story and awesome video showing that not everything goes perfectly. Still there's so much to learn if not more in those occurrences than when it all goes right. Here's to redemption in '24, it's your year!

That’s the truth! The good thing is knowing that the shot wasn’t lethal and having the deer back on camera a couple days later. I’d like to think I practice a lot but one of my major goals this year is to shoot my bow more throughout the year. Hopefully with Owen! Thanks for checking out the show Aaron and it was a pleasure meeting you this spring sir!

Dang! You guys have been holding out on me lol. Heck of a story Rye. Wish it had ended in your favor but it's not that easy unfortunately. Especially with the added complication of filming.

That’s all part of the experience. I think most bow hunters have a story like this one in their hunting career and the silver lining is I did learn a lot through the entire season. I’m glad you enjoyed the story and I can’t wait for October!

So if you can do it all over agian, would you have drew back before you stopped him? Because he looked right at you when you drew back. That can make a person rush the shot.

Man! This is something I’ve thought about constantly. I think number one for me is just not self filming in that situation. You’re spot on with him alerting to the end of my draw cycle but In that moment I was settling on my pin. I never realize the deer alerted until after I got to look at the footage. The arrow went where I wanted to but unfortunately the deer ducked. In that exact situation the only thing I think I would change is to be a bit more observant of what the deer is doing while I’m settling into my peep. Thanks for checking out the show!

If you did it again would you have camera mounted in tree differently? Maybe your right side under arm? I think self filming maybe prevented you from getting shot off sooner. Great job though filming it so well. Appreciate it!
@ryeludwig917
@ryeludwig917 2 месяца назад
If I could have I would have. I went in that morning with a different plan of where to mount the camera but the curve of the tree unfortunately would not let that happen. I probably spent 30 minutes just trying to find a spot to put the camera arm that morning that would allow the best overall self filming setup. Ideally yes I would have had it on the right side but ya gotta make it work sometimes! I appreciate the compliment as well. At the end of the day I love running a camera almost as much as deer hunting itself and I take a lot of pride in the final product. Thank you for taking the time to reach out and I'll do my best to bring the story full circle next season!

Dan Moore, that’s “Overcast” from Monster Buck Food Plot Seed. As you can see, it worked really well for Rye. I’ll drop a link below and you can check out that specific mix. They have a seed blend for just about everything so while you’re at it, give them all a look. Thanks for watching man! monsterbuck.com/products/overcast
