Mike's NEW Hunting Property: The Good, The Bad, and The Challenging #hunting #deerhunting
On this week's episode of Midwest Whitetail, we kick things off in Iowa with Zach Rozmus on Area 52. Area 52 is where Zach spent most of his 2023 hunting season and one improvement he aimed to make was increased cover and habitat on the access lane for his farm. Bringing us up to speed, Zach dives into the success of the project and how he believes the ‪@GreatPlainsAg‬ drill made a large difference for him. Following that, as promised we join Mike Reed on the brand new hunting property we've talked about for the past month. After completing many projects so far that required time of year attention, Mike finally has the time to walk us through covering the good, the bad, and the challenging. This 76 acre property has tons to offer a deer hunter and Mike dives into why. Next, we join Kaleb Greiner in southern Iowa who's been busy planting the ‪@monsterbuck‬ Screen mix for the upcoming hunting season. Kaleb offers his insight on how this will benefit the deer hunting, how he approaches planting the seed itself, and offers a few other tips to keep in mind if you'll want to take a crack at planting the seed yourself. Following this, Owen Reigler gives us a great archery tip on how to properly draw your bow. One that not only will improve your daily shooting as it pertains to target practice in preparation for hunting season, but during the fall for that once in a lifetime chance. Finally, we take a look at a quick video from our great friends at ‪@uchuntingproperties‬ who have a dynamite, ready to hunt property located in southern Iowa. As always, we greatly appreciate you taking the time to watch another episode of Midwest Whitetail and we hope to see you back next week!

Needs more plotters doing this native work! It’s so beneficial to wildlife. So diverse, and it’s great stewardship. There are more than just deer to feed and house!

Digging the new dirt Mike, be fun to follow along this season. We just closed on our new 60 a month ago North Missouri outside kirksville, new projects already taken place. Should be a good year

The new farm looks to have great opportunity. I’m curious why the N/NW side doesn’t stand out as a good stand location? It seems like the draw on the N side (neighbors) would be good bedding and the trees leading S to the center food plot would be a good location for deer movement. Easier access for a stand as well. Excited to follow the plan come together on it.

I do think there are some good spots along the north side but there is quite a bit more hunting pressure along that property line or at least what I perceive as likely hunting pressure. There are multiple stands along the fence line so I’d rather just stay away and start elsewhere. The west side is the road and where they surveyed off a few acres with the house. Someone does have permission to hunt the few acres behind the house so it’s another area I’m more likely to avoid because of that. I will learn a lot as I spend time out there. Things certainly may unfold differently than I imagine it. Thanks for watching

Just starting the video but I have a question that I don’t think is too related to what this video is going to consist of. Want to ask early in hopes of a better chance to get a response. How do you guys feel about the new regulations with trail cameras in Iowa? Thanks guys!

Karson, thanks for being here man! I wanted to hop on here and answer this personally. On the note of trail cameras and the changes in Iowa, we will discuss this at the appropriate time. The public land changes are notable for sure but as it pertains to any other "change," it's still grey as far as what will be actually issued inside of the '24 hunting regulations for Iowa. As far as I read it, nothing actually changed. You've never been able to use trail cameras to assist in an active deer hunt along with many other forms of technology. That's what the Iowa DNR are aiming to clarify. As I read that, that doesn't at all say that trail cameras cellular or otherwise can't be used on private land to scout outside of the hunt. Again, that's grey and up for interpretation. So, what I will be doing is once that 2024 book of regulations and seasons is published, I will reach out to my local DNR officers and work together with him to make sure I operate this fall in accordance with their understanding/interpretation of using trail cameras during Iowa's hunting seasons. I know this isn't much of an opinion but I don't think it's responsible to have one until that point in time.

@@JoshSparksMW Thanks for the response Josh! I live in Illinois so it doesn’t affect me but I feel that a law/regulation like it will eventually come into effect here sometime in the near future! Was definitely asking more out of the curiosity of how grey it is and if it would affect any story telling for the Iowa MWW crew! Love what you guys do!

Mike, why kill off the sparse corn in that bean plot? Is that for ease of filming? I’ve always preferred the breakup so the deer can’t see everything at once. Easier to force a buck to work through the plot when he can’t see everything at a glance. Just curious how you see it.

@MidwestWhitetailVideos 13 дней назад
Great question Truman! It’s definitely an option to leave it but for one it takes away nutrients out of the soil and generally volunteer corn won’t ear out at the capacity that it normally would in crop. Also, most of the time in my experience, they don’t ear out at all. On top of that, who doesn’t love a clean food plot! It’s by no means the only option, but it’s what we like to do with our plots! Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! We hope you enjoyed the episode! -Rye
