The key for me was when he asked John if he should let him go and John said "Why would you do such a foolish thing". The character wanted it to be over. The poignant moment was when Paul asked what he should tell god when he was being judged and John said tell him you done a kindness. This is such a moving movie. If a person does not cry watching this, I have wonder if they are human at all.

I love that Melinda gave him that medallion after John healed her. - St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers and against sudden death, many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a sheperd's staff in one hand. Fits John Coffey.

Urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria in the urethra and they can be quite painful. Imagine a constant burning sensation, feeling as though you had to pee really badly all the time, but every time you try it feels like passing broken glass or "razor blades" as Paul said in the film. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the bladder and kidneys. Every time I watch this movie I feel so grateful that if I get sick I get to see a doctor in 2021 and not 1935 lol

@pauldonohew3084
@pauldonohew3084 2 года назад
You are correct in that. In 1935 cillian based drugs were not as widely used. Sulpha based were the norm. They took a long time to work and most tended to vomit constantly while taking the drug. Which is why treatment was often put off for so long. As is the case with Paul.
@chriskelly3481

Drinking lots of cranberry juice is also a legit treatment for UTIs. But let's face it. Paul is WAAAY past bloody juice or sulphur. Poor bastard needs industrial strength antibiotics.... or 'something' else??? 🤔😆
@eyden1562
@eyden1562 2 года назад
BIG side note, if you ever get a UTI make sure to see a doctor immediately. If it spreads to the kidneys, you can develop sepsis relatively fast and can be fatal. 👌
@eyden1562
@eyden1562 2 года назад
@@chriskelly3481 The problem with telling people than "cranberry juice" will treat a UTI is that most people will go buy cranberry "cocktail" which is sold in most stores. It won't help, in fact the sugar will likely worsen the condition. Apple cider vinegar is a good home remedy as well, however if the UTI spreads to/past the bladder, the actual UTI symptoms may reduce and you'll think you're better when the infection is in fact just spreading. The best course of action is definitely to see a doctor and start on prescribed antibiotics, for sure lol.

Paul was going to let John escape but John wanted to end his pain. He felt Del's pain during his horrible execution. Said his pain was like glass in his head and he felt that all the time. He was happy walking to his execution. It was what John wanted. This was in the 1930s or 1940s. The prison system 80-90 years ago was different than today. They probably didn't have an option of a stay of execution granted by the governor. This is a heart wrenching movie. The Angel was Michael Clarke Duncan.

They didnt let him die because of his colour. In fact aside from Percy, they were all good men. John Coffey wanted to die as he had seen too much of the worse side of human nature. Yes, it is strongly implied that he is an angel.
@GreenParlour0749

In the book it was stated the reason they couldn’t do anything for him was because of his colour. The judge in that area wouldn’t believe he was innocent, and neither would the Sheriff. You are correct none of the guards, except Percy, cared what race their prisoners were. To them a criminal was a criminal but still a human and Coffey was innocent and a miracle so it hurt them to execute him.

For those who were/are saying that race is not a factor here- consider: there is a reason why Stephen King chose to set this story, with this character, in the 1930’s South. And consider too that in filming this movie, knowing perfectly well that it was all just performance, the actor Michael Clarke Duncan has said that the scene where the mob comes to arrest John Coffey, still scared him _on every take._ It is very true that the guards had no evidence that would stand up in court, and no one would have believed them. And yes it is entirely possible that the ultimate outcome would have been the same if John Coffey were white. But the book does touch on the fact, implicit in the movie, that the justice of that era (if indeed in any) was not colorblind.
@StoryMing
@StoryMing 2 года назад
EXCERPTS FROM THE BOOK: _[The Dettericks had a dog, which did not bark when the girls were abducted because the perpetrator kept it quiet by feeding it- before breaking its neck; a plan which John Coffey could neither have thought up nor carried out]_ “...but if Coffey opened his lunch and fed the sausages to the dog, how’d he tie the newspaper back up again with that butcher’s twine? I don’t know when he even would have had the chance, but leave that out of it, for the time being. This man can’t even tie a simple granny knot.” There was a long moment of thunderstruck silence, broken at last by Brutus. “How come no one brought that up at the trial?” “Nobody thought of it,” I said, and found myself again thinking of Hammersmith... who liked to think of himself as enlightened, *_Hammersmith who had told me that mongrel dogs and Negroes were about the same, that either might take a chomp out of you suddenly, and for no reason._* Except he kept calling them _your_ Negroes, as if they were still property- but not _his_ property. ... *_”Nobody was really equipped to think of it, Coffey’s own attorney included._* ...I wouldn’t have thought of it either, if I hadn’t put together what he told Deputy McGee that day with what he said after he cured my infection, and what he said after he healed the mouse.” _[the Deputy’s response, when Paul Edgecombe comes around asking questions and making inquiries- and finds out that William Wharton had worked for the Dettericks]_ “It proves nothing, you know that don’t you? ...And if you're thinking of getting him a new trial on the basis of this one thing, you better think again, _seńor._ John Coffey is a Negro, *_and in Trapingus County we’re awful particular about giving new trials to Negroes.”_* _[the crew explaining to Jan- Paul’s wife- why they can do nothing to help John]_ “...[Wharton] being there in May doesn’t mean he came back and killed those girls in June,” Brutal said. “…On the one hand you got this fellow who helped paint the Dettericks’ barn and then went away. Turns out he was committing crimes all over the place, but there’s nothing against him for the three days in May he was around Tefton. On the other hand, you’ve got this big Negro, this _huge_ Negro, that you found on the riverbank, holding two little dead girls, both of them naked, in his arms.… ...[Deputy] McGee might have his doubts but McGee doesn’t matter. [Sheriff] Cribus is the only one who can re-open the case, and Cribus *_doesn’t want to mess with what he thinks of as a happy ending-_* ‘it was a nigger,’ thinks he, ‘and not one of our’n in any case. Beautiful, I’ll go up there to cold Mountain have me a steak and a draft beer it then watch him fry, and there’s an end to it.’”... “All [the Deputy] can do by standing up to him is lose his job,” I said. “Yes I think that in his heart he knows it was Wharton. But what he says himself is that, if he keeps his mouth shut and plays the game until Cribus either retires or eats himself to death he gets the job. And things will be different then… *_And he’s probably not so much different than Homer about one thing. He’ll tell himself, ‘After all, it’s only a Negro. It’s not like they’re going to burn a white man for it.’”_*

@@pullmyfinger336 Please focus on the statement made, she isn’t talking about real life. She quoted the book. To identify an EVIL is not to be consumed by evil. Don’t spread that ignorance. I call out rapists, drunk drivers, murderers and racists - that is not obsession. It is a moral and legal duty. Racism was glaring in the film. It was in the book and Story Ming shared it in the comments. So let people be. If you don’t see it even when the author has clearly spelt it out is his book - then the problem is you. People can talk about racism in books as fiction or non-fiction. The point is was it in the book. And @storyming showed that it was. Period.

@StoryMing 2 года назад
Also, realize that none of this is to say that the _message of either the film or book itself_ is promoting or condoning racism. It is not. -If anything, it is *_critiquing_* it. Essentially all that the story is doing is acknowledging that racism exists, and that it is wrong. It does not obsessively focus on it, or go out of the way to hammer the point home. It simply mentions it as a part of the reality of the world they are living in (and which, by the way, NOT ONE of the good-guy, likable characters endorses). If anyone finds that problematic, I would ask them to think very hard about _why_ that is.

The problem with the UTI was that this was in 1935 when antibiotics weren't as available as they are now, and in rural areas like where Paul lived doctors also weren't as available and there was a macho culture (even more than now) among men that led them to resist going to doctors. That's why Paul's wife gave him a frustrated look when he admitted he hadn't been to see the doctor. It was bad becaue he was trying to tough it out and left it a long time. As for how serious untreated UTIs can be, they can progress to a kidney infection which can be fatal.

You have to understand that although Paul feels guilty for John's death, he's not to blame; he offered to set him free. But John wanted to die. He was tired of all the ugliness of this world; he was too good for this world. And John decided for himself that it was time for him to leave this world.

I loved this viewing because I believed it was a real reaction. And she is so smart. She even picked up on 'it's like he dropped out of the sky'. John Coffey is an angel. It explains everything. And she even finally got that. She should also see The Legend of Bagger Vance. She really interests me because she's so perceptive.

All the prisoners crimes were laid out in the book, which is one of the best books I've ever read. Arlen Bitterbuck was sentenced to death for killing someone over a pair of boots in an extremely violent bar fight. Eduard Delacroix was convicted of raping and killing a young girl, then trying to cover up his crime by burning her body. The fire was near an apartment building that caught on fire and killed six more people, including two children.

I am so confused about the idea of racism even being introduced. John was discovered with 2 dead little girls in his hands. Anyone would have been prosecuted and sentenced as John was, regardless of race. Knowing he was innocent but unable to prove it had nothing to do with his race. I just don't understand how it enters the picture?

Powerful movie with an incredible cast impeccably directed. You need to read the book (which in fact was released in booklets - that is every few months King had the book come out in sections - eventually published into a full novel). How can one not be moved by this film? Great choice & reaction hon.

If anything, I feel the subject of John Coffey's race was pretty much ignored in this movie, for it being 1935 Louisiana. For one thing I doubt John would have even made it to jail, much less gotten a trial. That search party would have lynched him where they found him. Plus I think the warden would have been a lot more upset about John climbing into bed with his wife and looking like he was kissing her.

There was no slavery in 1935. Everyone on the green mile was convicted of murder or they wouldn't be there. You missed when Coffey said he was trying to take it back, but it was too late, when he was found with the girls. They tried to help Coffey, but he turned then down. Coffey wanted it to be over. They couldn't prove he didn't do it anyway.

Great reaction! 😊 One of my favourite Stephen King adaptions. Directed by Frank Darabont, who seems to have a good grasp on King’s work, unlike many others, you could argue 😉 I remember when I first read The Green Mile, when it was first released as a sort of serial, where you could not wait to get the next part of the story! 😊 I think the story works on many levels, but partly, I think it revolves around the concepts of good and evil. The character of Percy, is evil, yes, but of a cowardly nature. He tries and pretends, yet when confronted with true or a more chaotic evil, represented by William Wharton, he cowers, and hides. And we have the innocence and purity, of John Coffey…we still cry for you John, all of us! I grieve for how much the world hurt you, while you blessed us with your presence, here! ☹ Paul Edgecomb, I feel, tried to be a good man, working what must have been a very difficult job, back then, trying to do your best to retain your sense of human decency. Rewatching this film, I’m once again touched by all the regrets that seemed to still haunt him, even after all those years. Thank you for this reaction; it was good to experience this movie once again, despite the sadness 😊

1. YOU WILL CRY 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production so his part was done later. 3. Goof: In 1935 black and white inmates were not kept in the same prison., 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for two Oscars. Best supporting actor(MCD) and best cast. Sadly they didn't win. 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. 7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegetarian and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. 10 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. 11. 4 words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!
