I always felt for Jenny. She felt dirty due to her childhood abuse, and Forrest was always so pure. She was terrified that she’d taunt that purity so she held him at arms length until she had her own child and grew emotionally enough to understand that she wasn’t broken. She was healing.

That moment won Tom Hanks the Oscar. Is he smart, or is he... And he can't even finish the sentence. He's so choked up he can't even say the words. It is the first and only time we see Forrest at a loss for words. And we see for the first time that in spite of everything momma tried to do to make him feel OK, Forrest didn't want his child to face the same challenges he faced. It's a heartbreaking moment after all we have seen Forrest go through. That moment won the Oscar for Hanks and for the whole movie in my opinion.

its an incredible movie. Everyone falls in love with Forrest so fast. Many get so angry with Jenny, I appreciate how empathic you were with how her life was portrayed. She just could never accept herself as worthy of Forrests love. It was cute how they fit him into those historic shots.

Jenny is complicated. I could only cry over her. I don’t hate her. A lot of people with hurt do hurt others whether they mean to or not. What they need to do is be kind to themselves and realise how they can use what power they have to make things right in the future. It’s not easy and some people won’t forgive but you can do it.

When Jenny tells Forest he doesn't know what love is, she is actually the one that has never known love. When Jenny tells Forest to run anytime something bad happens, it is because she is always running from her past.

Finally someone who understands that Jenny's not a bad person, just a girl who had to go throught horrible things during her childhood. Things that just psychologicaly destroyed her, destroyed her self confidence, brought her to that self-destructing behaviour she then had. But she knew that Forrest getting close to Forrest would put him in danger, that she could eventually drag him down with her and that her life would obliterate him so she choosed to protect him by not allowing him to get close to her. Only when she had fixed and stabilised her life did she allow herself to get close to him.

Lt. Dan Taylor’s story is sometimes a real representation of how combat veterans think after being injured in the line of duty. The military prepares you for everything it possibly can but can’t teach you how to feel or deal with life after combat is over. They now have resources for active duty veterans returning from combat.I loved this character because he overcomes the guilt of surviving the war, dealing with his new life and disabilities, exercising his demons, and coming out on top anyways! Gary Sinise the actor who played Lt.Dan Taylor does a lot of work for US Service Members and their families through his foundation. He performs with the Lt. Dan Band for the USO for us servicemen and women all over the world.

I believe Vietnam vets in particular had challenges bc of the social climate here… it’s kind of alluded to when Jenny’s boyfriend upon meeting Forrest in uniform, asked “who’s the baby killer?” Contrast with post WWII, there are images from ticker tape parades that everyone recognizes…. sometimes THESE guys would come back and be spit on. And then consider that many of the vets had been drafted - there were many who wouldn’t have gone otherwise. PLUS although PTSD was known about (not sure if it was called PTSD by then or still “shell shock” or “battle fatigue”), the treatment available at the time was lacking. I attended nursing school in the early 2000s, so this is an old statistic, but I remember being told that about 40% of our country’s homeless people were vets. 😢 Shameful.

I think people tend to overlook how she lays everything out for Forrest before she asks him if he would marry her. That he didn't do anthing wrong, that she is sick and I like to think that she had some support in place for Forrest Jr. when she dies. Of couse she hopes (more like knows) that Forrest will take care of their son, but the point is, she doesn't lie, evade or anything. She allows for Forrest to make his own informed decision to marry her.

24:39 I'm a swede and not an american so I haven't seen this, but I think the reason the captain is so angry is not only because he lost his legs, but when the soldiers came home from Vietnam alot of people protested against the war and said it was wrong. The American soliders was not seen as war heroes as they were 1945 when WWII ended. Alot of the american people rejected the soldiers after Vietnam and they became lonely and islolated.

Also there is the whole "member of his family has died in every American war". It is to the point it has become a family tradition. He thought it was his destiny to die in the war. And when he didn't he felt like he had failed. So you have the fact that he lost much of his platoon, And lost his legs top of all that he failed at fulfilling his destiny of dying in the war. Then after he is back home you add the things you talked about.

Most people miss that and decide she's the bad guy in the movie because of how she behaves towards Forrest, even though she's so adamant that running is the only way to deal with problems that it's the literal advice she always gives to Forrest himself: run from bullies, run from danger in Vietnam. Always run. He even tried to run from his heartbreak for three whole years when Jenny left him the last time.

Hey K Maj, I agree with you 100 percent! As you said, the cast did GREAT. Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan is a personal favorite of mine! Forrest Gump had SUCH a pure heart, and he showed the upmost loyalty to those closest to him. I think that is something we can all admire and try to apply in our own lives. Overall, I just find this movie to be very inspirational, and I quote it all the time too! Also, my brother has Autism, which helps me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled). I actually posted a video on my channel back in February that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique. If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to that video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Or-sIiNANYg.html If you don't check it out, no worries at all! Forrest's mom did a magnificent job raising him, she never tried to p4otect him from all he was gonna have to face but prepared him for it, never made him feel like he was different, even when he was and he excelled throughout his life. This is a wonderful movie and you did a fantastic review and reaction. The part with Jenny as a child praying in the cornfield, hits home for me. I know the pain Jenny is feeling throughout her life and was trying to quite her pain through various things that were actually harming her but was only thinking about numbing that pain, yet was glad she had their child, got herself together but hate it was too late. People sometimes don't see the writing on the wall and don't realize how truly precious life is. I think you're not only a very beautiful woman with a flawlessly beautiful complexion, your beautiful heart makes radiates through you and has touched my heart as well.

Hey Bella Vita, I really like your comment! I think the word "Bittersweet" perfectly describes what you are saying here. And the more we can empathize with Jenny's story, the more we can understand her behavior and the decisions she makes throughout her life. This movie just never gets old for me! Each time I watch it, I get a new perspective on something, or am touched by a different moment. Forrest Gump is one of my most quotable movies too! Also, my brother has Autism, which helps me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled). Kudos to Jenny for accepting Forrest as a person. I can relate to Forrest. I was born with facial abnormalities and had to have several major reconstructive surgeries. Some surgeries actually made matters worse. Kids can be cruel, but there was one girl, Danielle, that became my best friend. She was very popular, even became a cheerleader, but told me that her friends in cheer would talk behind her back, and those same girls would try to gossip with her about the other girls. She said that I was the only one she could trust because people can be fake. She went to see me in the hospital for my last major surgery at the children's hospital. She got inspired by that and the other children who were in there for things much worse. She actually is now a nurse for that very children's hospital. No, I didn't marry her, but I have been married to my wife for 10 years. I didn't think it could be possible. And she loves me despite my noticable abnormalities. I guess it's good in a way to grow up with these problems because you can realize who's truly a good friend versus someone that only sees you based upon status. Hold to those who are real.

It was late, but when I saw your reaction for Forrest Gump already up, & knowing full well your genuine heartfelt wonderful reactions & where this movie would take you, I just knew I had to watch! I've seen many other reactions to this movie, & two things are almost always consistent in reactions: 1.) People fall in love with Forrest almost immediately. 2.) Jenny ends up getting a lot of hate for the way she treats Forrest. But it didn't surprise me in the least that your take on her, (despite your anger & exasperation with her near the end) was the most empathetic yet. Jenny was damaged for years! 💔 Jenny's go-to defense mechanism since childhood was to run. I'll expand on an intresting point you brought up during the running segment: I thought it both intresting & a cruel irony that that same advice she'd given to Forrest (to run) worked way differently for him. That's because as you so rightly pointed out, he was trying to fix the problem. He ran towards a solution & healing, whereas Jenny ran from the problems she needed to face in order to get to that healing. I'm tired, but not one bit sorry, as your reaction not only didn't disappoint, but was everything I thought it would be, & then some! ❤

Sometimes when you run, people think you're running away. But often you're running toward a situation where you're the one in control. If you ever do it in life, it's pretty impressive how it shifts the power dynamic.
