As an indigenous person I always loved this movie because I never had a lot of representation that wasn’t a mockery or pushed stereotypes.spirit has a lot in common with indigenous ppl during western expansion and the oppression my ppl faced throughout U.S. history and even still today

Then they ruined the story by putting some girl on him and making him her pet, getting rid of the entire point of the story, and changing the art style by "trying to make it better". They legit ruined the films point and made it some horse girl film.

Can I ask you something? is the animation series Yakari a good representation or stereotypical? I loved the series as a child and hope it did a good job🙈
@Xenosaurian
@Xenosaurian 3 года назад
I don't think worrying about representation should be such a big concern, especially today. I'm not sure what modern representations it is that you find to be "mocking or stereotypical" (noting that stereotypes aren't an inherently bad thing, as we naturally have stereotypes about everything and everyone). It also needs to be noted that Spirit is not an accurate representation of history. That native Americans faced oppression during the Western expansion to North America is clear, but what "oppression" do you imply that native Americans are "still facing today" supposedly?
@mitsukitai2713
@mitsukitai2713 3 года назад
@@Xenosaurian I was gonna go with "you're trolling" as it seems Americans today really aren't aware of the ongoing oppression. But, that invisibility IS a form of racism. Even today we hardly see many indigenous people in popular culture. And representation is still needed and matters. Like, we legit just learned like 2 months ago about mass graves of indigenous children, who were forcibly assimilated into American culture after being abducted from reservations through boarding schools that were designed to 'civilize' them. These boarding schools are directly related to their ongoing opression. You have native women experiencing violence, stalking, sexually assault at 2 to 3 times the national rate, the continued erosion of indigenous culture and way of life, resource exploitation, destruction of sacred lands, worsening environmental and native health, reducing federal resources while crime continues to rise in reservations, traditional plants used for religious purposes being illegal at the federal level (peyote)...it goes on. Also, on the subject of stereotypes? Theyre still harmful. The infamous stereotype about black people and watermelon/chicken? Some of the very few crops/livestock enslaved Africans were allowed to have were those very same things.

Not once have I watched spirit and got through the entire movie without crying. It's so beautiful, everything, animation, soundtrack, dialogue, expressions, storyline. It's criminally underrated istg, I'd even say its close to if not on par with the HTTYD trilogy.

I love this story of a Mustang that meets 3 different types of humans. First he gets captured by the army and is being treated awful, then he meets people that treat him and other horses like they are kinda a family, and after that he gets captured by people that just use him as a slave. I also love the way how they did the communication between the horses in this movie, they didnt need to talk like in other kids show, you can literally understand everything without them actually talking, the facial expression the body language the sounds they make is just beautifuly done for us to understand what they are actually tryna say! Such a good movie man :')

It's not based on a true story exactly, but is based on the history of the western expansion in the US. In recent years, they took Spirit and put him in a girls-and-horses TV series, and recently came out with a new movie based on the series. I'm afraid to watch them, because they seem totally opposed to the whole message of the first movie.

@nonyabusiness3619 3 года назад
I've never seen the (series based) movie, but I've watched all the episodes of the series. It's honestly not bad. The main problem with the show is that it's way too focused on the girls and their problems, and barely focuses on Spirit himself, or even the horse's relationships with the girls, which makes the show kind of boring a lot of the time. While I like the series for what it is, you're not missing much.
@ktmal1681
@ktmal1681 3 года назад
@@nonyabusiness3619 The movie had a clear ending and didn't leave much for them to expand on (which is a good thing in this case). What bothers me is that they took a good idea and pretended to make a continuation of the movie with these shows. All they are doing is using the name and horses to try and sell toys to little girls.....instead of giving a good story on its own or even staying faithful to the original message of the movie which was about freedom and respect. Not to mention the animation itself is so very disappointing, just like the new How To Train Your Dragon show, they are going with the cheapest option to pump out the most.... and it shows.

It’s such an incredible film. The fact they made an animated horse film that wasn’t about young girls or have talking animals and really made it into a piece of art is so incredible to me. Like Spirit narrated it but it wasn’t really about talking animals. It was about the settlement of the West from a wild horse’s perspective that used a rock singer as the voice of the horse. ??? Like how do you even pitch that idea?? But it’s so good! Show me another animated musical or horse movie like it

Another great horse movie like this is Black Beauty from 1994 (not an animation, though). It's set in victorian England and is also told from the perspective of a horse in narration. It follows Black Beauty's life and shows how working horses were treated. Actually it is based on a novel that was written during that time period specifically to address these issues which was far ahead of it's time. It's one of my favorite movies. Definitely check it out if you haven't seen it.

To give Spirit more credit than "It's his first encounter with humans", I think it's a little deeper than that. Think about what he's use to dealing with in the wild. He doesn't understand what humans are capable of at that point, or how they think. He's use to mountain lions that hunt for food, but will leave and pursue easier prey if Spirit and his herd prove too difficult to catch. Physical prowess was the only thing that mattered out in the wild. Up to that point, if he could out fight it or out run it, he was fine, because the thing he was dealing with would give up. Humans don't give up, and even if you can out fight or out run them, they can still beat you by out smarting you. Spirit was wildly unprepared to deal with a threat that doesn't give up once you're out of sight or you've done a bit of damage to them. "Mustang, that's it's name, Mustang." No. Mustang is the name for the type of horse it is. "Is this based on a true story?" Putting aside the fact that this is a Dreamworks movie and the closest thing I can think of to "based on a true story" that Dreamworks ever did is the two movies they had based off religious texts, I'm pretty sure if this were based off a true story, they would have had some text on screen at the start that said "based on a true story".

In terms of horse racing it has its good sides and ofc with the good there’s always a bad. I did horse racing for a few years (specifically barrel and jumps) and my family and I always treat our horses like they were royalty even before I did racing. My moto for anything to do with horses, is to treat them with respect and care because that’s your partner, this isn’t a one man show, you need them no matter what you doing wether it’s racing or just riding on a dirt road. We all retired early due to multiple reasons but they are still very happy now. We still casually do a few little races within our own stable with others who also have horses here. Trust me when I say once a racing horse always one 😂 I think they miss it especially my jumper, I’ll let her into the paddock with our jumps and she’ll do it on her own without a second thought but it’s just not worth the mental toll it takes on you to see everything that goes on. In those short years the amount of abuse that went on behind the scenes is horrific, it’s one of the big reasons I quit, I hated seeing it. I love my horses and I couldn’t understand how some of those riders did the those things to their horses. Their horses didn’t do the jumps or go faster because they wanted to, they were forced to or they’d get punished. Seen it happen way too many times after a race sadly. The industry is filled with horrible riders 😒

They began production in 1994, they created the "tradigital" animation technique to pair CG with traditional animation in order to allow the "camera" to more easily and smoothly move through the world. The soundtrack is Hans Zimmer and Bryan Adams, since Spirit doesn't talk much they used the music to give him his voice and tell his story, it's masterful. The shot following the eagle through the canyon alone took 9 months to create. The horse the animators based Spirit off is still alive, his name is Donner, and he's a Kiger mustang (a very handsome boy). Oh, and Spirit is voiced by Matt Damon. This has been my favourite film ever since it came out. The final goodbye is honestly one of the most powerful moments I've ever watched. Sound the Bugle (the song from the train ride) in combination with my own pony have gotten me through the roughest times in my life. Horses are just special like that, they bring out things in us we never knew existed.

To this day, this is absolutely one of my favorite movies. I don’t often rewatch movies but I could watch this movie over and over again. It made such a vast desolate landscape so incredible beautiful. They way they framed some of the shots. Absolutely breath taking. The visual with the black screen and then the sudden flash of lightning. Absolutely brilliant. I don’t think I’ve see something else quite like it anywhere else in animation. I’m sure the story has it flaws. It could be seen as all over the place or to ambitious but i think they pulled it off well. Like it always amazes me how in such a short time I feel like I’ve see 4 different movies. Like it divided up into 4 separate chapters that have their own unique style and tone and sometimes I left thinking how did I get this far. It feels like such an incredibly long journey in such a short amount of time and I love it. I always find it refreshing to see a movie like this after all the colorful, hyperactive, child humor you see now a days in animation. Not that today they aren’t making great movies but this too me is such a stark difference to the story telling we have today. And maybe I’m not the one who can properly be a judge on this. I’m sure this movie has a tone of inaccuracies. Like the spirit as a horse probably has more than one mate. But I found the native Americans to at least be one of the least offensive representations I’ve seen specially from this time period. Again I’m probably not a great judge of that. But I didn’t feel it was forcing on me some of the heavy stereotypes a lot of Native American portrayals have. Not that it was void of stereotypes. It just came off very neutral not heavily leaning on some of the big flashy stereotypes. And I at least appreciated that. It didn’t feel like it was screaming in my face native Americans. Please correct me if you feel this is wrong. Also interesting how the colonizing frontiersman white man were the ones most portrayed as villains but even towards the end it didn’t feel like it lean so much towards big and guys that need to be stop but ended with respect that one side had won. But yes these are reason why I love this movie so much. Not a huge fan of what they ended up doing with the series in most recent year. Maybe it not that bad if it was a stand alone product but I feel they took something. Notice girls liked it. And made it more girly. And the reason why me, a girl, liked it was because it didn’t feel like it was so focused on being girly. It had a story with depth, emotion, stakes, and was dramatic and you know what a damn good friendship. Not girls in a horse club.

The amount of people seeing this incredible film for the first time astonishes me but also makes me appreciate the fact people get to experience a childhood favorite of mines. I would always watch this film every chance i get and never once was i bored. Still my all time favorite film of mines.

in regards to the visuals of the movie, i watched the Behind the Scenes when i was little (i grew up around horses and have always absolutely LOVED this movie). The visual artists went to actual locations and painted the scenery. If i'm not mistaken, it's watercolor paintings.

Narrated by Matt Damon. Spirit-the stallion Esperansa-his mother Rain-romantic interest I listened to soundtrack on repeat when I went into the military. Bryan Adams is an amazing composer and vocalist. It got me through those 4 years and it's wonderful to see people enjoy the film too. Domesticating (breaking) horses was hard work back then, but I'm glad that it's an abandoned practice. Never forget when dealing with horses they'll spooky easily because they're prey animals, and to always let them know where you are. If all else fails, remember, the front legs will hurt you, but the back legs will kill you.

Just like in this film there's 2 ways to get a horse to obey your commands. Sadly the 1st ways to force it into subjugation by making it believe that you are more powerful than that it must fear you. Secondly and much much better by developing a relationship with a horse and getting it to trust you.

This movie will always have a special place in my heart. My grandfather adored movies about the wild west and when this came out it was something him and I could watch together and bond over, fourteen years later whenever I watch this movie I always look back on the good times my grandfather and I had together when we watched this. My dad and I made it tradition to at least watch this movie once ever year to honor my grandfather

This movie was my childhood! I watched it so often, always rented it on VHS from a video store. I walked down the aisle to 'I Will Always Return' and our first dance was 'Here I Am' 💙 The soundtrack, the visuals, everything is incredible. I always cry when Rain gets shot and Spirit says with her. I absolutely love how much emotion is conveyed through winnies and neighs, even without subtitles, as a child, I knew what Spirit was conveying at the beginning of the film. The pain in his warning when the soldiers catch up to him and he tells the herd to run, and again when his mother starts coming to him, give me goosebumps. I blame this film for my love of animals and it sparked my journey to becoming a veterinarian 💜

I don't know if you have seen it, but there is another movie that Spirit reminds me of. Hidalgo is a movie about a man named Frank Hopkins and his horse Hidalgo, and they are winning horse races all across the USA. They eventually do a race across the Arabian desert called the Ocean of Fire. I hope that you enjoy this suggestion.

also this movie isn't technically based on a true story but it IS based on the cruelty that horses faced in those days. wild horses really were captured and stolen from their homelands and had their spirits broken to make them tame. in the original script, spirit was actually going to be broken by and become the colonel's mount. the movie would have followed a lot more darker story.

God this movie has had such an impact on my life. I saw it in theater when I was 3 with my dad. It kick started my love of art and animation and horses. I'm 24 now I'm graduating with a bachelor's in digital arts so I can make films as beautiful as this. I also have plans to go see the real life horse model they used for the movie this summer. I can't even describe how much this movie means to me.

The horseman Rick Gore of the Think Like A Horse youtube channel exposes the cruelty of horse sports. Jumping, racing, barrel racing the pain caused by bits, spurs, whips and tie down's and how people treat their horses. He is blunt and comes off strong but he is genuine sweetheart, who cares about horses and how we should communicate with them. 😌❤️🐴

The process of training horses is called 'breaking' it can be done like you see in this movie, but a much gentler way is to have your hands on them from birth, throwing empty sacks over their backs from birth and adding weight as they get strong. And slowly as teaching to follow directions. One way teaches an animal to obey through fear, they other way builds trust in humans.
