Rarran is my favorite content creator for Hearthstone and the sole reason I still play this game. And the man is a content creator genius. He is single handedly keeping hearthstone fun for tens of thousands of people when most of the community has moved on. Some would call him pig headed, or stubborn, or masochistic, but the truth is this man could take ANY GAME - any game whatsoever - and he could build a community around it through the sheer force of his personality.
DK must be insane in this. Plague deathrattle minion and Helya to enable the 3 damage to all AoE guy, the Hardcore Cultist for 2 to all, Soulstealer as an 8 mana wipe. Could even drop in a Zola or a Brewmaster to do it again and again. Board clear bully with 0 spells.
Ngl Rarran, I always enjoy watching your videos, I'm one of those lurkers that always watch, enjoy and like the video without ever really saying anything, so I'll say something here. I envy your ability to always find the humor in a situation and being able to make things fun. Thank you for all you do ☺
10:35 you mention that you check your comments first thing in the morning due to a sort of existential dread. This sounds like by doing that you're reinforcing that dread. you're teaching your brain that yes, this is something that is correct b/c you indulge that feeling by checking comments. Oftentimes, our feelings are set by the patterns of actions we take. some examples are Agoraphobia and panic attacks. Agoraphobia often develops from people's habits of not leaving the house due to anxiety, but every time they feel anxious about going out and decide not to or to delay it, they are teaching their brain that "oh, yes i should be scared of this". the feelings of anxiety will only grow worse b/c they indulged in the pattern of activity that feeds into it. and this goes on ad nauseum until it grows out of control. that being said, this is armchair psychology, so you'd know yourself best. this is just something to consider
RU-vid comment on a Hearthstone video is like a step down from armchair psychology. It’s like, park bench with hostile to homeless people armrests psychology.
honestly I find the switching back and forth between perspectives to be a bit overwhelming. I kinda wish it just stayed on one player's perspective the entire game.
At 19:10 I think the concept you're articulating is 'skill expression.' I feel like skill expression, or rather lack thereof, is one of the biggest fundamental issues with competitive/pvp card games. We love to play these games for the fun, wacky popoff moments where the stars align and an incredible synergy or combo becomes possible DESPITE the inherent RNG of drawing random cards from a large deck, but attempting to discern a 'better player' from small sample sizes of matches just doesn't make sense especially considering the current landscape of the popular titles. In my opinion, DECKBUILDING is THE standout feature of card games that allows for the most player autonomy and creativity--which WOULD constitute skill expression if not for the prevalence of net-decking and data-based optimizations of tier-listed META decks that swarm competitive ladders. Not saying people shouldn't net deck and play hard, (hell, I do it) but I genuinely think that your videos with restrictive deckbuilding rulesets, like this one, are so enjoying and refreshing to watch because of how much agency you have in creating your WEIRD decks for the format. :) I think a game like Slay The Spire, albeit a single player card game, is such a standout and fun game because there is so much room for skill expression via constant deckbuilding decision points, and I would love to see more of it on your channel! Long post incoming. Good does not always equal fun. There are always bad matchups, and that is a major part of Hearthstone's gameplay. Playing good decks against other good decks can be done in standard or wild. Winning is fun, having a challenging game or interesting interactions is more fun to me. Being either side when one person's deck fails for some reason isn't fun. It isn't a challenge to beat a practice dummy, and it isn't fun to be that helpless target. I take more stock in top comments than individual ones. My rationale watching this video was; how many negative comments are there compared to how many upvotes on positive ones. Even discounting the Symphony of Sins or other ones as teasing, upvote counts on those are significantly higher than those on knee-jerk complaints. Sometimes, an individual manages to concisely say what others are thinking. Agreeing with that and following it isn't a bad thing, it only shows how strong that thought is. It's much more a personal like/dislike button for the video. Bear with this comparison. Individual comments are the sea/outside world. No one has the same use for everything there. Yet some things in it like specific aspects of the ocean such as fish, are valuable enough to humans to retrieve/study/generally agree are useful. If negative comments gain traction, then there might be an issue. Otherwise, top comments will show you what the most people think, that is its purpose. You can search/ask for specific stuff like you did with positive comments. Speaking of: I think Eddy has a great understanding of classes and combining packages to make decks. I think he should have tried to make Rogue(Shaman) work, because that is his class. It works for him. I don't think spell-less Rogue is great, but I think it might have lasted longer. I love seeing him in content ❤ Rarran, your commitment to making fun challenges on RU-vid is the reason I'm watching. I like Hearthstone, it's a fun implementation of a card game. Your content is fun to watch. You seem to like the game and want to play it, yet have enough knowledge/time invested in it that generic challenges aren't appealing. It is a struggle to continue making content and you keep nailing it. Your willingness to involve the community is amazing, both RU-vid creators and comments. As a suggestion for future challenges: have you made it to Companions in MtG? They're a lot like Genn and Baku, and there is an even/odd variant, but some would make decent challenges. I think Eddy would be great to do another Expansion series with. Your immediate experience contrasts with his of the game. Maybe with a spin win or lose, and switching the extra packs for winning out for an extra spin of the wheel? It would add some variety and help balance out any outstanding decks. Eddy could then do the same thing, and eventually there could be a small tournament of people/top decks playing each other. Getting 4 people would allow for a small one, and more social fun. 8+ would allow for a small meta within the tournament, not being exposed to every deck lends an element of surprise to the outcome.
Look at a Rarran try-harding... ...which he should do tbh because what's the alternative? Read Eddy's mind? Compare notes? Build a bad deck on purpose and hope he did the same? Sometimes this is just how it turns out; it's no big deal. And you can always revisit a format later.
I enjoy these vids but like Eddie is trying to play a Frenzy-Ogre deck while you're over here with Unholy DK...it ain't a fair match up. Play something silly to balance it out, like Beast Druid or a deck with minions that solely generate/cast spells. Also to balance it out with something nice, you make great content and should keep doing it. I really enjoy the expansion series. It also has potential for you to keep restarting it once you're caught up since you and whoever else you have to play against will always get different cards from the last time you did the series.
Here is an idea for a challenge: Play Hearthstone Yugioh Style. You have to play as much cards as possible every turn. For example: At 3 mana you're forced to play the three one-cost-cards instead of one three-cost-card. Basically you dump as much cards from your hand onto the board as possible. This challenge can be advanced to "do as many interactions per turn as possible". In that way the hero power can be counted as an action.
I think commentors deserve to be shadowbanned from the comment section for being disproportionately toxic. Not for any particular opinion, but for refusing to write that down with a minimum of respect. Because it's been shown many many times that it's actually a very small proportion of people that do that. There's no redeeming factor to entertain that behavior in your community. I have to say though. your takes on league's inherent fun are massive copium... It's only fun if you have a team to cooperate with. And they completely destroyed playability of roles, you only got tank and adc (anti-tank) in the game now.
Hey Rarran, good morning. I hope the day you've woken up and are checking your comments first thing to read this (deranged behavior but kinda based tbh) is a good one. I'd say you look fantastic but I can't be sure if you're still in bed, take a shower and you'll be looking and feeling incredible for the day.
You gotta remember that a lot of people who comment either haven't seen the whole video, or even half of it, or a third, so what they say is not very relevant. I wish creators could see the timestamp of the comments people leave, like "this comment was left while video was at 2:23", you know? It's like people who rave about a certain video game or movie being amazing, terrible, offensive, masterpiece whatever the fuck else and then later you find out, FROM THEM, that they have never seen or played it, which is most people who do shit like that.
Even ignoring the symphony of sins in game 3, I'm kinda confused why spell generators were allowed in a "minion-only" video. Rarran won the first 2 games both with spells, which just feels a bit off.
Rarran complaining about only getting mean comments, while simultaneously being the only reason I still care about HS at all :D Dude, you could misplay every day all day, but you still create awesome content in the end. And considering how you can get to high legend with ease, you can objectively say you're good at the game. The real reason you see plenty of mean comments is that you're so popular even cringe people watch you 😂
Typical Raran cheating in his own challenge FIRST GAME too.... using a forbiden card to end his opponent. I think he should loses this challenge by default :v
idea: how about instead of building all three decks at the same time, you craft them between games. That way, you could improve your 2nd deck by learning from the first game or taking influence from your opponent. As well, I believe it would make for better content if you could add a card that you forgot to add in deckbuilding but which you remember during the first game.
I haven't cared about hearthstone in 10 years. When your challenge videos popped up on my recommendations I watched it, enjoyed it, and have been watching your channel ever since. Keep up the great content. Also love the collabs on magic the noah. ❤
Btw the doomsayer in the beginning was killable by Eddy if the magnetize 1/1 would have been rush, poisonous or windfury. I'd say that were decent odds to try going for it.
To me writing proper comments take a fair bit of effort, but backsearing the missplays is a whole lot easier. At the end of the day though, its just a game, and watching you struggle and laugh your way through is honestly always a good time. so keep having fun, and dont let the comments get to you. We wont leave you cause you threw for content by accident.
Raran I feel like people don't comment positive stuff mainly because they don't feel the need to, the people who enjoy the video will generally just move on with their day. There's definitely a large majority of people who enjoy your content but don't comment, like me.
Well about the negative comments, we have a negativity bias so we are always gonna focus on the bad more than the good. Even though you've gotten legend etc. your videos seems to be content oriented more than someone who relies on pure high level gameplay like a lot of creators. Im guessing this will mean even more backseating, but I think focusing on how much positive reception you get should balance things out. Great content as per!

Eddy is too chill in this video. Moment when he exactly read the state of game on 17:15 and after that makes worst possible play is so cringy tbh. Even without infernal warlock with so many cards in hands definitely will have way to heal himself and you still have no direct damage
