Heartstopper - 1x08 "Boyfriend" - REACTION & DISCUSSION! 

Is this video an hour long? Yes. Did I talk for 40 mins after the episode ended? Also yes. Basically, its a long fucking video.

I love the fact the while Nick was confused and unsure of his sexuality for quite a while, he was always sure about how he felt about Charlie. Such a beautiful message there to follow your heart. ❤️

Nick's "Oh my god I like you so much. And I love liking you." gets me because Ben liked Charlie, but he hated liking Charlie, hated what that meant about himself. That's what's lovely about Charlie and Nick. Also if I was the reason someone (possibly 2 someones) started questioning their sexuality I would be WAY more smug about it than Charlie is 😅

“you’re my favorite person” has to be one of the best declarations in any of these sort of romantic climaxes of any show. Just so beautiful.

I think we tend to forget that Charlie didn't tell any of his friends about Ben, Nick is the only one with that additional insight. So Tao has no way of knowing how deeply wounded Charlie already is.

I know it seems silly that Charlie asked if this means that they are now boyfriends, but he thought he and Ben were boyfriends and Ben crushed him. So I think it was natural that he wanted conformation from Nick

There's so many comparisons of Nick and Ben, but my favourite has got to be the one about Charlie asking if they're boyfriends. With Ben, he sort of assumed they are and Ben crushed that, acted as if Charlie was crazy for even thinking it. Ben made it very clear he did NOT want to be Charlie's boyfriend. With Nick, Charlie is scared to assume that, so when he hesitantly asks Nick, he's already thinking about how Ben reacted. But Nick finds it crazy that Charlie even has to ask. To Nick, they didn't have to establish anything, it was already a given, and that's why he's so confused. Basically, Nick Nelson ruined all of us.

In the graphic novels it is a bit more obvious how much time passes. But sometimes you can see the dates on the phones, when they are reading texts. So it starts on January the 4th (with everyone saying happy new year, and asking about christmas). When Nick and Charlie first text after the Ben thing, it is the first of February (says Charlies gay panic screen). And the first kiss is at the end of March (The sunday after, is the 21nd of March , again Charlies screen.) . As I said it's easier to follow in the graphic novels... Charlies birthday is at the end of April. So concidering that the milkshake/concert date is after that, it has actually been months since they met. But I totally get what you mean.

The feeling you're describing is "hangover", very well know in book community. It's usually after finishing a good book - like you're stuck in that world and can't move forward

My favorite part or (one of) of the series is that there’s no gay trauma inflicted by the parents. They’re all accepting and supporting and that’s that reflects the positivity and uplifting nature and confidence in the characters

With Tao and Elle, you also have to remember that Tao is straight and was friends with Elle when she was a boy. There's definitely a perspective shift that has to happen.

Best scenes: Glad you mentioned Nick and Imogen on the bench. I think that was Kit's single best acted scene of the series, which is saying something, because so many of his scenes were awesomely acted. He BETTER win some awards or I'm gonna have to kick some asses.

Re: Timeline…..it’s there but you have to pay attention. Beginning is the beginning of January after Christmas break, early January….first week? Scene with Ben where where the assault takes place- beginning of February. Charlie says it’s February and the Insta chat later that evening is dated February 1 on Charlie’s phone. Mid term is mentioned in the teacher asking Elle to try to make a friend. One week before midterm. Tao tells Charlie about Nick having a girlfriend where Charlie tells him he and Nick having been hanging out during half term break. April sometime? First kiss happens shortly after that at Harry’s party. Book readers know that Harry’s birthday is April 17. At this point Nick and Charlie have known each other 3.5 months and this is when their official relationship begins. After that it’s spring and depending when the school year ends for UK schools, US schools vary between mid May to mid June, that’s when Sports Day happens.

It is my understanding that the writers put the line about being born n the 18th century in because of Olivia's Oscar winning role as the bisexual, 18th century, Queen Ann, in The Favorite.

I actually think the short length of the episodes protected the series from the excessive drama trap.

You can clearly see from episode one that Tao absolutely ADORES Elle as a person. And I agree with you with the ‘he was too busy with the Charlie friendship thing’ he didn’t really have time to process his new feelings for Elle. But it’s very obvious how comfortable she makes him feel because she’s so good at bringing him down to earth and he’s obviously also very protective of her. Also maybe it partly has to do with her leaving school because Tao realises how much he really misses her and how much he values their connection.

I’m just here to tell you that I love the fact that you pause to share your thoughts, I’ve seen lots of reactions videos where they miss what’s going on for not pausing. So keep doing it, please!

There is a look in Nick's face when Charlie turns him down for lunch that is almost panic stricken. I actually felt really bad for Nick this episode with the way Charlie was treating him. Charlie was not talking to him and basically making decisions in their relationship without involving Nick which wasn't fair to Nick who was having an equally hard time. Just shows that truly communicating as partners is key. Also I might be biased as I would really like a Nick in my life lol :D Also I literally have been rewatching this since Sept 4th because it just gives me so much warmth. This is probably been the best thing I have ever watched hands down.

When you said it’s been 15 minutes and I’m still processing I totally understand. I think this shows that lgbtq media doesn’t have to be horrible, stereotypical, or even homophobic to be popular. It’s so real to so many queer peoples’ experiences, and when the teacher described how he handled things as a child shows how much having that example and mentor to show you it’s okay to be yourself and you shouldn’t let other people dictate that for you, that struck a cord with me. Love the show, love watching your reactions, and can’t wait for season 2!

The show spans from January to mid May. At the end of episode 1 Charlie mentions to Ben that it's February. Besides that you'd have to check the dates on their phones.

I LOVE the little nod Nick does after saying "He's my boyfriend." It's like he's thinking "ok, the hardest part is done, keep going". Kit's acting choices are perfect.

The book that is from Tori’s perspective is called Solitare and there IS a scene that does affect Nick and Charlie in that book. It takes place during volume 4 of the Heartstopper Graphic novel, so it will spoil some stuff that happens later in the story of Heartstopper. You would currently be able to read volume 1 and 2. Those are the volumes that are adapted in season 1.

Having now watched all 8, I'd have to say it's officially a tie between you and Brand Evans for best Heartstopper reaction series. I think your answer on Ben/Bash having a redemption is the universal one. It's worth tolerating Ben to keep Bash around. Doesn't hurt that it will probably help keep the lead stars happy too...

Welp.... Time to rewatch this series for the like 200th time 🤣

For the timeline, there are actually quite a few elements that tell you about the passing of time but I guess they are easy to miss. I think the only blurry one is between 5 & 6 and between 6 & 7. At the beginning of the show, people at school are removing christmas decorations and you can see the date written on Charlie's phone, January. In episode 2, the teacher tells Elle she should try to make friends before the end of term and Charlie talks about spending all his holidays with Nick. Then episode 3, 4 and 5 are pretty close to each other in terms of time passing. Then it's a lil blurry and between 7 and 8 not a lot of time passes. It all happens in the same week. Plus, you can clearly see the seasons passing. There's snow in ep 2 and in 8 it is almost summer. But yeah, i think it's confusing because the time passes in a non linear way.

The fact that im watching this less then 2 dags before the next season is coming out is amazing

Watching HEARTSTOPPER a 2nd and 3rd time (and more) is even more enjoyable because you don't suffer with the anxiety of what is going to happen next and you get to pick up on stuff you missed the first and second time. I can't wait for season 2.

i love this episode so much. a lot of it (including all of sports day) was not in the original comic and i love how well they handled the changes. sports day is one of my favorite moments in the series.

A show that is KINDA like Heartstopper that I’d recomend is Our Flag Means Death. Just like heartstopper it’s a lighthearted show with just a couple of short episodes. It’s mainly a comedy about a middle aged aristochrat who leaves his life of luxary to persuit his dream of becoming a pirate, and the story follows him and his crew of lovable misfits. It’s chosen family, it’s middle aged gays, it’s non-binary people, it’s heartfelt and funny and sad and without gay trauma or queerbaiting. And it’s just lovely!

You had NO idea how long I’ve waited for this upload from you. I low key checked my subscription page every day waiting for this lol. Excellent video and lovely insight!

Just a heads up on reading Solitaire. Although it is Tori’s story, timeline-wise it covers events after what we have seen in the TV series thus far, and there is an incident that is most definitely a spoiler. These eight episodes cover the events of the first two graphic novels, so you are safe reading them. It will most likely make you love the adaptation even more.

The line from Ben: Are you obsessed with me or something is chosen so well.. Because just like the time at the movies it's the other way around. He is obsessed with Charlie. I love that Charlie got the courage to go back to the field and don't live in loneliness because I could't agree more with the speech from the teacher

Said it before, gonna say it again. I love how Nick handled the public situation. He made his point by stop playing and heading over to Charlie, but not forcing him into anything of public display. I know many wanted him to kiss him or make some big public speech, but at that point he had to think Charlie wants to break up and so he respectfully and softly took his hand, loosely first to see if he withdrew it. And when he didn't, he took him somewhere semi private, but clearly not caring from there on to be caught or seen. Not in the corridor and not in public at the seaside. Perfect example of doing it loving but respectfully.

I was so excited you finally watched the finale! Yours have been my favorite reactions, so insightful and heartfelt. Nick & Charlie met in January. Charlie and Ben talk about the Christmas holidays in the first episode.

I'm going to miss seeing your reactions. Hope you do it again next year. I think you are the only person that I know that processed and understood Heartstopper like I did. I had someone I know (at that point he was someone I considered my best friend) that I had really hyped the show to respond in a fairly negative way to it. He felt it was unrealistic and too "happy" and "joyful"... that that kind of relationship is not real and can never happen. Although what I saw is the template for the kind of relationship I am looking for. I had never seen it depicted before, but it was in my head and heart. This show is the first time I've seen something take my idealistic romantic nature and match what I feel inside my heart. I love hearing how you process everything in your brain. Thank you for sharing. I wish someone wanted to listen to me share my thoughts. In a way Heartstopper is bittersweet for me, cause for once it showed me exactly the kind of relationship I'm looking for but don't have. (I'm very similar to Charlie and looking for my Nick Nelson.)

I know it's heartbreaking that the 1st season is only 8 episodes, buuuuut you gotta admit it's almost perfect. There is no fat to this story. It never drags. I both love and hate the fact that is only 20 some odd minutes each in 8 episodes.

Also, I just wanted to say that I think this is the first time that a tv show or movie ever stated “Yes, we are boyfriends” clearly and joyfully. I don’t think I’ve heard that before tbh. It always tears me up a bit to hear Nick shouting it at the beach. It just means a lot to me. 💙💛 It’s TOTALLY okay that you made this video more than an hour; the longest Heartstopper review so far, but another RU-vidr came close. I love all of ur insights and cheering them on. I hope making these videos help you process your emotions a bit more. We process and make due until season 2, and in the mean time, Kit Connor practices his French. We’ll all get through this.

Book Timeline - - Heartstopper v1 and v2 (Season 1) - Heartstooper v3 - Heartstopper v4 and Solitaire happen at the same time. Solitaire does have spoilers about Nick and Charlies relationship and Ben is also in the story. This Winter happens between chapter 5 and chapter 6 of Heartstopper v4 - Nick and Charlie Heartstopper v5 isnt out yet so not sure where it fits into the timeline but from bits on webtoon I would guess between Heartstopper v4 and Nick and Charlie. Radio Silence main character is Aled who appears in the Heartstopper Graphic novels but was replaced by Issac in the show and I believe it is set further in the Future. Loveless and I was born for this are not related and contain totally different characters.

Love your reactions! I'm so glad I'm not the only one so impacted by this show, and so sad when it was over. I have watched it so many times, and never get tired of it because it's so friggin beautiful. I know they're starting to film season 2 in September so I hope we don't have to wait too long.

It's not actually leaves in the painting. The mural is Alice Oseman's version of the painting 'The Great Wave of Kanagawa'. It's a painting of a massive wave about to engulf a small fishing boat and it literally foreshadows the fear of what's about to happen and not being able to do anything to prevent it. It's another very deliberate addition and having this scene take place with the mural in the background is tragically beautiful. It links into Nick's fear of what Charlie is about to do and he feels like he is unable to prevent it. A brilliant inclusion that most people don't pick up on.

For coming out scenes, Skam S3, E6 when Isak comes out to his best friend Jonas is up there for me in incredible coming out warmth!

I know it's been two years since you recorded this, but... I just wanted to say that I loved that you mentioned Justin's coming out in Ugly Betty as one of your favorites (btw. it was at Hilda's wedding, next to last episode of season 4). I honestly don't know anyone in my immediate environment who knows the show or has watched it. Which is unfortunate because it is and always will be one of my favorites. Thus, hearing others be appreciative of it once in a while is wonderful.

Enjoyed your points about friends knowing people better than their romantic interests. I used to have a friend who would introduce me to his boyfriends as his 'user manual.' He told them that if they didn't understand how he worked, they could ask me to explain. LOL. It was sooo true too.

Watched the first of these reactions a couple weeks ago, and have just binged the rest during a sleepless night... You are right to pause when you have something to express. Too many reactors keep going and either miss the show, or curtail what they were saying so they don't miss anything. I definitely prefer your 'pause with the insights' approach to the ever frustrating interruptions by others that end up going nowhere. I particularly appreciate the way you explain how some characters do not have all the information that the viewer has, and therefore may not react to situations in the way we would... You can read the first and second book of heartstopper (the last scene of the show is literally the same in the book lol). About Solitaire (the Tori's book) happens during the fourth book of heartstopper so it will have spoilers. The sames applies to "Nick and Charlie" and "This Winter". Radio Silence has minimal spoilers about Solitaire. I was born for this and Loveless are completely safe so go for them!

Now that you're mentioning favorite scenes, one of mines was in episode 5 when Nick overheard charlie and Tao and then they come out of the restrooms and nick look at charlie and suddenly hug him. Charlie looks the happiest man alive. I want to have that.

In episode 1 Charlie and Ben meet after Christmas break. They talk about their holidays. Well, Charlie tries to talk... I don't know anything about UK school system or dates, but since Sports Day takes place at the end of the school year (so I assume June or July?) looks like it was 6-7 months (of intense pining) Love your reactions and your insight and how well spoken you are. The thing about Tori's book, Solitaire, is that while Nick and Charlie aren't the main characters, they are pretty significant supporting ones and the tone of the first 3 heartstopper comics is very different from the fourth one during which Solitaire takes place and they are both darker and a lot of the two books overlap so if you're looking to avoid spoilers, id wait to read solitaire

If you don't want to spoil the series, you can read volume 1 and 2 of the comic. Solitaire is the book about Tori, Radio Scilence is the book about Aled, he is the character that got replaced by Isaac. The novellas take place later in the comic (This Winter is around the end of volume 4, I belive, and Nick and Charlie is set in the future when Nick is about to leave for University). I Was Born for This and Loveless are their own separate novels unrelated to the Heartstopper universe, so you can definately read at least them. Also, there is no specific order for reading, but Alice made a chronoligical graph of the events of the books. I haven't read all of them yet, but if you were to read them, I would definetely reccomend to read Heartstopper first, then Solitare, then Radio Scilence. (in RS there are some references to the events of Solitaire). Also, Solitaire mentions some things considering Charlie's mental health, some thenigs haven't been properly explored in the show and just hinted at. So I would reccomend you read the books only if you already read the comic all the way up to volume 4. Overall, I would highly recommend to read the comics because you would notice SO MUCH MORE in the show if you rewatch it, some things that probably only the readers can notice (like some hints about Charlie I mentioned before of some of the Nick's friends behaving differently from the rest moronic rugby lads). Hope that helps :)

My advice is not to read the books until the material has been covered in the TV series, as you are doing (then read away, of course!). I've been watching other reactors to Heartstopper and one of them whom I enjoyed watching read everything halfway through and it changed the nature of his reactions which made for less good viewing in my opinion as it was "is it that scene? Oh yes, it's that scene" and there was relatively little surprise left for him in the end. I don't blame him for doing so and it's still a valid response, just more of a "review" than a "reaction". And I loved your reactions, so I would hate to miss out of them!

I love that you went into such depth in your analysis, and I thought it was spot on. For myself, the two lines in this episode that just made my heart SING, and where I thought, "my GOD, what a beautiful writer Oseman is" were Torie telling Charlie "you're not ruining my life," and Nick saying "I like you so much. And I love liking you." What a BEAUTIFUL way of having that boy who is just coming to terms not only with his sexuality but with the depth of his feelings for another boy, to essentially say "I love you" when that would have been, understandably, a terrifying thing to say. And Kit Connor's performance just blows me away. It's so nuanced, rich, and relatable, and from such a YOUNG actor, that I'm completely gobsmacked. I thought ALL of the acting was incredible, and a lot of the credit has to go to the spectacular directing by Euros Lynn.

i think one thing im interested in is whether or not alice will address charlies trauma in regards to ben SA him and how they will do it without making it too dark. i feel like it happened so fast and they never really touched on it further. only the verbal stuff was talked about (which is extremely important and it was 100% necessary). i think that feeling of not having control of a situation thats so intimate could easily affect his relationship with nick and anyone really. coming from someone who is still in school and has dealt with something similar, becoming close with people is extremely hard. i can just easily see charlie having issues with that in his future with nick. im not even sure of this makes sense but i hope they do talk about it. bc its important

You are fantastically and comprehensively analytical with your reactions (Heartstopper being the first of yours I have watched) and I really appreciated it. I didn’t mind the stop/start as remembering and commenting afterwards is not easy when you have such a lot of information and insights to offer. I like best the dynamics between Charlie and Nick based on who was the lead and who was the vulnerable one in any one conversation. Can't wait for series 2. The whole of series 1 must have taken place in two terms, as episode 1 was the first day back in the new year.

@Harry be careful if you don’t want any spoilers… Solitaire (which is awesome and I hope they do a Tori spinoff) does have some references to some pretty big plot points in Charlie’s story for S2 and S3. Heartstopper 1 and 2 is covered in S1 so you’re fine and it’s so sweet seeing what is replicated. “I was Born for This” is completely outside of the Heartstopper story but tbh is a bit prophetic/scary for the fandom and how they interact with Kit Connor and Joe Locke.

Did anyone notice the single tear that slipped from Ben's eye just before Charlie said "Leave me alone!"? Ben is a complete and utter ass, but major props to the actor for adding that layer of detail without saying a word. I can't imagine the firestorm in Ben's mind when he lay in bed that night. He blew it, he didn't even want it but he really really did no matter how much he tells himself otherwise. He's been rejected, but he rejected back harder as a tactic and still got rejected again. He hates Nick Nelson not just for winning, but because Nick knows both his truths...that he is attracted to boys and that he's an utter shit, and Nick despises him for the latter. That Nick has figured out how to have the boy and how to migrate to a safer place. That the single door to act on his gay feelings has slammed shut and he can't claw it back open no matter how much he tries what used to work. And even though he knows Charlie won't out him, he has no such assurances about Nick and he's just going to have to live with that omnipresent fear. And probably more. That's a major kudo to an actor whose character had, what...20 lines in the whole show? I agree that I'd like to see more of Ben, because Sebastian is so compelling to watch. the timeline is a bit confusing, but we can sort of gather it's January to May/June time? Because when Charlie and B*n meet up at the beginning they're talking about Christmas - and then i'd imagine a month passes over the "hi" montage and the pen exploding incident, because by the end of the episode, B*n mentions it's February - and then the next Charlie's birthday is April 27th, so ep 5 takes place the week of April 27th. by the end, sports day ofc tends to happen around the end of the school year at the beginning of the summer months, around june time. see, this is where the timeline deviates from the main heartstopper books because according to the heartstopper fandom wiki, all the books take place in the same year (volume one happening in january, volume 2 happening in april, volume 3 happening in may, volume 4 happening in august, etc. which i'm kinda glad the show changed because ofc they focus on elle, tara and darcy a little more than the books do and because they stretched the timeline out that's a lot more possible, and the timeline feels a lot more realistic for everything that happens in it.) but yeah, it's a little bit confusing when it's all squished into an 8 episode time limit.

I've loved your reactions to this series, pauses and all! You can safely read I Was Born for This, and I think Loveless, without any Heartstopper spoilers as the stories are unrelated. There are some teeny-tiny crossovers in Radio Silence but no particular spoilers that I can think of.

hi just want you to know i love your rection because you explan what is happeing so people can understand every episodes and its is so love warm and everything about this show it tells everything what can happen in our lives the bads and the good sametimes it hard for people to come out i know how that feels i feel the same way and nick and charlie are so speical and there love for each other are so real their passion is so beautiful and they got very strong friendship i love them so much they support each other and beening there for each other its so magic and lovely to watch and there chemistry is strong and they ment to be together and i love how nick came out to his mum that will make everyone cry i did that was so loved and very speical for young teens what they going though in life. and everything was spot on and i realy love it and i cant waite for season 2 to see how nick and charlie realiship goes and everyone in it and cant waite for it
