When I came out to my mother, at first she told me to be 100% sure with my decision. But after a day, she finally picked up that this was a forever thing and, she accepted me so well, that for pride month, she placed a sign on her bedroom door with the Bi colours saying, "My son's Bisexual, and im proud of it!"

What I love most about Nicks coming out is that he started the conversation saying Charlie's his boyfriend instead of starting with saying he's bisexual. Because when I think about when I have kids, regardless of their gender, I want them to come home a just say mom I have a boyfriend/girlfriend and not feel they have explain their sexuality to me. This is something I feel should be more normalized and I hope the day comes where people can just say their in a relationship.

Year++ late to this party, but this is precisely how I came out to my parents as a 26-year old. I said Mom/Dad, I've been seeing someone....and I'd like for you to meet him because he's very special to me. It wasn't about saying that I was gay, just that this is a person important to me and I'd like you to be a part of our life.

I love Olivia Colman so much, but I had been wondering why she was in the show as she had little to nothing to do. But then this scene in the finale came round and it all made sense. She's such an incredible actress that can convey so much without even saying a word. This was such a beautiful coming out scene that really got me choked up tbh lol

To think: There are actual “parents” out there who FAIL at their role by reacting hysterically or cruelly by rejecting, disparaging, or disowning their gay child while conveniently citing pointless religious edicts. This scene is beautifully and delicately presented. “Heartstopper” is an absolute gem of a show.
@quelquunparla824
@quelquunparla824 Год назад
There is also the ever present gray zone. Parents who fail by having a fearful reaction because of ignorance, or parents who try to crack a joke because of their nervousness but it's at best akward or homophobic, hurtful... (cf love, simon and his dad's reaction when he comes out). But they can still love you and want the best for you, and you can go together on a (sadly hard) journey to understand one another, where each comes from and how your love and family relationship makes you move past that... or not sometimes, it's a sad truth.
@The_Memorial
@The_Memorial Год назад
@@quelquunparla824 yeah. When I told my mother I am gay her first reaction was surprise/shock. The next 3 days she was ill, then we talked about it again she said it was wrong( christian) and 15 minutes later she came back to my room crying telling me she loves me no matter what. But after that we never discussed it, she never asked anything. I get it might be awkard for her so I never brought it up again. But its been 3 years ever since so yeah... it's not as bad as being rejected, but it's definetily not as good as being supported.
@J_Mock92
@J_Mock92 18 часов назад
@@The_Memorial I think a big part of it (at least in my experience) is just the acknowledgement on the parent's behalf, and the fear of what might happen to the child (ridicule, bullying, hate crimes, etc). I came from a fairly conservative and religious upbringing, and when I came out to my Mom like 18 years ago, she mostly just seemed worried for me when I think back on it. She already knew before I told her (as I'm sure many if not most parents do), and said she "wondered" or "had her suspicions" since I was like 4 or 5 years old (before anyone tries to come for me or her, yes I know stereotypes can be harmful, but they do exist for a reason...). Everyone in my family already knew before I officially came out, and my Mom as well as the rest of my family (including those who are still quite devout Christians) are all incredibly accepting of me, but I think there's a bit of fear and worry in the back of their minds, because there are a lot of _other_ people in this world that are hateful and disgusting and have no problem (and may even delight in) causing harm to us, or anyone they see as "other," if that makes sense. (Edit: I realize your comment is from a year ago, and I hope that you and your mother have spoken more about it and come to terms with things. I know it can be hard if not, because there are so many factors that play into the situation, but not talking about it at all can't remedy the situation or bring you closer together. It's sometimes better to speak uncomfortable truths, and maybe even argue for a bit, than it is to say nothing).
@The_Memorial
@The_Memorial 18 часов назад
@@J_Mock92 yeah my mum said she had her suspicions too and that she only wanted me to be safe. Funny thing is she found my STD receipt from a clinic a few months ago and panicked. I had gone home for the holidays and was ready for an interrogation😂💀 but I told her it is just something everyone should do once in a while regardless of their sexuality and she kept going on about wanting me to be safe. “Well taking these tests is for my safety”

@douglasduckett3438
@douglasduckett3438 2 года назад
I have watched this scene over and over. I am 65 and have been blessed to be with my partner -- now husband -- for 37½ years. How different growing up gay would have been if a show like this existed in the 1960s-70s. About the acting: of course, Olivia Coleman is beyond genius. The woman is a master class in acting in just one scene. But can we talk for a moment about Kit Connor's acting? The fact that he can barely breathe as he stumbles out the words rang SO TRUE -- I totally remember that tight-chest, almost breathless anxiety as I told each of my parents. I was fortunate -- while they were not as perfect as Olivia Coleman, they did very well. But this is such a powerful reminder that however much the "macro-world" has changed, LGBTQ young people don't live in that world. They each live in their own micro-world, and it's still terrifying to tell your truth to your parents, your friends and schoolmates, and your extended family and community. The amazement of this show is that every moment with every character rings true. How the Brits pull that off -- talk about these issues without over-processing them or being overly pedantic and preachy. They let the characters tell their stories and show their lives, and that is everything. My husband and I have watched this show through twice already -- with tears more times than I can count -- and I have no doubt we will again. SO. WELL. DONE!!!!!

You and your husband seem awesome! I'm an 18-year-old Brit and this show definitely makes a difference. I'd never seen teen love between boys presented so tenderly and unashamedly before, and so it means a lot. Also, yes, Olivia Colman is fabulous

@@brownproductions8391 Yes, she is indeed! You are coming into adulthood in a far better and more open world. Far from perfect -- and your generation will, I trust, "move the ball forward" into greater freedom, acceptance, and inclusion. But the life that my husband and I have now was unthinkable in high school (we actually knew each other in high school, though we did not start dating until I was out of law school and he was a fourth-year medical student). It was unthinkable even to come out in high school then -- now it is not at all uncommon. So wonderful! I wish you a lifetime of love and happiness.

Im not bi, I dont identify anything with this, but that doesnt matter at all. I LOVE THIS. The way Kit is acting, hesitating with his lips to say what he wants, not being able to look at her mom in the beginning to her eyes, and finally he could and he spell it out. Freaking hell. And so refreshing and healthy, finally, a NORMAL reaction from a parent. Not homophobic ones anymore, Im so tired of that cliche. Simply a normal thing. Just loving your son. So beautiful 😭😭😭😭
@FawnMidnight
@FawnMidnight Год назад
This is by far my favorite scene in the entire 1st season and here's why: the subtle nuances in kits facial expressions. Just based off his expressions and the hitches in his voice you can tell what emotion he's feeling. When he says "we're going out" his eyes light up, his face brightens and he seems excited, but only for a split second when he remembers he's telling his mum and he's scared. Then when he says "I just wanted you to know" you can hear the hitch in his voice, from the nerves and the fear of not knowing what to expect from his mom. He's done so much research and most likely has heard of parents disowning their children for coming out so he's scared but he still wants to tell her because he's just so happy to finally truly be himself and he's willing to take that risk. You can see it all in those two lines and it's just wonderful. Kit is an amazing actor and he's going to go on to do great things after this show.

This makes me cry, because I just came out to my father after struggling with the idea for so long and he is basically guilt tripping me for not coming out to him sooner when he never made me feel like I could trust him with that. I don't even needed him to acknowledge that („I am sorry if I ever made you feel like you couldn't tell me that“), but it would have been nice to not be blamed and told I was responsible for our relationship being strained because of that. The whole message was about him not being a bad person and not considering my experiences or feelings. :(

Ah... I'm definitely not a teenager but a full grown almost 30 year old woman who still dreams of an outcome like this... If I ever come out to my family. I've known I'm bisexual since I was like 19 or 20 so... it's been a long time, sometimes I feel like they know and just play dumb or live in denial. Sometimes I feel they just don't want to pressure me to come out. I'm very open about it to friends and even in work but... I just panic over telling the family close to me. This is beautiful and I wish most people out there can get a hug and those words of love that we all want to hear. It is really something so special.

I baaaaawled my eyes out when I first saw this. This is just so beautiful, and it's the way that every young queer person should be received.

After I saw that scene, I felt confident enough to come out to my best friend. The next step is to tell my parents and family

This is beautiful. My parents are both gone, didn't have my own coming out story, but I'm pretty sure it would have gone south. Blessed are those who were not met with hostility, and to those who were, my heart goes out to all of you. And to those who haven't come out yet, do it at your own time.

I know this might sound cheesy but watching this show gave me the courage to come out to my family at 30. Watching this show made me feel very emotional about a childhood and moments in lofe I could’ve and can still have.

I "came out" to my mom as bi in such a nonchalant way. I just commented on how bucky Barnes gives bi energy and I should know since I'm bi. And my mom was like "did you seriously just come out to me through Bucky Barnes". And I was surprised that I guess that was the first time I had told her. I suppose it just shows how lucky I am to have known my entire life that my mom would be supportive of my sexuality no matter what. I never doubted that in any way. That's why I never felt the need to come out to her because if I one day told her I was dating a girl no doubt shed accept it.

Olivia is such a wonderful actress and Kit does such amazing job. Both conveyed the emotions amazingly, Nick was feeling nervous and vulnerable, Sara was being receptive, comforting, warm. My mom did this when I came out by 19 and their response when we show to them who we are is monumental to our confidence moving forward.
