as a lesbian, i relate to Robin so much in this scene. i could just feel the pain in her chest, knowing that she can’t possibly feel the same way and wishing they could’ve just stayed best friends. i wish i had a friend like steve, because most of the times this happened to me, they didn’t take it nearly as well. especially since steve was born in the 60’s, it’s amazing how kind and accepting he is in comparison to people i know who were born in the 2000’s

It's so rare and so refreshing to have a female, lesbian character be best friends with a male, straight character. Way more often than not it's a gay guy that is best friends with the straight girl.

This series is set in 1985. A time when being openly gay was extremely dangerous. And also a time when TV and movies started challenging the idea that being gay was somehow wrong. Robin represents that. A wonderful, quirky, lovely girl that is struggling in her loneliness about being gay, about wanting someone to love...about being accepted. And there is Steve, one of the biggest jerks from her school, turning out to be a damned good friend. And she is TERRIFIED that he will reject her friendship, that he may even attack her over being gay (which happened and still happens today)...she loves him AS A FRIEND...and she is scared. And Steve simply accepts it. It takes a few seconds to understand it. She may be the first gay person he ever met. And he just...accepts it. When so many would not have, Steve make a Muppet joke and accepts her. That is why in the end, Robin gets Steve a job. She will now defend that doofus until the day he dies. Steve protects the Party, but Robin protects Steve. Because he earned it.

The way Robin cares about having to reject Steve romantically, the way Steve reacts when he is rejected but quickly realises Robin is vulnerable and and puts her at ease with a joke about her crush...this whole scene is prime. Two people becoming genuine best friends once they fully understood one another. Also, Steve's heart wasn't broken, it was not love, love is deeper and takes longer than a summer in an ice cream place. Steve really liked her and was romantically rejected. It can still hurt but if you've emotional intelligence you can process that pretty quickly. Steve processed that he wasn't rejected as a person, as a friend, just as a romantic partner. It's that emotional intelligence that allowed Steve to instantly realise the person he cares about is isolated and vulnerable by her admission to him and quickly put her at ease. She was also scared of losing him as a friend. The way the chords of the music slowly builds again the second he jokes about Tammy mirrors Robin's emotional state as it too slowly builds up again once she realises Steve accepted her for who she is. It's such a powerful scene.

The way Steve reacts to her confession by making her laugh and being totally cool about it is the best thing ever. Character development y’all

Steve’s development was just great, at first he was kinda a jerk but became a mum and adopted a bunch of kids.

I love how heartwarming this scene is. Most guys react to their crush being a lesbian with “I can change that, I’ll fuck you straight”, “You’re too hot to be gay”, “I’ve been friendzoned by the only girl j wanted to fuck” or like it’s a blow to their ego. But Steve takes it in stride and they can both laugh together. It’s just so nice. 🥰

Just shows how close they are as friends, and Steve still willing to be friends with her is amazing, especially during that time. Side note: Honestly, I can see them making an agreement like “hey, if we both don’t get married by 30, we will just marry each other for government benefits.”

This was truly one of those “human moments” you could only understand if you still have a soul or empathy for other humans.

He chose to keep her sexuality a secret from everyone, including Dustin. This shows you how much Steve has matured and continues to mature throughout the show. Even though there a high chance he could die in Season 5, I hope he doesn't because he deserves a happy ending.

People who say that the sudden change for him to become a supporter of LGBTQ after being against it in season 1 makes no sense are wrong. I think the biggest reason for his sudden change as that he was the popular kid in school, none of his friends were LGBTQ he thought only the weird kids were. And now he’s become friends with someone who was unpopular in school, realized how cool she is and how popularity doesn’t mean anything, and now realizing that Robin is gay he’s gonna support it because he cares about her. Sometimes it takes a personal experience for you to be invested in something. For example someone who came from nothing would be a lot more likely to help the poor than someone who’s always been very rich.
