You can see Robin is struggling so hard. She knows she's going to break Steve's heart, but she has to tell him the truth because she really loves him and knows he deserves honesty. And Steve handles the situation sooo brilliantly. This scene is so touching, sad and relieving at the same time. Masterpiece.

@swissidol8403
@swissidol8403 4 года назад
@Matheus E You sure? I didn’t sense any real implications of her being a lesbian at all. Not like she should’ve worn a sign on her chest exclaiming her sexuality, but I honestly feel like the character would’ve remained relatively the same if she was straight. It’s not a bad thing that they added an admittedly “gay” character to the roster, but I feel that they should’ve done it in a way that would actually impact/explain the decisions she makes over the course of the show, not just so that she could turn down Steve. Hopefully in the fourth season they’ll actually build upon her sexuality and properly implement it into her character, but I just feel like the way the “big reveal” happened could’ve been better.
@JetDarknessable
@JetDarknessable 4 года назад
@@swissidol8403 The way i see it, it changed her and the relationship she had with Steve. For example, it shows the struggle she had with her sexuality possibly affecting her friendship with Steve, because he could judge her or being so heartbroken. Sure, she didnt need to be gay for the Steve rejection thing to work, but i think it was a clever way to do it. I mean, Nancy already dumped Steve cause he wasnt her type, if the same happened to Robin, it would be kinda boring. I also think it was meaningful to her, because it adds to her personality. The whole season i thought she liked to tease and mock Steve in a way of drawing his attention to her, kinda like "notice me" way. So it works like a semi plot twist, if you will. And yeah, it wasnt explored a lot, but it didnt needed to be. Shes a secondary character on a pretty large roster, and sexuality is far from the main focus of the plot.
@sia6045

the absolute hurt you can see in robin's eyes when she realizes that steve likes her is so heartbreaking. you can tell that their friendship means so much to her and she's terrified that by rejecting him she'll ruin it. that's what makes this show and the characters so relatable and loved, because i think we all go through that at some point.

@SignoftheMagi

This series is set in 1985. A time when being openly gay was extremely dangerous. And also a time when TV and movies started challenging the idea that being gay was somehow wrong. Robin represents that. A wonderful, quirky, lovely girl that is struggling in her loneliness about being gay, about wanting someone to love...about being accepted. And there is Steve, one of the biggest jerks from her school, turning out to be a damned good friend. And she is TERRIFIED that he will reject her friendship, that he may even attack her over being gay (which happened and still happens today)...she loves him AS A FRIEND...and she is scared. And Steve simply accepts it. It takes a few seconds to understand it. She may be the first gay person he ever met. And he just...accepts it. When so many would not have, Steve make a Muppet joke and accepts her. That is why in the end, Robin gets Steve a job. She will now defend that doofus until the day he dies. Steve protects the Party, but Robin protects Steve. Because he earned it.

The way Robin cares about having to reject Steve romantically, the way Steve reacts when he is rejected but quickly realises Robin is vulnerable and and puts her at ease with a joke about her crush...this whole scene is prime. Two people becoming genuine best friends once they fully understood one another. Also, Steve's heart wasn't broken, it was not love, love is deeper and takes longer than a summer in an ice cream place. Steve really liked her and was romantically rejected. It can still hurt but if you've emotional intelligence you can process that pretty quickly. Steve processed that he wasn't rejected as a person, as a friend, just as a romantic partner. It's that emotional intelligence that allowed Steve to instantly realise the person he cares about is isolated and vulnerable by her admission to him and quickly put her at ease. She was also scared of losing him as a friend. The way the chords of the music slowly builds again the second he jokes about Tammy mirrors Robin's emotional state as it too slowly builds up again once she realises Steve accepted her for who she is. It's such a powerful scene.

HammerBann That’s actually not true. She talked about how she knew what her character was from the beginning of filming. It was helpful to her acting. They just had that scene that way because Robin wasn’t about to tell him something like that tied to his back in a Russian interrogation room. Back then especially it was a much bigger deal. She was prbly trying to avoid suspicion altogether and only told him the truth cause he expressed feelings for her.
@xXSakuraTearsXx
@xXSakuraTearsXx 5 лет назад
HammerBann Okay I get what you’re saying now but I still think their plan was for her to be gay from the beginning and they purposefully mislead the audience because they wanted you to expect them to get together (the normal cliche); and like I said before I don’t think Robin would explain why she was obsessed with him at that time under the circumstances. Her statement was technically true but with the motive of hiding what she was. I think the writing for it was amazing because everyone is so convinced the obvious will happen but in just a few sentences between those two in a bathroom not only do their characters grow exponentially but so does their friendship and I love the way they shocked us all. It was beautiful. That is just my opinion though. I definitely don’t think it was a last minute decision to make her gay during the writing. Everything was intentional to make you believe she likes Steve and I’m not mad about it. It made for an interesting twist.

On the other hand, he probably understands on some level that coming out to someone (especially back then in middle America) is / was a pretty big deal, and ripping on her choice of crush is his way of showing that nothing has changed between them. This scene shows so many reasons why Steve is my favorite character. Even though he essentially got rejected, he still chose to be there for her and be a friend. He chose to keep her sexuality a secret from everyone, including Dustin. This shows you how much Steve has matured and continues to mature throughout the show. Even though there a high chance he could die in Season 5, I hope he doesn't because he deserves a happy ending.

Stranger Things is really good at breaking stereotypes and that's one of the reasons I like it. Like back in season 1 I thought Hopper was going to be one of those adults who doesn't listen to the kids at all and thinks they are just making up all the stuff so that the kids have no choice but to solve the mystery by themselves. Instead Hopper became one of the main characters who also tries his hardest to solve the mystery and that was definitely a good thing.

People who say that the sudden change for him to become a supporter of LGBTQ after being against it in season 1 makes no sense are wrong. I think the biggest reason for his sudden change as that he was the popular kid in school, none of his friends were LGBTQ he thought only the weird kids were. And now he’s become friends with someone who was unpopular in school, realized how cool she is and how popularity doesn’t mean anything, and now realizing that Robin is gay he’s gonna support it because he cares about her. Sometimes it takes a personal experience for you to be invested in something. For example someone who came from nothing would be a lot more likely to help the poor than someone who’s always been very rich.
