I love your reviews very balanced and most importantly well informed. Most 4K reviews haven’t got a clue about what they’re even looking at or for, it’s a breath of fresh air to watch somebody who knows what they are talking about. I watched this in the cinema when it was released and the 4K is true to what I saw back then.

I truly love this new 4k transfer of Heat, to me its better than the Blu-ray. Color is Spectacular and even the sound is more enhanced on the 4k and with my floor speakers 🔊 it's sounds out of this world 👊👊📽📽

It’s not a manipulated screen shot, the 4K blu-ray is darker. It’s even darker than the 4K digital. The disc based 4K is darker, PERIOD.

The images of both the 2017 and 4K look really nice to me, but the 4K clinches it. I think people have the mistaken idea that all my movies should pop, which isn't the case. Thanks for the video.

The color grading on the new 4K is fine. But at least on my tv the image is so dark and dim that it's basically unwatchable. In this comparison video the 4K was actually brighter than the bluray, that is not what I see on my set. Maybe it varies fom tv to tv what the 4K looks like. Usually the HDR makes the image darker than the bluray version, but I have never seen anything like the Heat 4K, I'd rather watch Terminator 2 on UHD, it's really that bad.
@TwinFlicks
@TwinFlicks 2 года назад
It varies on your TV settings and T2 isn't dark at all it was just not sourced from the 4K master but was instead sourced from the L 3D master. Anyways it can depend on your TV, the size and the settings on the TV. I watched it on my 65" LG and my 83" LG and there was a difference on the 65" and it did look slightly darker but stil itl wasn't nearly as dark as everyone is claiming it to be. So it very well could be your settings. I have a friend who also said it looked way too dark and he adjusted his settings and said he fixed it and now looks great. Play with the settings and let me know what you find.
@antoniom9972
@antoniom9972 2 года назад
@@TwinFlicks I didn't mean T2 UHD is dark, I meant it's a bad transfer. I have an LG CX and I can't make the image any brighter, oled light is 100 and contrast is 100. Dynamic tone mapping helps a lot, but it shouldn't be enabled, it's not accurate. I just compared the 2017 bluray with the 4K disc, and the bluray is A LOT brighter, maybe even too bright. The 4K is just insanely dim. I can't imagine someone would enjoy watching it if they saw what I'm seeing.
@TwinFlicks
@TwinFlicks 2 года назад
@@antoniom9972 hmm I don't know what to say. I agree it's darker but it was never that dark on my end. I keep hearing different things some people say it looked great even though it's slightly darker and I hear others who like yourself say it's too dark. It is accurate and the same 4k grading as the 2017 bluray, I'm sure the HDR makes it darker which might be why it looks brighter on your bluray. I'm not sure why some TVs looks so dark and others it doesn't?
@TwinFlicks
@TwinFlicks 2 года назад
@@antoniom9972 I will say as a side note I have been doing these comparisons for a long time. I use to work on restorations back in the day and color correcting. I spent alot of money buying and calibrating the software/hardware I use and the screenshots are directly from the UHD disc and the bluray with no color enhancements and I don't manipulate anything.

I had another look at the second scene with Vince in the desert; I take it it is dawn and the *brightness of the day* look similar in both blu-ray and 4K. The issue I have is with the money-exchange scene; that to me looks way off - overcast, unbelievable in that it is a bright day in LA and as I mentioned elsewhere it looks like a daytime scene in Silent Hill. If Mann wanted it to look as it does on the 4K, that's that; if our brains remember that scene as being (realistically) bright as we first watched it when the movie came out (pushed by his bosses and contrary to Mann's wishes), ours is a fair point and position and doesn't deserve derision. This has nothing to do with my tv not being calibrated, etc. and other similar jabs too many youtubers elsewhere - who constantly scream for likes and more followers - have lobbed with insults. I take the 2017 blu-ray and this 4K overall look as Mann's vision, but I am finding difficult to watch some daylight scenes. I'll have nothing else to say about this. As an aside, this incident reminded me of Megadeth's "Killing Is My Business..." album where the remaster was Mustaine's auditory "vision" and sounds and finally is a wholly different experience from the original.

Your comparison just confirmed for me that the 4K disc with SAME audio track is not worth the $25 vs $6 for the 2017 Blu-ray which is a great version on its own. I have only been upgrading to 4K for my favorite movies and movies that showcase what the 4K HDR format is capable of. Heat is one of my all time favorite movies but this 4K release is not stellar by any means. Maybe a bit more detail if you really look for it and the occasional slightly higher brightness in strobe lights and fire but not that significant. Heat is just not a display show-off type movie. You watch Heat for the story, the cast, and it’s amazing audio track (especially the bank shootout and airport finale scenes). Was really hoping for an amazing upgrade with a 4K HDR release for this one and it just isn’t there. Went with the 2017 Blu-ray and really enjoyed it on my 75” Sony X950H and Denon AVR system. Can’t beat it for $6 including free shipping on Amazon.

@@makeapathpresents yea I did end up getting it went it went on sale for $6.99. I figured, might as well see what all the fuss is about. I gotta say that the regular Blu-Ray does look and even sound better than the 4K disc. The 4K is definitely darker on my Sony X950H 75”, and I kept having to turn up the volume for the dialog (player is running through a Denon in 5.1.2 config). This wasn’t a problem on the Blu-ray Disc. Oh well. Still worth having for $7.

Thanks for sorting the truth out with this Heat 4K release. I believed the initial reviews of the 4K release, looking at the manipulated dark blue tint look Why would someone take the time to sledge the 4K release falsifying the picture. @@thegrimyeaper that's not a good analogy. The OP isn't saying he refuses to buy something because he already bought it. So I got the disc in the mail today and just watched it. It....is.......odd. Daylight shots look like constant dark yellow overcast, some shots have vibrant color mixed in with shots that seem almost black and white. (Like when De Niro takes pictures of the cops and when Pacino talks on the phone at the police station) At two points in the movie my LG CX screen must have somehow thought the movie was over or something, because it dimmed itself so dark that now the day shots looked like night, until a really bright point in the screen woke the image up and boom, brightness shot back up. I have never had anything like this happen in the years I've used this TV. I don't think I bought a very good car...

Not hating or anything, I like your video. I like that you are keeping it real unlike others who is jumping on the negative bandwagon. But this right here suggest that Michael Mann indeed changed the color grading. When it came to remastering the film for the Blu-ray, were there specific sequences you focused on? Yeah, the whole film! When you go into Blu-Ray, and you go to 4K, you’re in a different color space. Meaning that what was magenta doesn’t translate exactly. There’s no logarithm you could use to make “magenta” still stay magenta, with that exact color. So you have to imagine everything, from contrast, to how black blacks are, to what the color palette is. The ambition here was: If I was shooting the film two or three years ago, what would it look like? That was really it. So we went into every shot.
@TwinFlicks
@TwinFlicks 2 года назад
Thanks and i appreciate your comment's. According to Michael Mann's interviews he states that he brought it back to its orgrinal intended color grading. Maybe not in those 100% exact words and research I've done shows this is Mann's prefeted grading that he used for the theatrical run. But yes you are correct alot of times that happens changing the colors for home media viewing like WB did for the DVD and BD release. I'm sure it's not 100% what was shown theatrically that's impossible. But it's as close to it as possible. I focus on it all spacing, grading, highlights etc etc. I have a background working on restorations and home media so I do have a trained eye for it. I've been seeing more and more studios such as Kino Lorber bringing in either the DP or director to ensure the colors are presented accurately as they were intended to be seen.

Just received the 4k/Blu-ray/digital code of Heat today and I wanted to compare the 2 formats...In my honest opinion the blu -ray is "significantly better" than the 4k disc...More vibrant.. better color saturation...and of course brighter 💥 by ALOT! Even the sound (voices.. special effects) were significantly more pronounced... There's absolutely nothing wrong with my eyes and I can readily discern a good quality 4k transfer (such as Tenet..John Wick..etc) and Heat 4k is not in my opinion...I have an excellent quality blu ray player in the Panasonic BP 820 which cost a pretty penny @ $500 & is marvelous...Will be looking at the blu ray disc 💯% 😌

There are simply many people who don't understand the restorations or have good TVs set properly. Watch the film "Aliens". Its a dark lite movie tho it was brightened so that more detail could be seen on our then sub-par TVs. It when restored should have its original exposure retained to reflect the way it was shot and approved by Cameron originally. Mann has given us his film the way he wants it. Period.
