Heat: Final confrontation 

When you are rooting for the cop and also for the robber you know you have watched a fantastic movie.

The regret from Pacino despite killing him is deep. This is a guy who fundamentally understood him on a base level. It's just that there were on opposite ends.

This will always be the best ending ever in my opinion. As a viewer you can understand everything Vincent has gone through. He lost his marriage, colleagues, private life and possibly the only worthy opponent to his talents. This is the one story of his life to write a book about. Now he will ultimately face the boredom of every day life, chasing the other idiots around the block. We're right there with him, because we just witnessed the greatest crime movie of all time, spent 3 hours getting to know the characters and saw how their story ends. We know we'll probably never see a movie like this again. So we're kind of trying to hold on to something and don't know what's next, too.

When Neil holds out his hand, and Vincent takes it - but looks away - that's everything, the whole movie, right there. That's Neil, after a lifetime of hiding his feelings (what he perceived as weakness), finally giving himself permission to be vulnerable, and silently confessing to his sworn enemy that he was afraid to die. Then there's Vincent, who recognises Neil's fear but can't bring himself to look at him...he pities him enough to help him through his final moments, but he's immediately conflicted by that pity. How can he show mercy to a cold blooded killer? Then again, how can he ignore the plight of a dying man? Somehow, holding his hand but looking away is the best compromise he can think of...but as soon as he looks away, he is confronted by an even bigger problem. When he looks away...where else is there to look to? What else is there to feel? As Neil dies, Vincent realises that the troubles in his own life will only go on.

That look in Pacino’s eyes when he takes his hand. It’s so genuine. Amazing acting!

I remember when I visited my brother and he took me to see this movie. I was 15, he was 23. The theater had THX soundsystem and the famous shootout scene just blew my mind. This will always be one of my favourite films.

Neil had lived a life where he avoided human contact out of necessity only to have Hanna comfort him for his last few breaths. It is like poetry

The story is great, the music is epic the scene is awesome. Even though they were ultimate enemies he hold his hand while he was dying out of pure respect

Over 3 hours long and it speeds by. The film had everything and it did not get an Oscar, just shows you how crap the whole award thing is. I still think it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. De Niro and Al are the titans of the screen, the whole thing in just pure class.

This scene was pretty awesome. As much as I wanted Neil to get away, Vincent was equally badass and ended him. When the bad guy offers his hand up, knowing it’s over, and the good guy takes it, is definitely awe inspiring. 👍🏼

Epic ending to an epic movie. No matter how many times I watch this, it never gets old. Classic.

I saw this in the theatre in 1995 when it first came out, I had no idea what the movie was about except that it had 2 of my favorite actors in it. I walked out of that theatre absolutely blown away..I have never felt such satisfaction in both the screenplay and acting in any other movie since.

Whoa, the Music from Moby "God moving over the face of the waters" is the icing on the cake. Absolut brilliant. No modern Movie comes close to this masterpiece.

Extremely moving scene..reminiscent of blade runner final scene with Rutger and Harrison.. "like tears in the rain".. The spiritual connection between two and the moving music 🙏🏻❤️

Really don't know whether I prefer 'Collateral' or 'Heat'.. but one thing is for sure: DeNiro and Pacino deserved a monument of a movie together..and God knows: Michael Mann delivered a Hit for the ages!!!!

The final scene is one of the best criminal drama endings I have ever seen. Both the legendary and incredibly talented actors are my favorites, but Robert De Niro’s character is somehow closer, that’s why I wish Neil had survived. However, the sense behind is much deeper. Firstly, Neil is an outlaw - a ruthless robber with an impressive criminal history; secondly - he is a kind of gambler. Like a gambler, he is constantly balancing on the edge by increasing the risk of the operations and the value of potential trophies. His excitement and self-confidence know no bounds, but any game has two options: either you win, or you lose. For Neil failure is not acceptable. Neither is surrender. The only possible scenario is “Win or Die”. The moment of Neil’s death is just heartbreaking. The spectators can see how a confident professional who never ever assumed the possibility of defeat becomes vulnerable. Uncatchable Neil McCauley is now slowly fading away, heavily bleeding from his mortal wounds. Outstanding performance of De Niro makes the moment exceptionally realistic and touchable. You can notice a horrified look, intermittent breathing (even the relevant abdominal movements are shown close-up). Undoubtedly, he is in immense pain. We can feel his fear of death. When Vincent comes closer, Neil's eyes represent both a desperation about being overpowered and acceptance of fate at the same time. His last words: “I told you I’ll never go back” clearly state that he rather chooses death than be arrested. Could there be another exit? Probably not. Vincent, whose constant battle with criminals ruined his life, took away a family and in fact turned himself into obsessed animal fanatically hunting for a prey - will be unwavering. Like the quote says: “In a perfect world, it would be different, but the world is not perfect”. Their paths crossed in the wrong time - two of the closest souls and two of the worst enemies. I am sure, Neil would have killed him if there was a chance to make the first shot. Neil’s journey is over, but the next round of Vincent’s own hell has just begun. He stares anxiously into the distance, realizing that he is actually dead inside. I have seen a lot of criminal movies with pretty powerful death scenes but only two made me completely speechless - John Woo’s “The Killer” (1989) and “Heat”. Could not stand without tears. The magnificent performance of Pacino and De Niro, suspenseful storyline as well as beautiful music makes “Heat” a true masterpiece!

Holding your enemy's hand as he bleeds out is a human moment. It's only taken me, what, 25 year to learn that?

This ending always gets me and in my opinion Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are the best actors and best friends of all time hands-down.

The bank shoot out was right in front of my office in down town Los Angeles... they had huge bodyguards between shots ..nobody could get close to any of the actors. But it was cool to see them that close...

I remember seeing this in the theaters at roughly 10 years old. I was instantly captivated and obsessed and has remained my favorite film to this very day.

This movie could hit theaters today and still be a smash hit, and it’s been almost thirty years! He coulda got away with the girl, but he couldn’t let Waingro go! I don’t really blame Neil for going after Waingro though. I mean the guy was a POS in this fictional world. It was better without him alive to cause more chaos. Besides, we wouldn’t have got this poetic ending if he didn’t go after him. Also, I love that song that starts playing at 5:15 and Neil saying, “Told you I was never going back.” And Vincent being pretty sad about shooting him because of the mutual respect they had, always enjoyed that.

Look at what music does to a scene. Pure magic

I never hear anyone consider this as "one of thes best movoes all time". Im not saying it is, but i def think it should be in the discussion. The cast, the pacing, the action, the sound, the writing, character development, the ending, all top notch.

Beyond friendship, this film tells a story about family. Hanna and McCauley are not friends, circumstances have turned them into adversaries. They both respect each other, but as they proclaim in the cafeteria scene, neither of them hesitates when the time comes. The two are opposite sides of the same coin, they can see themselves reflected in each other's sides. They both have the same level of determination in their work, almost obsessive. And an important detail that is often overlooked is that they have both been in the Marine Corps. When Hanna shoots McCauley, he feels that he's killed a brother, not a friend or an adversary. Paccino is truly a giant in a movie filled with memorable performances

Good guy, bad guy and two guns. No fancy special effects, just a believable story. Man, what a movie.

This final scene is so beautiful and stunning that even the end credits are just perfect. And of course the recognition goes also to Moby for creating a masterpiece like God moving over the face of the waters. 10/10

i found it interesting that McCauley seems significantly more competent than Hanna through pretty much the entire movie. even in this final standoff, Neil gets the better of him, establishing a defensive position where he knows his path of ingress, locating him with his shadow, and waiting patiently in cover. the shots underscore that Neil understands the threat posed by the runway lights; meanwhile, Hanna moves out into the open, with no cover, and is taken completely by surprise by the lights. Neil has a clear shot on Vincent, but Vincent somehow manages to pirouette 90 degrees and hit McCauley first. to me this scene is Hanna being completely outclassed by McCauley - but McCauley can't bring himself to pull the trigger.

My all time favorite movie. I love how this scene doesn't have music playing over it. It makes it even more tense.

A gritty and edgy film that holds you to the very end. Every student aspiring to be an actor should have to watch this and films like it in order to graduate. Pacino and De Niro don't come no better. The level of talent and surrealism that they bring to roles is unmatched.

Saw this when I was 15. Blew my mind. Saw it countless times since then. Am 42 now. My son is 2.Hope I'm around so I can watch it with my son when he's older. Truly one of the best movies.

I watched this film on the big screen back in early 1996, an afternoon screening on the upper west side in NYC.The movie had been out a couple of months by that stage and i wanted to watch it in its proper setting before it ended its run.

I couldn't get enough of this movie. I just love everything about it. From start to finish. Even the soundtrack is an absolute masterpiece. I hope to buy a blu ray copy of this film. It should be on everyone's collection.

McCauley was a pro, but couldn't match the combination of coffee and cocaine of Hanna. The reflexes were another level.

Pacinos character said he had a dream where all the dead, “bloated” bodies he helped put away/kill were all in one place and look at him just as the his dream ends. In this scene, the bad guy is practically dead and slouched only not staring at him, but shaking his hand. That’s why there’s that moment where after he passes away, there’s like this breeze, along with pacino’s character sighing almost as if relieved. As if after that day, the cop would never have that dream again and released his inner demons by shaking the hand of the one person who wasn’t another dog pacino had to put down. Like if all the killings and being focused too much in stopping bad guys took a toll in his life. I love this movie

Since I saw this Grand Finale in the Movie Theater... Twice by the way, I had 13 year's. On this Day I can't stop seeing this movie until it finish, I love this Ending. In his Gen This is a Masterpiece.

Pacino killing Deniro was the most epic moment in movie history

Great ending, but Pacino got lucky. Deniro was a killer, had the defensive ground, and the element of surprise. 9/10 times, he wins.

The Moby soundtrack makes this scene way more emotional and couldn't imagine a better ending.

Remember when Hollywood produced movies that were well written, superbly directed and with actors whose presence dominated the screen? That were so good that you watch them repeatedly and are still watching scenes from them nearly thirty years later? Today’s Hollywood doesn’t.

I love how well written their characters are. Symmetrical opposites but at the same time they compliment each other. One is a cop, the other is a robber. Both are dedicated to their craft One is always on the edge and losing his shit. The other is more calm and collected. Both though are living dangerous lives One has a relationship falling apart, the other has a blossoming one. But neither can maintain a relationship because of what they do Both will not hesitate to kill the other But both respect each other enough to have a civilized conversation first

My favourite film of all time. It’s incredible setting for the finale, but Michael Mann likes realism, and to him a soundstage is heresy!

Two masters at their craft (being portrayed by two masters at their craft). Imo one of the most "Bro Code" endings of all-time. There's no celebration or gloating from Hanna. No speeches or melodrama from McCauley. Just a quiet respect between two professionals. Absolutely perfect writing and direction by Michael Mann.

I've seen this film since I 1st saw it in theaters upon its release....many many times. Maybe as an older man...Watching this after quite some time...the end when Neil holds up his hand and Vincent doesn't hesitate to take it...left me with tears in my eyes. I always wondered why he shot him so many times....then it hit me... that Vincent was granting his wish...to never go back.....because that would have been an even worse slower death for Neil. It's strange how, after committing murder and larceny that Vincent still felt for Neil. He sensed that they were both different sides of the same coin but had just taken different paths In life. Their focus and determination and dedication was the same like they were twins. Beautiful score and slow pull back from the camera to see it out.

My dad recommended me this movie yesterday and I was not disappointed! Mind-blowing!

The way Mann makes you feel for both hero and villain. The same in Collateral when Vincent sits down to die on the train. Ultimately we are all just good beings trying to survive whatever way we can in this fucked up universe. Some lose their way and turn to the dark side, but we can still feel for them.

Never thought Hanna took his hand out of respect, he took it then immediately looked away. Thinking about how shit his life still is, and how life is

Total advantage was with DeNiro.....being chased in the dark he could have picked the guy off anywhere.They shoulda shown him get away for a part 2!

No way Vincent is not popped first after Neil comes out that corner , Neil was a real talented man with a gun and he had him dead to rights but he decides to come out a full 2 3 sidesteps and get shot 2 3 times before even shooting an unexpected target. Epic movie , epic ending but only way to justify it is Neil did not want to really kill Vincent point blank period.

That night, Vincent lost the only person who understood him. An honest opponent, a friend, even a brother...

I reckon the inspiration is the relationship between Hector and Achilles. Neither wanted to be a part of what eventuated. It’s a modern day Illiad.

DeNiro should have said to Pacino, "You know this is our last good film." And Pacino just says "Yeah."
