Heat Pump Nightmare - Geoff's Story

When Geoff first came to us here at CB Heating, he had two Innasol twin fan heat pumps working cascade. The system was poorly designed and wasn't heating the house at all. The property was split into main house and annex. We did a full survey and heat loss calculations and found the system was undersized. We then installed two Daikin monoblocs, one for the house and one for the annex which solved Geoff's heating nightmare.
For helpful heat pump information or if you'd like to learn more about heat pumps take a look at our other videos or head over to our website www.cbheatpumps.co.uk

I had a Daiken (in a new house) for the nine years i lived in the premises. It was very quiet in operation and provided hot water and room heat adequately. It did suffer a breakdown, which required a replacement circuit board costing over £1000. The system utilises a fluid (forget the name) which has to be maintained at a very high pressure. Recharging of this fluid is required periodically and this too is expensive. My overall impression is that when set up and working properly it’s satisfactory but it’s important to have easy access to competent, responsive experts when things go wrong, along with moderately deep pockets.

Our winters in Tennessee are cold enough that a heat pump is not for me. I was sold on one when I purchased a new heating and air conditioning system in this house. I tried the heat pump but soon quit using it, because the "heat" it produced was lukewarm. Instead I just use the gas furnace that makes hot air. We have long hot summers here, so the heat pump wears out the air conditioning system prematurely. I don't think they are worth the money here.

I had my air source heat pump removed. *It was so unreliable that it spent more time broken down than working, and we were frequently without heat or hot water for days till the installers returned. *When it worked it would take an hour before the radiators got warm (never hot, just warm) and in the cold weather we needed the gas fire on as well. *When it started up it was like a jet engine and it would wake us up and could be heard over the TV. Neighbours complained about the noise. *The water wasn't really hot enough to do dishes or have a bath in, even running just the hot tap with no cold water, which meant it took much longer to run a bath. *When the temperature hit freezing it didn't work at all. *There was constant dripping of water due to condensation which in winter would freeze causing a slip hazard. *Despite being told it would be cheaper to use than the gas central heating it was far more expensive. *The rules for claiming money back under the green initiative required more loft insulation than I could have due to the loft having a floor, every light bulb had to be low voltage which would require fittings to be replaced in some rooms. Our older double glazing was not to the required standard either. * Initially it was installed on the floor at the side of the house meaning the access was limited and making it difficult for bulky items (like the new washing machine) to be brought to our back door. Due to the inefficiency the installation company then decided it needed to be lifted 1 foot off the ground, so moved it. It was still inefficient, and the company had now gone out of business. A 2nd company decided it needed to be higher up, so moved it up under the spare room window. It was still inefficient and the noise would have made sleep in that room impossible. It was also an eyesore and people would stare and point at it as the walked past and we frequently got asked what it was. This 2nd company also went out of business and when it broke down again, we had to pay another company to get it working. Since it regularly failed, it became an expensive process, which is why we decided to cut our losses and have it removed. We were told that heat pumps are UNSUITABLE to be retrofitted to existing central heating systems and are only suitable for new build homes. And this was from a specialist GREEN ENERGY COMPANY! Including the cost of a gas boiler to replace the one removed when the air pump was installed the total cost hit over £12,000. The technology isn't in place for this sort of thing, you need double the size of radiator to get near to the warmth you get from a gas boiler and have to accept the water will never get as hot as you are used to in the colder months. There are many heating engineers on RU-vid who testify to this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GhAKMAcmJFg.html

Assuming the funds last. There are still some heat pumps currently being sold that I would consider warm weather, but they are quickly being removed from the lineups and the selection for the consumer should be getting easier. I like the way Mitsubishi has the intelliduct system and would like to see more manufacturers do that. Being able to put it into an existing central air system and add a split head unit elsewhere at the same time is amazing. The only issue I have is the unit sizing. Many northern us and Canadian homes would benefit from sizing larger than 5 to without needing to use 2 units or going commercial. @tlangdon12
@tlangdon12 Год назад
Forced air ducting installed isn't the only option, but the cast iron radiators won't have the capacity you need at the lower temperatures that water-based heat pumps operate at. We have this same problem in the UK and in Europe, where heat pump installations are far more common. You need a big emitters (radiators) to work well at the lower temperatures. Upgrading to larger steel radiators is one option, but there comes a point where you run out of wall space! Converting to radiant floors seems to be a better option - they are the biggest radiators you can get for heat in your home! We have the option of very light weight screeded floors in the UK and Europe - google 'Lewis Deck' - the screed is pumped in to depth of 50mm on top of the 16mm thick Lewis Deck, so that average floor thickness is round about 70mm or just under three inches, so you will loose some height under the doors but if the house is an older property that might be acceptable. If you can't get big enough radiators or radiant floors into your home, a heat pump that outputs hot air like a mini split is the next best option.

Environmentally friendly is one factor of many, so is “popular” or “old” You should never just look to one place to make choices. You can find plenty on carbon monoxide poisoning but it’s not any better just bc we’re used to hearing about it or suffering affects and lung cancers from others things. This is just what we have to do, you may die a more violent death in a car but you won’t get frostbite and sicknesses you would on horse and buggy.

There is, it seems, a gradual tendency towards calling in tradespeople for anything previously done DIY. A luminaire lasted two years and since it had non-replaceable LEDs, it needed a rewiring into the mains. For most, an electrician would be needed, so heat pumps are of a similar ilk. Financial constraints means we do most home maintenance ourselves and since heat pumps contain microprocessors, the same applies. I much prefer the hands on approach to home maintenance, so, no thanks!

Someone sold this guy a heatpump system made for Texas, not England. In Texas heatpumps don't work at 35f. They switch to heat strips. In Colorado heatpimps work down to minus 15f before the heatstrips kick in. Some even colder.

Want to heat your home entirely with 'Electricity'? 1 Before you get a heat pump! 2 Have a look at what you currently pay per kWh for Gas and make a note of your January usage in kWh. 3 Now calculate what 33% of that is and then see what that amount of kWh will cost when Electricity provides it... important read on! That all assumes that it is possible to get 3kW back for every 1kW you put in; Unfortunately 'Air Source' heating (aka Heat Pump's which make this claim) is handicapped - unlike 'Ground Source' which can rely on little change on its 42º to 44 Fº source temperature summer and winter - air sources suffer large change though. Expect a catastrophic drop to freezing 32Fº in air temperatures (and below) in winter. This WILL result in your system providing a lot closer to 3kW in, for every 3kW out... or more. Expensive being the bottom and unavoidable line.
@ianship5058
@ianship5058 Год назад
Most air source heat pumps work well to about minus 28 F in a fairly dry atmosphere in high humidity areas the do ice up and go into a reverse cycle to defrost some using resistance heaters during the defrost period.
@colineastwood1357
@colineastwood1357 Год назад
@@ianship5058 Please define "working well"! '3 kW to 1kW in' has little to brag about as a 'Best you'll get' notion. The better placed 4 to 1, claimed for 'Ground Source' has someway to go - in Practice - to match any idea that it is an economical winner. Let us not forget that any GAS used to produce ANY electricity used, suffers from a huge loss of the available kW produced due to line-loss and other factors from source to consumer... actively removing the option to burn that GAS in our homes is at best... well actually there is NO 'Best', it is just a huge scam and a utterly worthless idea; as is cutting down forests to burn in the Drax B power station, after shipping them all the way across the Atlantic Ocean using fossil fuels. To add to that insanity this power station sits nigh on at the site of an open-cast coal mine.
@ianship5058
@ianship5058 Год назад
@@colineastwood1357 It all depends on the ambient conditions In a dry environment heat pumps work better than in High humidity and a COP of 3 or 4 is better than 1 to 1 for resistance heaters

@@ianship5058 The fact that we are backing a horse which could not win any race containing what we have now is obvious. Nobody jumps off a building in anticipation that AI has invented a parachute which is going to speed to the rescue. There are VERY clear indications the whole 'Net Zero' situation and the faked needs to scrap GAS for consumer use, is manufactured BS. We have world filled with well crafted lies ConVid, ULEZ, Vaccines that are anything but a 'Vaccine' reluctance to allow actual 'Scientific ' discussion to be played out and not least the term 'Conspiracy Theory'; a term now enjoying so many of its former attendees becoming 'Conspiracy Fact' that it has become embarrassing to hear the faith some still hope for when employing it.

@@ianship5058 I assume by "resistance heater you mean an 'Electric Fire', or very similar. We seem to be dancing around an issue of what might be best for maintaining a life worth having and not ruining the Earth to do it. Having a Gas fire in each room that actual has people in it, would REALLY be a sensible thing for our government to promote. Promoting the knowledge that 'Central Heating' - using ANY fuel available - is wasteful. There are probably people who REALLY do need 'Central Heating' though... heating with a fuel source that creates ALL the energy required, on-site, is a no brainer. Giving 'Management-Speak' names to 'Air Source' (electric heating) and then misnaming that, a 'Heat Pump' has ALL the hallmarks of a desperate con'. A Con' equal to persuading a dental patient his proposed (and newly discovered) anaesthetic-free tooth extraction, will be better in the long run for his health and recovery - and hiding that it has nothing to do with the overpriced set-up offered at a worthless practice of charlatans employed in anything but, 'good dentistry'.

well you should have backup heating. 2nd of all, I don't get he point of this video and I see the problem at 1:30, that's a very bad way to install a heat pump. Daikin is weak, the software is bad and lacking in a lot of ways, but the fucking thing never failed and has good defrost cycles. My Daikin AC has been running non stop for over a year, heating or cooling or dehumidifying or just as a fan. I left home for a couple of days, turned it off and when I came back home it was on because I forgot to turn off the schedule, so it started up a couple of hours after I left, LoL. Anyway, I still have a lot of complaints and there are a lot of things that could be improved on Daikin, but no one listens.

Before getting a heat pump you should first look at what can be done to make the home more air tight and energy efficient. An energy efficient home or business is more comfortable and saves money in the long run. Solar energy on your roof combined with battery storage can make people more independent from the grid and natural gas supplies. Add solar and supplemental electric heating or a heat pump for home heating.. Added insulation, triple glaze windows, energy efficient doors, energy efficient heating and cooling systems, energy efficient appliances, LED lighting, smart thermostats, solar panels combined with battery storage and a electric vehicle charger in the garage or car park. People are too focused on the short term costs and miss out on long term savings and comfort. Blower door testing and air sealing are under appreciated tools.Even if you have money to burn you should not waste it. Climate Change will impact everyone. Leave a better future for your children and grandchildren. Join in and speak up for the future of the planet.
