One of my favourite scenes in Heat is when Detective Vincent Hanna is in his car driving down the freeway towards Neil McCauley and his Cadillac for their meeting while the awesome Moby cover of the Joy Division song A New Dawn Fades is playing !
Didn’t know this movie existed till seeing the boys review it. Paused their show, watched the movie. Omg what a treat this was. Thank you for making me know about his treasure!
The fire fight was choreographed by Andy McNab, formerly of the SAS. It was used as a start point for weapons handling, tactical withdrawal and fire discipline when I joined the army. I remember leading an assault on an enemy position on exercise and all I could think of was McAuley shouting "MOVE!" between 3 round bursts of fire. I did the same, and my Teacher afterwards said it was one of the most aggressive and fast moving infantry assaults he'd ever seen. That made my day...!
I freaking love this movie. Made me a die hard Michael Mann fan. Goldeneye also came out this year and the first Mission Impossible. 1995 was an amazing year for film.
And yet another character actor in this is Xander Berkeley (Ralph) who is the poor schlub who Hanna’s wife is just using to piss him off. He was the step father to John Connor in T2, Gregory in the Walking Dead, so many roles. This cast was just majestic
Great review as usual gentleman. small side point that no one seems to mention when talking about this movie is that it is actually a remake. Michael Mann wrote and directed a TV movie back in 1989 called L.A. takedown that is basically heat in 90mins. Even has the same character names and definitely worth seeing as a companion piece to this classic.
One of my favorite movies. So many people have forgotten and/or given this film poor ratings and/or saying it it so slow moving. What I always try to bring to attention is that this film tries to present the lives/views of multiple persons involved in a crime thriller which this film does so very well. With the excellent cinematography, music score, very recognizable cast with outstanding acting and you have one of the most enjoyable and re-watchable films in American cinema. Thank you for putting this together and sharing.
The Soundtrack mated with the scenes was epic. Thank you Michael Mann what a Masterpiece. 26 yrs later i still remember the day i saw it in the theater, wanted to steal the poster behind glass on the way out.
Yay finally the movie that I first thought of when I saw Garys face for the first time. When I first saw this movie I thought it was a bit slow-moving but the second time I understood its greatness and now it just gets better every time I watch it.
You said it all, couldn't agree more! I always think a good sequel would be Val Kilmer's character coming back years later to reconnect with his son and set up a new crew, Vincent Hanna now a private detective gets on his trail.
Supposedly this movie inspired the two bank robbers whose armed rampage became known as the North Hollywood Shootout which ended with one robber blowing his brains out and the other getting shot in the legs 20 times being handcuffed and left to slowly bleed to death for 70 minutes. Wayne Grove didn't just screw over the crew, his killing of that security guard could have gotten them all a death sentence if they'd been arrested.
Another great review guy's, love this film, just rewatched it again last night, my favourite scene is when Val Kilmer's character Chris is warned off his wife that the heat is there so he can't return home to his life, he gets away with the robbery but loses everything in the process, always makes me feel sad, emotional.
The shootout...whew that's the best shootout in from that era. Also the movie Miami Vice y'all talked about...Michael Mann was pretty much the genius behind the TV show
Great Review, You clearly enjoyed doing this one.... ..I saw this many years ago on a standard say 32' TV and enjoyed the film but then didn't see again in full until 2015. And if ever a movie needed a home cinema set up to do it justice then this is one., during that downtown LA gunfight I was looking over my shoulder to see if there were bullet holes in the walls behind me.... couldn't agree more, this deserves more praise..........
Karen The kat ZON Haha I just made that comment. He was great when interacting with Ashley Judd and that intense sub plot of her and would she or wouldn’t she give up Chris (Val Kilmer).
Great review. Nice to have you guys back on Terra Firma. You've inspired me to rewatch. I lament the fall from grace of two acting legends. Heat was their swansong.
Great job, boys. I haven't seen this movie in years... But I do remember it being spectacular. I'll have to revisit it soon. Iain - Dude... You are NOT sexist. LOL. You're a family man and a stand up guy. Anyone who watches ya'll should know this. You say what's on your mind without worrying about how it'll come across. It's wonderful. Don't ever sensor yourself. Anyone who tells you different is a dumb bag of cunts.
One of the best, if not THE best movie regarding gunfighting realism, especially the sound. The blasts from those SBRs bouncing off the concrete is raw and real. Mann is the man.
Believe it or not: Neil McCauley was a real person To add to the above: "Heat" came about after Michael Mann had a conversation with former Chicago Police Detective Charles F. "Chuck" Adamson (1936 - 2008). Back in the early to mid 60s, Det. Adamson was part of an elite squad in the CPD and started keeping tabs on McCauley after his release from prison. The famous coffee shop scene in the movie happened between Det. Adamson and McCauley after Det. Adamson literally bumped into McCauley outside a dry cleaners after picking up a shirt he had there. Adamson admitted that "I didn't know whether to arrest him or shot him." before inviting him to get coffee. While sitting in the coffee shop with McCauley, Adamson said to him "Why don't you go somewhere else and cause trouble?" to which McCauley replied "I like Chicago"
I love how they were talking about the great cast and then when they get to Wed Studi and call him 'THAT GUY' and had the Last of the Mohicans mention in the beginning but didn't mention that movie lol.
When kilmer sees those cops, its crazy how immediate he begins opening fire, fuckin insane, hes just in beserker mode, he rivals john wick with how fast hes changing direction shooting, looks absolutely drop dead lethal.
Thought you were gonna not mention Chris's (Val Kilmer) arc, but you did after the ending. He is the only one to get away yes, BUT...they made a point to have him mention his absolute love for his wife & son in the film and now he must move on never again seeing them. That part got me the most, the heartbreak of both of their reactions and the fantastic score that went with the scene as without any dialogue you see the pain on both Kilmer & Ashley Judd's faces.
LOVE Michael Mann's work and style...i always thought if anyone did a stand alone movie featuring the Batman universe ...say a movie about Bane, the Joker , Cat Woman , Penquin etc it should be him
You guys are amazing, you are giving the classics what they deserve, only real movie lover and experts can do this. Btw. Hanna's scenes with his TV are brilliant as well, and the soundtrack by Elliot Goldenthal ofc.
They would’ve gotten more than a life sentence for greasing the armored car crew. Neil, Waingro and whomever the other triggerman was would’ve been federally condemned to death row had they been nabbed.
Awesome review.probably in my top ten movies.would love you to do your next review on either Apocalypse Now or Mulholland Drive.keep up the awesome reviews.
You should also check out Mann's L.A. Takedown (1989). It's very much like a prototype of Heat made for television. (I'm halfway through the video so if you mention this in my near future... well shit.)
You guys are killing me with the inaccuracies and misinterpretations. The precious metals depository was just another for-profit job; it wasn't them stealing materials for the next job (they still did the job after walking away). Also, they weren't selling the bearer bonds back to Van Zant for "quadruple the price"; they were selling them back for pennies on the dollar, betting that he was a bottom line businessman instead of a gangster. And the driver didn't hate working at the restaurant quote "because he just got out of prison"; he hated it because his boss was crooked and was stealing part of his check in return for not falsely reporting him as a thief, drunk, etc. to his parole officer.
@8:00 omg i was literally about to comment. this is a MALE FILM! funny that you address it. still it's pretty compelling to me as a woman. many/most hollywood stories (esp classics) are male centered, just the way it is and can still be appreciated by all mostly, imo. great great reviews. i've been watching your reviews of Pacino/deniro films all night and into the afternoon. cheers!
My ex GF was the one that watched action movies, I came to appreciate them because of her. Said this, this movie feels "male" not for the action per se - that's not necessarily male even if often is - but for the way the relationships are felt, lived, and resolved. The issue with the way you spend time and the way your partner, usually a woman, reacts to it is way too real even if you have an honest job.
I saw this film when I was 13 at the movies ... a lot of the drama flew over me but damn that heist made it worth it for my young mind altho I did knew back then that there was something in this film I need to rewatch it now to really get it all I owe it to myself and great review fellas.
As a great review, as the movie deserves it. And now that you are talking about the skyline.. did you ever review "Blue Thunder"? It probably won't be much of your liking, but I loved it as a kid.
Under their jackets, barrels sticking out the bottom. You can clearly see Sizemore's rifle barrel when he leaves the bank. You can't see it in the clip in this video but you see it in the film.
You guys somehow make this movie seem 100 times more "fun" lol the shootout blew my 13yo mind randomly flipping the tube to HBO and seeing my boi val Kilmer rocking the 90s only like the lizard king could do! 🤘 cheers guys and thanks for doing these reviews! They are so fun to watch and get sucked into my chair hahah
Oh i love that guy! Haha you should make that a running joke, shouldn't be too hard he's in everything! Yeah i always saw this as that good action crime movie that's really long, but i felt like there are better ones out there and if i wanted to see a long action crime movie i usually went for The Godfather, Scarface or The Untouchables which in my opinion are better then Heat. I also just have a really hard time buying Pacino as a cop, i know he's not the best cop on the force here but still. Great review!
Don't forget that Michael Mann cut his teeth on tv, making such classics like Miami Vice (you know, the version that didn't suck) and my fave CRIME STORY -- that show puts most police crime shows to shame nowadays with how they handled the Chicago and later Las Vegas backdrops. As for Heat, not much to say. It's a bucket list movie. =)
