I feel like Heat always gets its deserved praise but Collateral is such an underrated film. It’s my favorite performance from Jamie Foxx and probably Cruise as well. It’s has such a unique and isolated feel to it

When it comes to shootouts and LA at night, Michael Mann is the best!

"Michael Mann's action is fast and unyielding" Like real life, it's always about how it's built up. It's the tension, but not in any horror sense. It's just tense, then the release is energetically chaotic. The nightclub scene in Collateral is one of my favorite action scenes because of its setup. How can he find his target in this environment, amidst this chaos?... the same way he always does. With calculated precision. Heat is the same. "Hey yo, homie" is also a favorite of mine for similar reasons.

Saw them both today and man i couldnt tell you which of them came out first, couldnt even tell if they came out today or 30years ago, two timeless pieceses dircted to perfection!

Glad to see Collateral, such an incredibly underrated film, getting some real love (even if it is alongside the overshadowing but understandably so Heat).

Love these movies, thank you for this video. Michael Mann had a huge influence on me with writing and I like to watch both of these movies at least once a year. L.A. in both of these movies is so alive and atmospheric, the city has a life to it, similar to Miami Vice, which Mann was one of the creators for. I always felt Heat could've been a TV show because of how thoroughly fleshed out and developed every character is. If you take away the 3 names on the poster (Pacino, DeNiro and Kilmer), you still have a cast of characters that are well written and can imagine them doing things. Hanna's police squad is so fleshed out, you can easily imagine his detectives doing work in episodes and the same goes for other characters in the movie (Jon Voight's character probably has an interesting past setting up jobs and looks like he could give good stories). In Collateral, despite being so different, Vincent still looks out for Max in a caring way. When he takes down the muggers in the alley for his briefcase, he collects Max's wallet and gives it back. Later in the movie, Vincent kills someone in the club when they mistake Max for the shooter. One thing I never see talked about with that movie is that when they are in the car, they are safe. Despite them feeling crime scenes, having a dead body in the trunk and the destination being another murder scene, there is a sense of safety during all the scenes they're in the car together.

I love Heat. Especially the shootout scene and De Niro meeting Pacino in the diner. Never seen collateral though

These are such great films to sit down with a bowl of popcorn and watch.

These two movies are one of the best ever taken

Michael Mann needs to make One more epic Los Angeles crime saga with in the same universe w the gray suits and all. Completing an untouchable trilogy. Thief can be considered but it needs to be an LA night movie. Mann knows how to film in LA better than anyone. Maybe a crossover story of frank from Thief out in LA years later or something maybe have James caan runing a crew as an old guy.

Who else would want to see a Heat/Collateral crossover movie? Al Pacino going after Vincent. That would be AWESOME!

Yet another outstanding analysis framed with cogent insight and subtlety regarding the true art of film. These are two of my favorite films and deliver unforgettable scenes, as well as constructing a dreamscape that pulls you in like a seduction. I would choose VIncent and Max over Pacino and De niro

Heat starts in a train station and ends in an airport. Collateral starts in an airport and ends in a train station.

I think I'm Collateral Team but not so sure. Heat slow pacing is masterful generating suspense but Collateral is less focused in real life like relationships and more focused in work relationships like Max supplanting Vincent to visit a capo in a tex-mex club. Collateral is more thriller but I admit Heat is a subtler thriller.
