In this enlightening episode, Elior ( of ‪@DoctrineofChrist248‬ ) and I delve into the fascinating world of heavenly ascents and theophanies as depicted in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, exploring how these divine encounters align with ancient temple rites and their echoes in modern Latter-day Saint (LDS) temple practices. Join us as we uncover the profound symbolism and sacred traditions that bridge these ancient and contemporary spiritual experiences.
We'll begin by examining key biblical and Book of Mormon narratives where prophets and patriarchs ascend to the heavens or encounter the divine presence, such as Moses on Mount Sinai and Nephi’s vision of the Tree of Life. These theophanies serve as archetypal journeys to the divine, laden with rich spiritual meaning and significance.
Our journey continues as we draw parallels between these ancient theophanies and the sacred rites of ancient temples, shedding light on how these practices were designed to facilitate spiritual ascension and divine communion. We'll discuss how these rites are mirrored in the modern LDS Church's temple ordinances, focusing on the three levels of washings and anointings:
Baptism and the Gift of the Holy Ghost: As the initial step of spiritual purification and rebirth, baptism symbolizes the death and resurrection of Christ and the remission of sins, while the gift of the Holy Ghost represents the anointing of divine presence and guidance.
Initiatory Washing and Anointing: Performed in the temple, this ordinance includes ritual washing and anointing with oil, symbolizing spiritual cleansing and empowerment, preparing individuals for further sacred covenants and ordinances.
Washing of the Feet and Anointing: This profound and rarely discussed ordinance, exemplified by Jesus Christ’s actions in the New Testament, signifies ultimate humility and service, as well as a deeper level of spiritual purification and preparation for divine service.
By exploring these rites, we’ll illuminate how the LDS Church preserves and perpetuates ancient traditions of spiritual ascent and divine encounter, providing members with a structured path to experience their own theophanies. Whether you’re a lifelong member or simply curious about the connections between ancient and modern spiritual practices, this episode promises to offer deep insights and a greater appreciation for the sacred rituals that shape the Latter-day Saint faith journey.
Tune in to discover how the echoes of ancient temple rites resonate in the modern world, guiding the faithful toward heavenly ascent and divine communion.

I love that our generation is jumping deep into studying out the meat of the gospel. I feel like because we are starting to understand these deeper meanings and see the Book of Mormon for what it is, a temple text and how to ascend, we will be given the sealed portion soon! If you haven’t checked out the ancient tradition podcast I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who loves studying these things.

Thanks for sharing. This connected a lot of dots. I'll be coming back to this video. Elder Maxwell's words come to mind: "the doctrines that came through that “choice seer” (2 Nephi 3:6-7) by translation or revelation, are often so light-intensive that, like radioactive materials, they must be handled with great care!" (Joseph Smith: “A Choice Seer”, BYU Speeches, March 30, 1986)

It's my understanding that men are promised "to become clean" while women are pronounced clean after the initiatory washings and later the washing of the feet ordinance is only performed for men, because they must be washed clean from the blood and sins of their generation which fall upon their heads due to their holding the priesthood. Do you see it this way or I am missing something?

Spoiler alert for part two!!! On a serious note, though, I see it very much the same way.

You brothers are very interesting. Regarding women being clean, there does seem to be a cleansing that comes through suffering what the Lord has inflicted or allowed to come upon us. Think "the fellowship of the suffering of Christ." Christ shows us His wounds as a means of identifying Himself. I am not talking self-flagellation or anything like that.

Roman's 8:16-17 "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together."

Why doesn’t the church do the second anointing for any but the highest leaders anymore? It seems like it’s needed now as much, if not more, today as it was for the members in the early days of the church when it was done for many more of the every day members.

Great question! Speaking for myself only, I'd argue that most of us have all that we need at the present. The washing of the feet and second anointing appear to be for those who have truly ascended through the covenant path - who have obtained a fulness of the divine presence - as a witness of their faithfulness. All of the other ordinances are pointing us toward a realization of that blessing. I feel it would be very challenging for Church authorities to identify all who were truly worthy of that final ordinance. And yes, I know that plenty have received this ordinance who weren't necessarily worthy of it, because they knew the right people. The amazing news is that we can receive what the washing of the feet and second anointing symbolize without receiving the ordinance itself, because God is no respector of persons. We can receive our Second Comforter and be sealed up unto eternal life by Him, by embodying what the other ordinances teach 😊

@@DoctrineofChrist248 excellent points! Thank you for sharing them. I do know that those who receive the 2nd anointing are told they MAY later receive the 2nd comforter experience with the Savior, but if not, the anointing is still valid. I just know a lot of incredibly worthy people who could use that ordinance these days of severe trial. Like how the temple ordinances we do now strengthen us, that anointing would be of tremendous worth and strength. Perhaps President Nelson really pushing temple attendance is because as they scan recommends when we enter, the Brethren have a log of those increasing their attendance faithfully, and perhaps those who reach a certain regularity based on proximity to their temple will be eligible for this blessing in their lives?? But, I totally agree that each of us can strive to be worthy of a second comforter experience. However, I’m sad that many very righteous people who haven’t had it think they are never going to measure up enough for it, and it truly grieves them. They think only those who have long been in leadership get the 2nd anointing, and they’ve never been, or only occasionally been in such callings, and then only at the ward level. They find it difficult to believe they’d receive the second comforter or 2nd anointing if they’re “just a normal old member.” These are just some added thoughts based on living a long life and meeting many people throughout the US as we moved many times for my husband’s career. Thanks again for your input.

I was thinking about the sun moon and stars recently while reading Ezekiel 32:7-8. It's interesting to think about the symbolic meaning of them being darkened or falling from the sky.

There's so much interesting stuff from the Ancient Near-East about stars and how they interacted with humanity and the divine council.
