ALCo may be defunct, but they have truly given us a gem in the form of these superb 251 class locomotives. Of course, they have been iterated upon, modified and rebuilt, but the foundation was solid enough to allow us to use them for decades. This is probably the last few years for ALCo locos on Indian railways, what with EMDs and electric locos dominating, but they will always be special.
This is awesome!!! I love that smoke and the way it smells! You don't see that happening much these days like I remember back in the '80's and '90's. But once in a while I do see intense smoking diesel locomotive. Instead of Alco's, it's mainly GE's now, smoking. I do miss those Alco's. Part of the reason why you don't see them much.
These are 4 stroke diesels. They take a while for the turbo charger to get boosting properly meanwhile the injector pump is pushing fuel according to the throttle setting. This is why they belch out black smoke when building revs.
@@robertusa1234 No. It is strictly an over rich fuel mixture. Old technology. The turbo's on those units rely on exhaust flow for their energy. Modern turbo's are a hybrid being run from the crank shaft at low RPM, then disengaging at higher RPM.
@Supper's Ready it only smokes when revving up, then the turbo kicks in. Besides, in India, we get the vast majority of its power from coal, which is even less efficient than diesel-electric systems.
Atleast look at the brighter side. A single loco is used for hundreds of passenger. So not a bad deal. And most of you guys own more than one vehicles ,so please stop complaining about smokes and pollution

How in the name of all that is holy are these smoking monsters allowed to pollute like that ? Lousy engines, poor combustion ? Substandard refined fuel ? This kind of smoke generation was outlawed decades ago in other countries ?
