In this Hidden Forces exclusive, Demetri Kofinas interviews Leemon Baird about the launch of Hedera, a public ledger built on the hashgraph consensus protocol. Hedera promises to be the public ledger of the future. It's fast, able to process hundreds of thousands of transactions per second in a single shard. It is secure with asynchronous Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus. It provides fairness in transaction ordering, with consensus timestamping for every event shared across the network.
Hedera is open review, meaning that anyone will be able to read the source code, recompile it, and verify that it is correct. The Hedera whitepaper makes it explicitly clear that no license will be required to use the platform. No license will be required to write software that uses the services of the platform or to build smart contracts on top of the platform. Applications built upon Hedera can be open source or proprietary; they do not require any license or any approval from the governing council.
Hedera governance is in two parts: Council Governance, used for the management of the business of the council, and Consensus used in the Hedera platform for determining the consensus order of the transactions. The Hedera codebase will be governed by the council and will be released for public review with Version 1.0. Hedera's founders have stated that it will use its patents defensively in order to ensure the type of stable governance that the Swirlds team believes markets demand for mainstream adoption.
Hedera uses technical controls in order enable two capabilities. The first ensures that software clients validate the pedigree of the Hedera hashgraph prior to use through a shared state mechanism. The second makes it possible for the Hedera governing body to not only specify the software changes to be made to network nodes, but also to ensure precisely when those changes are adopted, and to guarantee that they are.
The Hedera technical framework also includes an Opt-In Escrow Identity mechanism that gives to users a choice to bind verified identities to otherwise anonymous cryptocurrency accounts, and thereby provide to governments with the oversight necessary to ensure regulatory compliance. This optionality gives Hedera the unique advantage of being able to stay ahead of regulatory changes by governments around the world.
Hedera expects to maintain, and in certain instances enhance the types of performance results already obtained by Hashgraph in permissioned test cases. Integral to the scaling of Hedera is the ledger's approach to proof-of-stake (POS) and database sharding. Hedera uses a proof-of-stake model that requires no bonding, no slashing (i.e. no punitive actions associated with bad behavior), proxy staking (the ability to earn interest on coins you have staked with another node), and vote weighting by stake. Nodes receive payments proportional to the stake they make and share these rewards with those that proxied stake to them.
Hedera will launch with a services layer that includes a cryptocurrency capable of microtransactions, a file storage system, and smart contract capability of executing applications written in solidity.
Disclaimer: Demetri Kofinas is an early stage investor in Hedera. His previous interviews of Leemon Baird (first & second) and coverage of hashgraph were conducted prior to having become an investor in the public ledger. Nothing in this interview should be seen as an endorsement of Hedera, nor is it investment advice. This is not an ICO.

Hedera looks like a promising project but this interview provides more than just promoting a project. The true value of this interview is it provides thought experiments/examples which are useful for understanding distributed ledger technology. Great interview!

He talks about Nano payments on Hashgraph. There's already a Nano cryptocurrency that uses a DAG but completely free of transaction fees, plus all the coins are distributed and there's zero inflation.
@Supremax67
@Supremax67 4 года назад
No such thing as free, everything has a cost. The worse fees are the hidden ones.
@KeyTeachings
@KeyTeachings 4 года назад
If there's no fee, that platform will be subject to spamming attacks that can bottleneck the platform. Also, all DAG's are not created equally there are many different kinds.

@@KeyTeachings there's a little bit of pow introduced for that effect so that if you spam you'll eventually have to do a lot of pow, I like hashgraph, but nano is also very well built. Nano beats BTC as a pure currency/sov on every aspect. Hedera is making a strong case to wipe ethereum, eos, cardano, kadena off as obsolete. XRP is then left, but xrp is a great product also and the supposed partnerships are very key. Hence NANO, XRP, HBAR are in my opinion top coins with with great potential ROIs. Chainlink on a league of its own however Tellor will likely give much to talk in the future as a direct competitor to link. We're missing a good privacy coin, Monero has been great but the pow is unsustainable, there's space for a sustainable alternative with the present options having yet a lot to show for.

@@goncalocardoso8826 I'm very comfortable in saying that on a technical level, Hashgraph has the most elegant and powerful solution of any DLT currently in existence. Hybrid systems always make sacrifices with respect to security, always - not something you want to cut corners on if you are trying to build the trust layer of the internet. XRP in my mind is the least technically sound solution of the group and the platform as a whole has shown an interest only in flooding the market with tokens.

If the insiders are the only ones allowed to run Hedera nodes and charge fees on it, how is it the public network?
@frederikroark

In the yet-to-be-released public ledger, anyone can run a node and charge fees for that.

they are not the only ones. read the white paper. perfectly scaleable without even sharding, which all other crypto is desperately clinging to to save their respectable networks but flawed. public since it is censorship-free, open access to all at release, and has controls to migrate to a completely open and distributed network that can include every cell phone in the world at full scale. dont miss out based on your ignorance. chek it out. you;ll believe with an open mind

pathetic criticism. they've considered every variable. you clearly have no objective awareness of the scale of blockchain's current problems. hashgraph will be just above TLS and TCP/IP and support the new internet. their model is the best on the market. all others lack real world adoption which always requires some compromise between ideal and real. their solution does not compromise any ideal of the crypto universe.
@DmNetworks

@@deft7019 No! This is the biggest problem with this idea well pointed out by Rob. There are 39 companies that will "govern" so basically you give the internet to 39 companies to run it. They can easily become the bad guys. They can collude from day one and even if they change the code and everyone knows it, since it's already implemented and everyone uses it there is NOTHING you can do about it. This is a HUGE TROJAN HORSE in this otherwise good idea. This is the problem with Facebook. People see it changing people see how bad it is, but they helped implement new laws and regulations which make it impossible for new players to come and make a better social network. Even if you see Facebook changing you are still using it because everyone else does. This will be the same in this case too. Slowly we will become slaves of hedera and of the 39 companies that in time will be owned by a few people.
@teemuvesala9575

@@DmNetworks Each of the companies have term limits... If you think Bitcoin will save you and no government or companies have any influence over it, think again. Bitcoin is already compromised in many ways. 2% of BTC wallets hold 90% of BTC. Talk about centralization... Over 60% of BTC mining happens in China, again very centralized. Hashgraph model is the best out there. These big companies and banks will push Hashgraph into public use. Hashgraph is technologically capable of replacing VISA and MasterCard, something BTC or any other blockchain crypto are unable to do. There are other DAGs than Hashgraph, but none of the others are as fast. And most importantly, none of the other DAGs are aBFT. Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerance is the strongest security in DLT you can have, and only Hashgraph has on the current market while being the fastest and actually most used in the real economy already... Hashgraph has already reached over 1B transactions total, while BTC is sitting at 700M in its entire existence.
